You may be "distinguished." I'm still not certain that is the right word to describe a degree. Anyway, I'm proud of you. Wasn't trying to preach. You again disrespect the "distinguished" degree you have from a "distinguished" institution by saying I am "pretending to be a UK fan" merely because I disagree with you. Educated people should be able to debate without name calling. I'm certain Yale is glad you picked UK. I'm glad you support UK financially. Before you hurt your elbow patting yourself on the back, I'm sure most people on here do too.
I doubt we'll get any honest answers from any UofL fans in this thread. But I'll gladly give my opinion.
Pitino is a good basketball coach, without question. You don't win as many games as he has without being able to get the most out of players and get them to perform on the biggest stage. However, I would never send my sons to play for him.
Truth be told, Rick Pitino is a terrible role model and example for young men to follow. He's about as egotistical a person as you'll ever meet. He's also a very immoral person. The Sypher fiasco sealed the deal. The adultery, sex in a public restaurant that he didn't deny nor show remorse for, the cover up, the paid (forced) abortion, hiring an assistant to try to keep the woman happy and her mouth shut. It's disgusting. I also don't believe Rick didn't know about this hookers for recruits, either. It's right up his alley. His own sexual indiscretions are multiple and he doesn't care. Why shouldn't he use this to lure recruits? And his ego makes him think he should get away with it. No remorse, no repentance.
Now Calipari is also a great coach. Is he as good as Pitino with x's and o's? Maybe not. Maybe he is. It's splitting hairs. At that level, you're talking about a guy who can coach. And what is his track record for helping kids reach their dreams? It's unparalleled in the sport today!
Now, all that remains is for me to decide who I'd prefer my son to follow as an example. It's not even close! I'm sure he's no saint but he's a family man and he clearly does what he feels is best for his players, and he teaches them to be good citizens. So, my answer is Calipari, hands down.
Now I've talked to people who hate Calipari and say he's a cheater and he's slimy, and etc. But I find that these people, without exception, are repeating the talking points of other haters. They're regurgitating the same tired, unconfirmed things they've heard from others, and the true bottom line is that they just hate that he recruits top players, his teams win, and he doesn't apologize for any of it. They dislike his personality, which they see as arrogant and something like a jerk. But those who really know him never say anything close to that about him. So, I dismiss these ridiculous assumptions and opinions as being a sore loser or jealousy.

You are fine and all UK fans are welcome. Funny that we have one set of rules on this board for posters, but U of L has an entirely different set of rules for their board. I guess when you have mods over there like Steelers who used to troll over here along with people like Zipp who is known as not being kid friendly and pushes old women around what do you expect. Worst reputation in college athletics is probably the only thing they succeed at these days.

You are probably correct - since he enjoys indoor pools this is their prime season. I am sure he is "life guarding" at the Harbours, but someone needs to tell him that lifeguards help people out of the pool not push them back into the pool. He has served a far worse penalty than being incarcerated - he has to be a U of L fan 365 days a year
At one point, Pitino was the best thing to happen to Kentucky Basketball, the banner pays tribute to that period - we don't have to like the guy now.
The only thing thats changed about Pitino since his UK days is he cant hide his transgressions anymore. There were plenty when he was here too it was just a lot easier in the pre (or very early) days of internet in homes and reporters everywhere all the time with phones and cameras handy. He was the same smug, selfish condescending asshole at UK that he is at U of L. He hid affairs, he talked down to us as fans. Nothing has changed. Only time has passed and private lives are no longer private if you are in the public eye.
I disagree but even if you're right, it doesn't change my point about believability. Now he has stuff that is on record for eveyone to see. That wasn't the case 20 years ago.
OK. If we do not remove Pitino's jersey for any of the above reasons, can we at least change his jersey number from the UK logo to number 15? Since we are keeping the jersey for historical reasons, we should also preserve that tidbit of historical fact.
I don't know what you are referring to specifically, but the two scandals at UL have come to light because they blew up in his face. Not because someone had a cell phone handy. He had both coming in spades.
When people disgrace themselves and their family, you ABSOLUTELY can choose to remove yourself from them regardless of their past. Why is it so hard for some to understand?
He was doing the same stuff at UK when he was here in regards to his sexual problems. Known fact over at Memorial that he had two rooms at hotels for away games. Guy has been and is scum. Heard his son is actually a good kid, and unfortunate that he has put his family through repeated scandals.

It was 2 years ago he was telling everyone in the National media he could never operate like Calipari because he valued relationships too much to only have a kid for six months. He is so full of $hit .
Honestly if your kid is truly "elite" it doesn't matter where he goes. If he's really good he could obviously take advantage of the KY effect......as long as he's playing "good enough" to get time with the "elite" players. There's also a good chance he'll get a lot of pine time and get recruited over. Just the way it is at UK. As Cal always says, it's not for everyone. Just look at how many people are now bashing Skal. A young kid with impressive skills that just isn't ready physically.

Your question has many if's about it. If my son was a legitimate one and done prospect then it's no doubt John Calipari. If my son is a very good 5 star but needs work and time then I'd say Coach K. If my son needed alot of work but had a good work ethic then I'd say Tubby Smith. I can't think of a scenario where I would recommend he play for Rick ? Ok well there is one. If my son was a trouble child who needed to go somewhere where they will overlook his being a woman beating dope smoking thug then he'd be right at home. That scenario requires me to check my parenting skills because I've raised two kids "yes I'm bragging" both have degrees from UK and are solid citizens and one of them has my first grandchild on the way.

Oh and for the record, I've been a UK fan my entire and will always respect what pitino did to bring this program back to glory, after the darkest moment(that seemed more like a lifetime) in UK history. The failed experiment that was Eddie Sutton nearly destroyed not just the program, but the hearts and minds of all basketball loving Kentuckians whose greatest source of pride(excluding the minority of UofL fans) was in the teams who put on those blue and white jerseys and fought like wildcats on the court every year, declaring with every made shot who the true king of college basketball was and always will be.
Rick pitino's behavior was abhorrent and unbecoming of anyone with even a modicum of common courtesy and you will not read one defensive argument from me about it. But I'm also going to abstain from joining the remonstrating lynch mob calling for the tar and feathers and figurative noose all because he's turned into a sore loser in his advanced age.
He's apart of our history whether you like it or not, and deluding yourself into believing he was not instrumental in helping to rebuild our program into it's current iteration of the past 20+ years is nothing more than an exercise in stupidity.

I thought Cal did a great job coaching the team last year. Heck, coaches like Izzo keep their players for 4 years and can't bring it home, last years squad was Freshmen and Sophomore based.
