absolutely not. some of you fans need to grow up. Pitino came to UK and was extremely successful. Put UK back on map (as far as I am concerned). He did a hell of a job when he was here and took a program that was kicked to the curb and did great job rebuilding the program. He left and went to NBA and is now coach of UL. GET OVER IT!!!!. Those who continue to bad mouth this man give UK a bad name.
Seriously? And his actions yesterday continue to give him a good name? Go cheer for the Red if that's how you really feel. The guy is garbage, he works at a garbage school in a garbage city. In a way, its his own personal hell. he can look over the fence and see what he used to have. Burn the Banner

I have shaken his hand and thanked him for all he did for us before he left for Boston. In addition, I would also do the same today. I feel quite sure he would say leaving Kentucky was the biggest mistake of his life, just like he ALWAYS does when he's asked.
So, your position is you have so much gratitude for what he did from 1989 to 1997 that there is absolutely nothing he can do or say about UK that would cause you to question your opinion of him. I find that remarkable.

First, we are not some school that had fleeting success, lost it, then against all odds Pitino comes along to save us. 5 different coaches here have national titles, and we are ranked in the top 10 in wins and in winning percentage every decade since the 1940s, the only school that can make that claim. The point is, we would eventually have come back from the late 80s mess, the fan base would have demanded it. At most, Pitino simply accelerated that comeback. BTW, the more time passes and the more dominant we are, and the longer his record at uofl pales in comparison to what he did at uk, the more it seems uk made Rick, rather than the other way, which was debated for a long while.

Second, if all Pitino had done "to UK" was take a job at its rival, I could see your position. Would disagree, but could see it. But that's not all he's done. He flipped us off yesterday - is there a better way to show lack of respect? He doesn't like us - he hates the fans, and "detests" our coach (per Pitino buddy Forde yesterday, and he would know). He said just yesterday he hates losing, but he especially hates losing to UK. Why do you think that is - love for us? What do you think he tells recruits about Cal and the UK fan base? Why do you think Cal dislikes him so?

Bottom line, he despises you. You're romanticizing a period to an extent that you excuse him crapping on you. Really doesn't add up.

You like to ignore the heads up play in the regular season and postseason. Pimptino is Cal's total bitch. Explain that please?

I'm happy as hell Cal continues to own Rick, but that's not what we're debating. It's their time while at UK I'm discussing. Nice of you to even ignore Cal's "choke" jobs at UK.

To say the least, a worthy chat room debate for sure. Outside of that, it is a debate that will remain in a chat room. The University of Kentucky will not intertain such an idea. Historically, UK is steep in tradition and like it or not RP is part of that history. Pitino game to UK when UK needed him and he was very successful. Similar to coach Cal being here now. So by all means, enjoy your debate as it is all good.

Even if I do not approve some of the things he has done since he left UK, every time I think about hating him, what Jesus said when the crowd was about to throw stones at the woman. "Let the one who has not sinned cast the first stone",
Pitino, like most of us has sinned, but do I have the right to stone him?
I think not.
We don't have to love him, but hate is a dirty word.
No matter how you look at it, he is part of the UK athletics history.

“I don’t like losing, especially to these guys,” Pitino told Valvano. “It upsets me about as much as anything. I have to go out and see a high school tournament tonight, which I’m not looking forward to. I’ve got a day or two off, and I’m not going to enjoy myself after this loss. That being said, I’m proud of these guys, the way they fight. But we’ve got to understand we’ve got Wake Forest coming up. We hate losing to this basketball team.”

suck on that Card fans. Keep pretending ricky doesn't care about the UK game. You know how to read zipp ? These quotes mean anything to you ?

Lol, RP is so eaten up and obsessed with UK. It is such a beautiful thing to behold.

nc state boards can bring down the heels yet no one in here can get a picture of the middle finger from Rick ? Come on people, end the bs speculation and post the definitive picture.

No he didn't. He loved the Kentucky program, another reason why he always publicly admits it's was the biggest mistake of his life. Not his career, but his life
You are obviously under his spell. The man has no problem lying. You can hang on to him all you like. He is unworthy of ever being honored in Rupp again. I can guarantee you he doesn't care about UK fans. He mocked them regularly while he was here. He's an egotistical liar that has the morals of a stray dog.

I hope the recruit(s) he was going to see in that high school tournament read that and saw how much he wanted to be there to watch them.

Every time you type something on this site is the dumbest thing I've ever read on the Internet tard fan. I don't know who is worse- your moronic musings or Petjurino. You can't stand the fact- and it is a fact- that Pimptino can't hold Cal's jock when it comes to coaching. It isn't even close.

You're either completely clueless, which I choose to believe, since no UK fan can be as ignorant as you appear in the post I quoted. Not many will dispute who is the better coach now, or at least the better recruiter, that's easy. It's Cal.
But you're other post seems to take the UK Rick, completely trash him as well as his results here, and somehow come to the conclusion that there is no possible way anyone could've enjoyed that tenure in UK history more than this one....which is completely asinine. One of the dumbest takes I've ever heard actually. Congrats.
Now, feel free to continue with your name calling. It's very impressive.

You're right on several points and I've never denied that. UK made Pitino, not the other way around. However, I'm sure UK still has a good place in his heart REGARDLESS of how he current acts towards UK. Those memories were some of the first memories of UK basketball for me. They also happen to coincide with another golden era of Kentucky Basketball. Together, that's something that will never be taken away and should NEVER be taken away.

I'm sorry that some just don't understand that. This 'What have you done for me lately?' generation absolutely SUCKS!

And odds are, he never will be. That's also what should happen. However, he was honored once for what he did here and nothing can take those accomplishments away.

Rose hated losing but gambling let to his demise and those questioning his integrity. Nothing else. The biggest difference between the 3 was his legacy was built playing the game, not coaching it.

Pete Rose is still a habitual gambler,I see him throwing $100 bills around at Turfway Park on the horses all the time,he is betting friends with a long time acquaintance of mine, pretty sad really as it has cost both of them problems

One must understand the reasoning behind the banners, go educate yourselves before blabbering. The culture Obama and the liberals have made over the last 7 years has come to, "you hurt my feelings". Seems like everyone wants a flag taking down, a statue removed, can't say a prayer, my feelings are hurt bull sh&*t has got to end.
His banner is up there for one reason, and it has nothing to do with anything he is doing in his life now. Reading this "take his banner down" crap is an embarrassment to all the level headed UK fans.

What makes him more worthy than Tubby? Tubby won as many titles. Coached at UK longer. On top of all of that. I've never heard Tubby bash UK or its fans. I'm no Tubby fan, but he deserves it as much or more.

Also, nothing can take away what he has said and done since leaving. If it meant as much to him as you say, why do those things?

Taking the school out of the equation, if you had a son that could play college basketball for either Coach Pitino or Coach Calipari, which one would you "honestly" prefer him to play BB for? And why?

Pitino was a life saver for UK in 1989 and anybody who is piised at him today because he caoches at Louie ville is just an idiot. Leave it alone. Juwst keep beating him, thats how to handle that
yes, he did an amazing job when he was here; we're all in agreement on that. It sucked that he took the UofL job - most of us were upset over that, yes, but that is NOT why so much venom is directed at him. It was the constant snide remarks about Kentucky residents, his attitude towards UK fans, - then his scandals. He still acts like he's better than everyone else - and those of us who live here, we're mostly southerners, we don't take too kindly to that crap

OMG are you kidding me?!? I won't say anything about that

I wish his and Farmer's banners could come down, but I think you set some sort of precedent by taking Pitino's banner down. That means all of the sudden you have to make character judgements on banners going up instead of basing it on athletic accomplishments.
and there you have it - where do you draw the line? Nice post

Not a UofL fan.... but If I wanted my son to pursue a degree in Pimpology or learn to pay for abortions , I pick Pitino.
If I want my son to get a college degree or move on the the NBA, I pick Cal.

I've been a UK fan for 48 years. To even start a thread like this is ridicules, The man brought us from the ashes to a national championship. I'm not a Pitino fan, but you have to respect what he did for us! At the time he took the job it wasn't like coaches were lining up to take the job, because they weren't. If I remember right Lute Olson, PJ Carlisamo and some others did not want the job. Let's be fair give the man credit for what he did!

You'll get those in the 'What have you done for me lately?' generation tell you how crazy you are for saying that. Pitino should ALWAYS remain in our rafters. His spot there isn't for what he's done over the past 20 years, but for the 8 years that he was here. That should NEVER change

Neither. One is a good coach, but a butt head. The other is a nice guy and a great recruiter that can't coach.

GBB!

His choke jobs are no worse than Rick's. And his record is better than Rick's at UK. Rick never went to 4 out of 5 final fours. Rick was a great coach here, but he still isn't what Cal has been during his tenure at UK.
