In the book The Generals by Thomas E. Ricks he discusses at length the tension between a highly trained fighting force as opposed to a highly educated fighting force. He speaks about tactically savvy military with strategically obtuse leadership. We seemed caught in a rut of winning battles but ending wars badly. He used David Petraus as an example of how engage in an expanded spectrum to meet his goals with great success. This success was the result of an educated mind meeting then resolving issues through educated analysis rather than trained reactions.
