With the unit being founded specifically to combat violent crime and thereby confronting hard people on a regular basis, they are probably taught to use intimidation as a factor in dealing with violent people. We were many years ago in military police school. You can't be passive dealing with a threat. Again, not defending the cops, but it is like you say, a catch 22.

It's about discrimination. You can obviously discriminate against people for their actions. If someone calls you a piece of shit and says you should die, you can rightly refuse to serve them and tell them to leave your restaurant. You can't discriminate against someone for their identities they have no control over and are born into, like sex or race. Those are immutable characteristics and protected classes. You're one too being a man. The protections protect us all.
