Abrams contain several top secret proprietary systems that will have to be removed, they run on jet fuel, they require a complex logistics infrastructure, and training is completely different than anything the Ukrainians have used before. All of that is months if not years out. The only reason the Abrams mean anything is because Germany said they wouldn't approve Leopards until the US approved Abrams. And as the Leopards are German made they have to approve all transfers of them, even ones owned and in other countries that had already agreed to send them to Ukraine. So those 31 Abrams are meaningless in terms of actual use, it's just that they allowed the flood gates to be opened for Leopards to start flowing in from all over Europe. Expect Poland, Finland, Spain, Norway, and the Netherlands at least to send some.

You're both kinda right. They have accomplished two of their main objectives so far, a land route to Crimea and absorption of the Donbas. And they needed those brutal tactics you describe to secure them. They have several more objectives though as well, like Kiev and western Ukraine if they can get it as shown in the opening days or more importantly Odesa and the Bessarabian Gap. If Putin can control the Gap he extends the defensible borders of his Russian Empire all the way out from the Sea of Azov and an isolated Crimea before the war to now Poland. That, combined with the actions he's already taken in western Georgia and Azerbaijan, completely plugs the holes in his entire southern flank. As Catherine the Great said, "I have no way to defend my borders but to expand them."
