He thought Biden would roll over, NATO would choose cheap gas and it would be a giant Crimea land grab. Biden is a senile old man that screwed up the Afghan withdrawal but he's just smart enough to know that appeasement never works with tyrants. Two different things can both be true at once.

The Russian people are getting sick of this, the people around Putin are getting sick of this, Russia is struggling with supplies, money, troops and are totally devoid of morale. It isn't likely to require anything more than supplies for Ukraine to eventually destroy every Russian soldier in Ukraine. Just wait and watch.

They basically won't get used at all. Abrams contain several top secret proprietary systems that will have to be removed, they run on jet fuel, they require a complex logistics infrastructure, and training is completely different than anything the Ukrainians have used before. All of that is months if not years out. The only reason the Abrams mean anything is because Germany said they wouldn't approve Leopards until the US approved Abrams. And as the Leopards are German made they have to approve all transfers of them, even ones owned and in other countries that had already agreed to send them to Ukraine. So those 31 Abrams are meaningless in terms of actual use, it's just that they allowed the flood gates to be opened for Leopards to start flowing in from all over Europe. Expect Poland, Finland, Spain, Norway, and the Netherlands at least to send some.

One way we limit damage is to have a number of our units as subsidized Section 8 renters. They don't take care of our property, we inform Boone County & out they go. They're pretty conscientious about hanging on to that $500-1000/mo. OTOH, the county doesn't pay quite top dollar, so it's a trade-off to achieve steady income & maintained units.
