Most jobs have something like 15 PTO days, excluding holidays. 10 are usually vacation and 5 personal days. Most jobs will accrue those days and you can start taking them after 6 months. At my job after 5 years I got an extra 5 days of PTO but they did some sort of employee retention incentive last year that gives me an another 5 in 2023. I’ll basically have 4 weeks vacation to use next year.
In reality, that’s not much. 10% raise over two years isn’t even keeping up with inflation. If someone is getting a CDL to drive TARC’s busses, then TARC damn well better pay for it. My work pays for me to keep and maintain licenses in all the states we do business in. They pay for my licenses, my professional organization dues and my continuing education requirements. And they allow me to get those CEU’s on company time. Typically I do webinars while I work for most of them.
My dad was a railroad worker for 30+ years as a switchman. Dude had like 6 weeks or more of PTO by the time he retired.

I work tech for a Non for Profit and I only get like 4 weeks of PTO with ZERO sick time.
I'd be curious what sort of PTO one of these rail workers get when they start their employment.
However.. the issue seems to be that rail workers must put in for PTO days or even weeks in advanced.. which kind of negates the ability to take a "sick day".
