The entire operation is corrupt as hell. Most people don't realize just how bad things have gotten for farmers in the last twenty or so years. Everything is now genetically modified and controlled by a handful of seed companies, and you have to purchase from them or get sued into oblivion.

These gas prices are unsustainable. A recession is an inevitability if it continues. No politician can fix this issue right now.
Gas would be cheaper under Trump right now but only because he would have given Putin free reign in Ukraine, blown off the NATO alliance and Russian oil would still be flooding the market. Short term gain but long term pain. It would have resulted in a more powerful Russia and an emboldened China w/Taiwan and Pacific.
Putin is just riding out this war waiting to see what happens in the next US election. If his puppet Trump gets back in.....look out.
Not saying I want Biden....I don't. But I sure hope it is a Republican who is not a nationalistic isolationist.

Actually, soybeans in particular have genetically modified by Monsanto (now Bayer) to have the glyophosphate imbedded in the seed so that there is no need to make an extra trip through the field to spray it on the soybean plants.

Look at the soybean fields right now….. The soybeans are up about 6-8” high and you’ll see dead (brown) grasses and weeds in the field. This is genetic seed at work.

This innovation has enabled farmers to plant their rows of soybeans about 12” apart to boost yields. When I was a kid my dad and my uncle planted soybeans in 32-36” apart - and then we’d have to “walk the beans” and pull or cut the weeds by hand, or come in with a tractor and sprayer (and risk damaging the crop driving through the fields).

There is certainly a downside to this however. In addition to the genetic issues you mentioned, Monsanto’s business practices with these seeds are pretty ruthless. I don’t know if it has changed but before my dad retired about 15 years ago, farmers had to effectively sign a license agreement to purchase their seeds. Among the conditions of buying / planting their seeds was the stipulation that you couldn’t save some of the produced soybeans for next year’s crop. I don’t know how Monsanto was able to track this, but they did and they took farmers to court for contract infringement for doing this. One guy counter-sued and it went all the way to the Supreme Court which (surprise, surprise) ruled in Monsanto’s favor.

I know my dad resented the way Monsanto marketed their seeds, and so did most other farmers.
