They fired Tubby for the current crap at Minnesota..6-11 0-5 in the Big 10 ,last 2 losses by 25 points to Northwestern and gulp...Nebraska..The ousted AD at Minny (fired over sexual harassment of secretaries)
paid Tubby $3,000,000 to leave and after all turned him down..stuck with the son of ESCORTino..
Maybe Tubby wasn't so bad after all...

4.NCAA Tournament appearances Tubby went 5 times
of course they are grooming Pitino Junior to take over at Loserville maybe sooner than later Like one ex UK AD said after Tubby was let go at Minny."who do they think they are..it's a hockey school"

The natives are getting restless up there. There were over 200 comments in the Star after that Nebraska loss, here is one:

this has just plain turned into pitiful ,and the u should be so very happy they hired a name ,cause that's all they hired,and they thought ,oh yeah we got the man,hahahahahahahah,this guy is a JOKE and will never do anything here but take all the to much money they pay him ,,/u.of m you are a joke also .for even think he could coach ,admit it ,you wanted the name,,he could NOT coach ANY team

Frankly I thought Tubby's abrupt departure had more to do with Saul's off court issues than Tubby himself.

Tubby beating Minnesota with his TT team had to be the icing on the cake. That said, Jr. would still be a good replacement for dad at UL.[winking]

NO..Tubby said in a conversation and yes I am a friend of his..The new AD wanted his own Coach..Shaka Smart where he came from VA Commonwealth..Saul's DUI caused issues at Minny..Tubby told them to fire Saul if necessary.Texas Tech would not let Tubby hire Saul as a Coach for that reason..That's why Saul is Video Director

Tubby went just 3 times. You are counting NIT's as NCAA appearances. He still did a lot better than the current coach and most Minny coaches over time.

I just couldn't believe they fired Tubby after his recent contract extension and first NCAA tourney win since arriving there.
 
Saul continuing to be a pain in Tubby's side. We had him here for 4 years that limited our options at PG and sacrificed wins for a guy that can't seem to get his act together.

I think he needs to go ahead and move out and start his own life.

Too bad for Richard...he was on his way to becoming a rising star...didn't play his cards quite right...Big 10 is a tough conference...should have maybe stayed in the sunbelt and won a few conference titles before moving up a weight class...or at least taken a smaller step forward to a mid major...

Tubby wasn't going to set the world on fire at Minny...but he would have been able to establish something consistent and stable... 22-25 wins per season and dancing...

Seems to me new AD wanted to swing his d*** around... roll some heads, and bring in his old friend...but Shaka was never going to Minnesota...he was going to get a big time gig and he knew it...every body knew it...

as for the Saul incident...if that was the AD's biggest gripe...he should have just fired him...Tubby doesn't stand for that...

Tubby should be fine a Tech...might take a few more years to really establish some stability...but overall the situation is a better one...

the state has so much talent, Tubby will be able to find some solid players in the lower ranks...a lot better weather situation and more attractive to out of state prospects...

I think UL would be lucky to have Richard Pitino as their next BB coach. They need to keep it in the family...

I hope this isn't Tubby's last year. Would love to see him make one more Tourney run before he hangs it up.
 
I rememeber when Richard was a kid and a HUGE UK fan. UK shit all over his room, and does anyone rememeber "the play book?"

He kept his own playbook for UK basketball under his rug in his room. I'll never forget that. I thought he would follow his dad one day.

Rick screwed over a lot of people when he ended at UL.

They aren't worried about him this year. Next year is when they are supposed to get some decent recruits. So either after next year or the year after will be make or break for him
 
Who the heck wants to go to Minnesota to play basketball? I was surprised they fired Tubby. What exactly is it that they expect there?

So with the OP's line of thinking, Kentucky football should settle for mediocrity for decades to come because Kentucky is a basketball school, right?

Winning record? Do you know what Tubby’s Big Ten conference record at Minnesota was once you eliminate all the non-conference cupcake wins? I will give you a hint: He never finished ONCE with a winning record in the Big Ten in his 6 seasons there. That’s a 46-62 conference record. Tubby was also fired in part because his last two recruiting classes were garbage. Sound familiar?

But one thing we do agree on…..Pitino Jr. was a TERRIBLE hire.

Different era I know but at one point Minnesota trotted out a starting lineup of Kevin McHale, Flip Saunders, Mychel Thompson, and Ray Williams who was a top ten pick

They Gophers also had some success in the 90s

Yeah, sure… I’m a Louisville troll because I brought facts to your little “Tubby and I are best friends / how could anyone fire him?” thread. For being such a Tubby superfan I bet you never even watched his Minnesota teams more than once or twice. If you had, you would know that Minnesota fans had many of the same complaints that Kentucky fans had about Tubby Smith. Maybe you should just stick to talking about the team you actually follow.
