I feel like the football team is getting screwed by the NIL and the University’s previous contracts. Seems like Mitch could be doing more about that imo.
I know people direct the anger at him for the Cal contract but if you think Mitch acted alone signing that contract you need to rethink that one. He holds responsibility, but so do a lot of other people. No way Mitch gave that contract without approval.
I’m guessing there is a portion of our fan base that would take Jurich. Louisville fans want him back. His cheating is like a pyramid scheme thought. Eventuality it collapsed. They wanted to lie, cheat, steal and Win forever. Even mob bosses usually end up in jail.
I would say Barney is the one to first float the idea. Ucla came calling and he hit panic button creating a potential program killing scenario. The buck has to stop with Barney.

Barney is fine. People just got their panties in a wad because Barney doesn’t suck up to PlayStation fandom or that he doesn’t fire Cal without cause, which would result mid 8 digit financial loses to the university. K, you're way, way better than this. There is truth on both sides. I no wish misery for Cal, but I do think a mutual parting of ways is what both parties should strive for. UK deserves better than what it's been getting for the money, the fans deserve to see the program back in elite status. At this point in time the program is not an elite one. Cal does not look to be healthy at this stage of his life. How many of us have been at the same type of job for that many decades, and DEALING WITH EGOS? It has to wear severely on coaches.
I basically agree with everything you wrote here. I do not however believe that replacing Calipari is the automatic answer. He knows more about the workings of college basketball than anyone alive. 200 universities are all trying to win one title. His one and done model has taken severe hits beyond his control with the portal. Incoming freshman are simply not as good as they were anymore because they are not taught to play defense in AAU ball. Defense is mainly where the younger guys have failed recently. He’s tried to adjust with the portal but proven players don’t want to be placed beside 5 star freshmen. They want to be the stars at their new destination. Self took some development 4 stars only because Duke and UK got all the 5s. It looks like that was a blessing in disguise as handlers and their NBA rush have hurt both programs. Let’s not act like Self was some type of genius tho. He was recruiting the best 5 stars and lost out thereby making his program better?? Lucky Ducky. I’m not sure if Cals approach can ever succeed at the highest level moving forward. I am sure it could get much worse with the wrong hire. See Indiana basketball and their string of dreadful hires. They were looking for the best guys out there only to end up with piles of steaming turds.

1. He has been here 20 years and not one program has been in trouble or put on probation in that time frame. I wonder if there is another Power 5 school that can claim that. Probably not.
2. Athletics is 100% self-sufficient
3. He pledged $60 million of athletic department money to help fund the science center on campus. I can guarantee you that has neve been done before on a college campus.
4. Athletes have a lot of success in the classroom
5. He falls in line at the university in terms of bond debt and funding for athletic projects. He's not one to ruffle feathers. He also does a good job of getting a lot of private funding for capital projects.
He has 2 major weaknesses imo:
1. He sucks at contracts. Always has, always will.
2. He sucks at PR, especially with the common fan. Always has, always will.
Those top 5 will trump those bottom 2 every day of the week in terms of how a president and BOT views an AD. He's going nowhere.

Calipari COULD have been what UK needed in terms of conference and tourney titles needed. That ship has sailed. I don't think anyone would question his experience as a coach, but I don't think that's the issue. IMO the issue, as shared by many here and you I imagine, is that he CONSISTENTLY has refused to do what's necessary to maintain this program's elite status, and when it began to fall he again REFUSED to do what was necessary to get UK back to elite status. He's concerned about one thing only: his NBA legacy as a recruiter and pipeline to draft picks. The only reason recruiting has picked back up is because he has assistants that can close the deal.
The truth is that being able to buy players through NIL has evened the field for UK vs Duke, Kansas, UNC etc that have been buying players with the knowledge of the incompetent NCAA for decades now. And since top talent can make MUCH more money with the ridiculous pro contracts now than you can hope to make with NIL they can live the life of Riley in college for their one year of college and still have a chance at being a billionaire with Cals draft record.

mitch allowed academics to extort $60,000,000 from our football program after he allowed our athletic department to have to BORROW the money for the NECESSARY football improvements that he had put off for his first DECADE in power. While the other SEC schools were investing in the MONEY COW. Have any of you brains figured out how many hundreds of millions of dollars he cost UK football from doing NOTHING for UKs facilities for his first DECADE in power, resulting in the TWO OOC nobody win seasons, AND the loss of 20,000 season ticket holders. AND their donations.
But since the OTHER SEC football programs that still supported football made hundreds of millions available because they were awake to what the real money cow was (responsible for the hundreds of millions from the SEC distribution) he became a football hero to a lot of our stupid fans and bought himself another decade or two as our AD.

That’s a definite political move. Send money out and borrow money. And people celebrate this transfer of money from football to academics. It’s absolute insanity.
I know it's not popular, but working in Higher Education, I will celebrate it. 1.5% of the annual budget is not going to break the bank. Builds good will when moving forward with projects in the future.
The football team is getting screwed to the tune of having the most 4 star players on roster of any team in history since ranking players were a thing. A top 10 class in 2022 and a top 25 class with 9 4 star players in 2023 the 2 NIL years while also killing it in the portal. Yup the team that just had its best back to back classes ever is getting screwed by NIL.
Nothing is more important than their BS narrative. No matter how many studs we sign or pull from the portal, “NIL is killing us”.

The football 2022 class wasn’t in the top 10 and the 2023 football class wasn’t in the top 25. They were close both years though.
You can say what you want but if you think we are matching the top teams in the SEC and you wanna deny JMI contracts are gendering UK because of the work CMS is doing go ahead. I have no desire to argue with the blind.
