"Now in our state, they want my mission to be, 'win national titles, win national titles.' My mission is bigger than that."

This is spot on. It’s like he is the only one that can get these kids to the draft. It’s clearly all about him. “To be the stone that creates the ripple.” 😂😂😂😂😂😂. What a self righteous SOB he is. 98% of the kids that got drafted here under him where going to the league anyways. He thinks he really is responsible (the only one) for getting kids drafted, which is complete bullshit. Maybe 1-2 kids he might have developed and thats being generous.

The “our” state 🙄 crap is about as bad. There is nothing about this state that he belongs to or belongs to him. He is like a politician who is out of touch with his base.

I know a lot of people say he does “charitable work” here. Really? He orders people to help a coalminer and his family-while he doesnt foot the bill to do so. Then self promotes it as if he is so moved by it. He did it for the attention as much as he did it for the right reasons. This coming from someone who has been on the receiving end of his “charity”. Dude is a phony.
He refers to the draft as a recruiting tool. The NBA riches are what every decent player desires. No kid wants to hear if you come here and work hard we can get you a good job as an accountant or sales person. He has his faults as we all do, but no one can say he doesn’t give back to the program, fans, school and state.

If Cal wants to be an ambassador for the stare, fine, run for governor.
If he feels the need to get top 10 high school kids drafted, fine, do it elsewhere.
All the schools that are winning titles don't have a problem getting and keeping good players, but Cal feels the need to get players drafted THAT WERE GOING TO GET DRAFTED NO MATTER WHERE THEY WENT TO SCHOOL.

This is kinda why we do not attend as many home games anymore and sometimes we may not even watch the basketball game.

Football, Volleyball, Softball and Track those UK teams are out to freaking win EVERY GAME, out to win a CHAMPIONSHIP.
And both university and players benefit from it as well as fans.

I just get Cal fatigue these days and I admit I used to take up for him. Not anymore.

Yeah, there was a time I took up for him too, but then I realized he's not out to win titles, he’s using UK to fulfill his need to feed the NBA. I don't know what satisfaction he gets out if getting these kids to the draft (kids that were getting drafted anyway), but that's what's happening.

The quote in the OP, says it all.

Last year we started the season with a goal," Calipari said. "You may think it was to win a national title or win all the games, [but] it was to get eight players drafted. Well, how can you be about your team if you're worried about getting players drafted? We kind of work it the other way. What are your dreams? What are you looking for? What are you trying to get out of life? How can we help you with that?

"For me, the mission for me is to be a vehicle to help others reach their dreams, to be the stone that creates the ripple in their lives that goes on and on and on. Now in our state, they want my mission to be, 'win national titles, win national titles.' My mission is bigger than that."

I personally don't need my coach to do anything other than win.

And I'm gonna say something even more controversial to some here: I don't need him to spend valuable time doing various charities and give backs.. no matter how noble. The school, with billions in endowment, can handle charity events..

I laughed at the thought of our team making shoes for homeless brits.. but I meant it. Play basketball first and then you can go do charity. You continue to make mistakes on the court? Then someone else can do your charity and you can get back in the gym.

Aka Carpetbagger...

I get the desire to want kids willing to work hard and do whatever it takes to help the team, even if that isn't necessarily beneficial to them becoming a professional. And I understand the wish of our players to play for the name on the front, and not the one on the back.
But I also recognize that (probably almost all) players have it as their primary goal to reach the NBA. So to address that desire makes some sense too.

So you support Cal's NBA farm system? Do you feel like it is what's best for UK basketball?

Do you believe this attitude and beliefe creates a situation where we have a mostly new team every year?

Does Villanova, uNC, UVA and KU live by this belief, or fo you think they put their programs first?

Do you think it's possible to win titles AND feed the NBA draft by using 3 and 4 star kids that stay in your system for 3+ years?

Thus In Calipari's mind, he had a VERY successful 2021-22 season. Sharpe and Washington were 1st round NBA draftees.
No other coach in the country would have allowed that Sharpe situation at their schools.

Cal's desperate need to feed the NBA draft, created that, heck, it creates a lot of things you don't want in your program.

Stroking his ego is his number one priority. He doesn’t do anything unless there is a camera around to see it.

You aren't winning with 8 draft choices.
4 of them won't play to their capability for fear of getting hurt.
3 will refuse to enter the game because they aren't starting.
The last one will not be able to lead an entire team when he has never been a leader before.

This team, with the experience it has, has shown nothing to be confident they can even win a SEC tournament. This rock fight mentality that Cal has is ridiculous.

We are supposed to have the skillsets above others. This hasn't shown the be the actual truth.
If your high school coach benches you for jumping in the air with nowhere to go, and Cal doesn't bench Wheeler?

We're all being played.

The greatest example of all of this is the kid who sat last year because he was not ready and months later he was on an NBA roster and scoring double digits.

I was a huge Cal supporter but it has become very tough to watch the slow decline of Kentucky basketball over the past six years . There is no question that we are now an underdog in our own conference and fear the Missouri's of the world who have a roster of players who will never sniff the NBA.

I am personally hoping that Cal announces that next year will be his last and that a coach in waiting will be hired once than announcement is made.

No, he flat out told us that winning titles would be the by-product of guys getting drafted. Remember? Drag us over the finish line?

Cal has NEVER lied to us about his intentions here. I’ve said it for years. We, as fans, have just chosen to make excuses for he and his outlandish quotes and never take him at face value. It’s been a defense-mechanism for many.

Below are some of the classics translated:

Cal: “I can’t hide you here”
Fans interpretation: “he’s not going to take it easy on anyone. If you don’t perform, you’ll sit the bench”
Truth: You will play no matter what. That’s my promise if you commit, I will continue to play you through all of your mistakes, no matter what or how many. So if you continue to play poorly you’ll get exposed.

Cal: “I don’t promise anyone playing time”
Fans interpretation: “you have to earn your time here. This is Kentucky and nothing is given, it’s earned”
Truth: The top recruits are 100% guaranteed playing time and given the longest of leashes. This again is his promise in order to get top recruits. Notice his penchant for continuing to play guys that clearly got outplayed by lower-ranked players behind them, even if to the detriment of the team.

Cal: “If they want to go pro, I’m not going to hold them back”
Fans interpretation: “he’s looking out for the kids. This is going to help recruiting because other kids will see that he’s not going to hold them back”
Truth: This aligns perfectly with Cal’s promise to “change lives” and get kids out of generational poverty. It also makes room for next batch of recruits.

There are MANY many more I just don’t feel like typing them out. Maybe @Gromcat remembers a few classic lines.
We don't move the needle we are the needle.

We are the gold standard

I really dislike this man. He's turned UK into G-league team.

It’s really worked out for him 39/40 of his coaching years. The guy has one title and is the most overrated coach in the history of Kentucky basketball. There are four other coaches who did the same thing for far less $ and with far less talent.

He’s an honest liar. He should have taken his own advice and left after ten years.
Thank you. Truth
