Matt Jones on KSR this morning said Cal isnt close to AD Media or Boosters anymore

It wouldn't shock me if he don't already have a deal in place to coach some where else next year.
I know people will laugh at that comment and I don't care. I didn't say he did. I said it wouldn't surprise me if he did.
That stuff goes on all the time in big time athletics.
I hope he does. 2-3 maybe the entire incoming class sans Sheppard will go with him. Again let them go. He would be thinking. I showed UK you don't question me. I burnt their village down and took all my recruits with me.
I don't give a damn if he takes all his 5 star NBA first players with him.
For the many here that keep up with recruiting. I never have. It's just not my thing. But those who do. How many of the 10 class were committed to Memphis and followed Cal to UK?
I want a coach who put winning at UK first. Not the NBA. I want a coach who plays the best players and puts them in the best position to succeed. One who will play a zone when needed.
I'd rather watch a less talented team play for the front of the jersey than the back of it

I know why some of you are leery of what Matt Jones may have said this morning but in this case I feel confident he knows what he is talking about, especially with boosters...Lots of moving pieces since the horn sounded at MSG Saturday night. Don't want to say anymore. There is hope for The Program.
I certainly hope you're correct.

I think the next coach will put UK first and foremost and may very well have connection to UK and the NBA and that 2023 recruiting class may not be total wash.

My hope is that, at the end of this season, he announces 2023-24 will be his last. As painful as this team is—there’s no hope for them cutting down the nets—I believe next year’s team has a shot if Wagner, Bradshaw, Dillingham and Edwards are at least on the same level as the Randle/Young/Harrisons group. I guess the exception is if Musselman has a wink-wink agreement and plans on bringing in his class. Which is pretty stout.

No chance next year. Even if they live up to the hype (Doubtful) but even if they do. A team of mostly freshman ain't winning 6 games in March.

Hell who cares about the recruits. Just get Oats and see if a couple of those four stars will join with Sheppard. Like Sam Walters’ game, you know he’ll torch us with fundamental basketball.

Yeah, that has grinded me down over the years. UK wins some games, and Cal goes off on anyone who questioned his approach. Then radio silence after another bad loss. He has even passed that attitude off to the players in recent seasons.

Yep. Sahvir is just Cal Lite with his comments. Totally delusional.

It’s not so much what Jones is saying but it’s what the fans that call in to his show are saying. It’s brutal
Matt used to never let those people through on calls. He'd always screen them to get the ones on that were more calm and agreed with his takes.

Now that UK coaching staff has shunned KSR, he's bitter and is going to let it rip. Real mature, that Jones guy (although if there's anything good about this drama, it's that the fans will finally be heard and not filtered).

This.

Heck, I would help all those recruits pack their bags.
It’s a guarantee most of them won't come close to living up to the hype and either way, they aren't going to come into college basketball and dominate. It just isn’t happening. Cal thinks they will, but so far, what he thinks us not what's best for UK.

I'd rather start over with a hungry young coach that wants to put UK back on the map.

Cal is washed up and he thinks he's too big of a deal to change.

I could live with that.

Announce it to start the summer and then convince Ian Jackson to reclassify. Start the Freshmen (Wagner, Dillingham, Jackson, Edwards, Bradshaw) and try to win a title with five of the top 10 Freshmen. Win it all and ride into the sunset on top or lose and go somewhere else and make NBA dreams come true.

I think that would make for an enjoyable season for all. Cal lovers could celebrate his last hurrah and Cal haters could cheer him on and look forward to the future without having to worry about him doing any more damage to the program. Win-win.

I thought it was well known that Cal didn’t talk to Barnhart.

Now, what I didn’t know, was that he didn’t talk to the donors.

I don't know how all that works and I was always told he was extremely close with Joe Craft, but maybe that's not true.

If he has distanced himself from our donors, well, that's a mistake, those are the guys that can tighten the screws on him.

But then again, that just means Cal gets a huge payday. He truly has UK by the nuts.

Even if every recruit follows Cal out the door, we'll be better off.

I assume the two most likely options are Musselman and Oats. They're going to bring recruits with them. They'll have guys at their current schools transfer to follow them.

More importantly, they know how to coach guys up. So even if our roster isn't full of 5-stars, we'll be better than we are now.

I think he's tired of the fan base. He keeps doing what he's doing because he wants to end generational poverty and all that.

But I think if they offered to buy him out, he'd jump on it.

I don't want another NBA-connected coach. Just give us a coach that wants to win at UK and understand the fanbase. The obsession with getting kids that only care about their draft stock/potential is tiring and why we are where we are today.

I don't think he'd take the buyout yet. I think he's too obsessed with playing God at the pinnacle school in the sport. He's a true narcissist.

Thank you, sir, for this little tidbit of "insider" information.

Ignore the posters who don't have a clue concerning your connections with the program.

I appreciate any insight you share with us " not insiders".

Your post actually brightened my day. Gives me hope for the future of OUR program.

To me, this is simple. Now, I could be wrong, but just what I think….

Cal has accomplished what he wanted to accomplish. Kentucky coach. Championship. Hall of Fame. Lifetime contract, set up for life. Children set for life.

He is done. Everything after becomes not as important. I don’t think he intentionally said “I’m done now.” I think it just creeps in. Less motivated. Relax more. Take more time off. Chill out. This leads to issues that compound. He realizes he’s in a hole, but not really motivated to climb out of it. So, he just goes with the flow. If he gets it turned around, good. He gives it the amount of effort he wants, but not as much as he would have prior. If he doesn’t get it turned around, no big deal, he’s set.

Even if there was a way to hold him accountable, he doesn’t care.
I think this is spot on.

He's not going to leave early because of the money and the NBA isn't interested in him at all.
There’s certainly no reason to leave till the opportunity to be an ‘advisor’ , and stop coaching for $950k annually opens up in 2024

Nothing wrong with nba connections. Musselman was a 2x nba head coach and roughly as successful as Cal at it. It’s good for recruiting. But musselman doesn’t drone on endlessly about nba crap that doesn’t matter much to his current program

Often some people know things that the majority don't though. I knew Billy g was dumped the last night of February, and that cal was replacing him. I had one inside contact. I was made fun of for a couple of weeks before it came out.
I thought @clevenger32 already came out and said he wasn’t who you guys think he is? Am I missing something here? I mean, I get the supposed connection, but did the man himself already shoot down the theory?

Well yeah, but Casey could be a stop gap.

Fair enough. Vogel may be gone before the end of the NBA season with Davis hurt and LeBron needing a fall guy, so the timing could work for him too. I’d be fine with Vogel moving forward.

Edit: brain fart. Vogel was fired a while back. Still would take him. He has a bubble title lol

Probably should have stated that more clearly.

Having the NBA connection is fine, just don't make it the open and obvious priority. Do that crap behind the scenes. What I don't know won't hurt/annoy me, and if it benefits the UK basketball wins column, then do whatever works. I just don't want it to be out there and bragged about above and beyond the success of the UK team.

I think Cal's biggest problem on the court is how he teaches not trying to score the final 5-8 mins of the game. Every single game where we are up big, our production goes WAY down in that part of the game. Once I noticed it, it became so apparent. The lead would shrink almost every time, because we stopped trying and the other team would start chipping away. Cal didn't care because the lead was big enough. But when you instill that mentality in your team, and they need to catch up late in the game, they can't.

First of all, we have no offensive scheme to make up points, especially when the other team ramps up the defense down the stretch. You get what we did vs UCLA. Each player trying to create for himself against pressure D, leading to forced, bad shots. I can't understand why O came back, unless it was just for the money. How do you as an assistant look at our offense and not make a stink. It's god-awful to watch.
