I need to get this off my chest

I was listening to KSR this morning and a caller said to Matt something along the lines of Cal continuing to preach and talk down to the fan base. Matt agreed and said he's tired of Cal doing this. Lemon then chimed in and said it probably has to do with Cal looking up to the seats and seeing all the empty seats.

Well here's my thoughts. As long as Cal is HC of basketball and Stoops is HC of football, this is going to be a football school. I know that's blasphemy to some, but let's think about this. Since 2015 football has being going up and basketball has been going down. Cal gets on these soap boxes and really does talk down to the fans like we're a bunch of idiots. Now with a fanbase this large, we're going to have some morons in the crowd, however we are the most dedicated, passionate fans in all of college athletics. No one compares. So yeah, we're going to have our opinions because we are just, if not more, invested in UK as he is.

Two: Football has given us something to enjoy that basketball has taken away from us. And that is watching players develop and becoming household names. We got to watch Benny break that record against PSU and when he did it was emotional for all of us because we watched him grow and earn that spot. Instead of having to learn a new player every 6 months we become eager to see players like Levis, Crod, McClain, Paschal, Jackson, Wright, come back and become better. I just don't feel that is a luxury we get in basketball anymore whether that's Cal's fault or not. Therefore we can be more invested in the product we are paying to watch.

Three: Football fans are not as entitled. Where basketball has always been great for the exception of a few bad coaches, we've always been a blue blood basketball program. Now with Stoops we are witnessing a basement dweller rise and compete. That is exciting! That is just so enjoyable to watch. Basketball expectations are weird. Cal just wants to put players in the NBA while the fanbase wants to beat Duke, Kansas, UNC, and make it far in the tournament (which has not happened since 2015).

I'm posting this here because I don't see this going over well in Rupps Rafters and find myself spending more time in this forum then the other. So yeah, what do you guys think? I'm curious where other fans are at mentally about this.

I'm posting this here because
most fans have the mental capacity to enjoy all UK sports
some lack that mental capacity

I support both sports…. And occasion women’s Bball and baseball.

but IMO football is more fun for the fans
Football is just different. Every game is on a Saturday. Tailgating adds to the experience. They play 3 cupcakes a year, 4 if you count Louisville. Vandy is a joke. So 4-5 of footballs games are definite wins. How is that any different from 7-8 easy basketball wins.

Cal isn't going anywhere and the vast majority of UK fans support him.
He needs these cupcakes for the freshmen and to work out player rotation kinks.
Attendance is down for all programs during a world wide pandemic. People will come out for the big games.
It's fun rooting for basketball AND football.

if you're referring to number one classes, previous coaches didn't need number one classes to compete. They were actually x and o coaches who knew how to manage the game.

They didn't compete though, that is my point. 3 titles in 50 years. One every 17 years and 8 final fours so one every 6.5 years.

Cal has a title once every 11 years and a final four once ever 3 years on average.

You are cherry picking for an agenda. Uk has either sucked for 60 years by your standards or they haven't at all.

Kentucky football needs a new indoor practice facility 🍺
Agreed.

I took a tour of Nutter in 1992/3, just after it was built, and yes, for the era it was state-of-the-art.

But the synthetic track surface that eats 20 percent of the end zones presents a literal health issue for WR’s running those end zone corner routes.

I’ll kick in 1K, as I did for Nutter, when the process unfolds!!

And I hope we win lots of basketball games, and that Stoops and his team get to show off another Citrus Bowl trophy in Rupp Arena in early January!!

Never said it was different with regards to easy wins…. Just the experience and the game itself. Varying weather. Team play is far more important; can’t have prima Donnas succeed without help. Tailgating. Explosive plays

I love basketball too, but the fan experience is better with football in so many ways…. The only thing that basketball approaches with tailgating is SEC tournaments

The seats are empty because the opponents blow. Attendance at Rupp will be fine here in a few weeks once the actual schedule begins. If Cal doesn't like the empty seats then do a better job scheduling and intertwining the quality opponents throughout instead of giving folks almost 2 months of doo doo teams.

You are right. Cal cares nothing about his players and UK. Got it.

I wish I could provide the video of Cal and Antonio Anderson in 2007 during closed practices. You guys would go into a seizure when you immediately realize that little world view was made up in your mind lol.

I’m both a huge Basketball and Football fan but agree Basketball and the 1 and done rotating NBA farm team has gotten old. KY playing no one for a month and a half is ridiculous. Go play home and homes with Big time programs since KY Basketball is the Gold Standard. CAL wants the stands packed play a good home schedule.
This is spot on.

Exactly. If you’re objective it’s easy to see. I r never missed UK games until Cal. Ever. My father is as die hard as it gets, never misses a game for 50 years. He hasn’t seen a game this season besides the first two.

The only way you can’t understand this is if your immediate reaction is to defend Calipari.

It’s okay to schedule some bad opponents, sht I want him to. But you’ve got to stop with the Owl State online games and at least schedule names people have heard.

this is literally all he has to do to improve this.

Form a new game.
Cincy - see if they want a new home and neutral (played in Ohio) game. They probably will.
Western Ky
Eastern Ky
Florida State - See if they have interests in a home and neutral (in Florida)
Get UNC back on the schedule home and home
Kansas - home and home
Cupcake
Cupcake
New yearly game between UK and UCLA home and home
Cupcake
SEC okay.

Just whatever. And yea he can do it, he knows he can improve this, the problem is (if we’re honest) he’d lose too much. He couldn’t win at a consistent clip playing those games. So instead of him changing his approach he wants to play scrubs because he knows the SEC slate with his young players on the road will result in lots of losses and his job gone.

These coaches are running scared and I wish the right people would have enough of it.

To this day I’ve never seen a coach, at any level, rip apart a guy the way Cal ripped up Antonio Anderson. Brutal, to the point where I really felt bad for AA. But he ended up being one of Cals best defenders he’s ever had, and that includes UK. I had the fortune of being 1 of a few people that made it in to some closed practices between 2005-2007 during his UM days.

I don’t care what you personally believe. Anderson has even discussed it. He almost just had to quit. And yea it was physical.

Cal isn’t what some of you think but believe what you want.

its been longer then 3 years

College basketball has been dead for about 15 years, no need to kick the corpse. Only boomers watch and the ratings and crowds reflect that. Football would have always been the top draw here if UK had put money into it to begin with. And that goes for anywhere. If a school is evenly moderately successful in football, it will get more attention than basketball.
Agree with most of your post. I am a boomer and I despise what college basketball has become. I never watch except when the cats play. I coached for 8 years and have been a ref for 47 years and I cannot stand all of the rule changes. I prefer college football by a long shot.

To the OP. Your thread has been sorta railroaded, and I’m guilty as the next. But you were spot on. I’m moving on from basketball. It’s not that hard.
I didn't make this post to bash on basketball. I try to support the program because it's what I grew up with and my first love. I wanted to talk about the polar opposite in trajectories of both programs and what we're witnessing now. It's easy to see people are sick of Cal and his antics and flocking to Stoops. It feels almost like we sold our soul to the devil. Stoops feels like the angel on the other shoulder lol

Exactly. We schedule light early because the team isn't ready. Well.....J thought this was Kentucky. Sure, each year every team has new faces, always been that way. But we're essentially ducking competition early on because we can guarantee we'll beat anyone with a pulse. It's bullshit. And I don't understand why supposed Kentucky fans defend that.

It's not just the older generation though. I'm in my 30s. I hate it too. Anyone who's been around long enough to see it change knows it's gotten worse. Which is why I assume the people who defend the nonsense are in their teen years or 20s and not old enough to have seen any different or know any better.

Same, I’m in my mid 30’s. I hate it. I know plenty of fans in their 20’s that hate it too. Everyone is always looking for generational bs,Environmental factors, or made up trends.

Maybe it’s something more local like always. The SCHEDULE and no loyalty to the program. No faces, no players to remember…..it’s just a revolving door of scrubs and minor league NBA kids. It’s doesn’t take a genius to figure out a prideful fan base that loves their guys in historical ways isn’t going to just stop because of a virus or a mask. It’s hilarious some think that.

I think there is a lot of truth to what you are saying. For example, there is evidently a UK basketball game tonight. But I have been too busy here keeping up with football news in the Lair to notice.

This is what I always go back to. I miss the Prince's, Haye's, Hawkin's, Shepard's, Maglore's, etc etc. I enjoyed being emotionally invested in watching those players go from zeros to heros and compete.

I know and understand why you made this post. And it’s pretty much spot on far as I’m concerned. I can’t help needling a couple or so posters once in a while. I have no life otherwise lol. Again, sorry for my part at derailing.

What about Duke? Cal didn’t duck that one. I still think logistics is why we can’t schedule better home OOC games

That's part of that special tourney, whatever it's called, just like the CBS one we play with UNC. Something 6 of 7 of these cupcakes are sub 300 on KenPom or Sagarin. That's just totally unacceptable.

Edit: what do you mean by logistics? Gonzaga has played UCLA, Duke and Villanova all in the last two weeks.

The point he is making is why waste the time on a basketball game that doesn't matter with players who are going to bounce in a couple months while we are finally invested in a coach on the other side we don't want to see leave. This Stoops drama with all these coaches leaving is the damn door shit all over again.

People have lives, families, jobs, etc to take care. Sometimes for a lot of us it's difficult to spread out all our time to the priorities and oh btw football and basketball. It's hard to invest in something that's just boring now and frankly almost taxing. With my busy schedule I have to pick football because it's more exciting with the drama going on. UK basketball is playing Central Michigan on SEC+... should I care? The athletic department needs to care. Hell the NCAA needs to care, because basketball has just dropped WAY off in general.

You sure know what he was thinking

Its not about that. Calipari is the leader of ruining college basketball home and homes. He was the first to want all neutral court games, and now others have followed suit.

Calipari was saying this is his vision of college basketball moving forward in 2006. Hears it come straight from his mouth at a luncheon and then again several times over. He created this, just like he changed K’s approach to recruiting. He’s a revolutionary.

Until Cal decides Kentucky and the fans come first, it’s going to get worse. And it doesn’t matter if Bass, or KL, or Cal first types of fans like it or not. That’s why this is happening, and it’s going to continue.

I mean let’s be real, Cal laid the groundwork for this by first convincing the fans that the regular season doesn’t matter. So now we have a month of scrimmage type games when the season starts.

He then dismantled the idea that the SEC tournament matters. So now no one cares about that.

Now it almost feels like since he can’t win in the tournament, next he’ll say the tournament doesn’t matter because THIS IS FOR THE KIDS TO GO PRO!!!!

He’s lowered our quality of basketball and now fans are beginning to care less and less as football improves.

The only way a UK fan can’t see this is if hes got’m by the balls with his salesman routine. I’m a UK fan.
realize that within the one and one system, he, just like us, have a new team every year. Throwing a new team to the wolves in November and December results in a bunch of losses, a low rating and a demoralized team. The basketball team looked great tonight, getting guys healthy, and are starting to play as a unit. By the time we play Notre Dame we should have our rotation down and some synergy and we should be able to win some games against ND, OSU, and UL. When you have a young team, these easy games make sense. Like him or not, he gets his teams ready for the tournament, which is how most everyone judges yours season. Hell, people on this thread say we suck because we are only in the top 8 every year. Which most all teams, including Duke, UNC and Kansas would love to have our record of being in the top 8 every year. The asses in the seats for basketball have nothing to do with football. If we had won against MSU and TN, and were sitting 11-1 now, I would say it did. But after the MSU game, and definitely after the TN game, that wind was taken from our sails. I went to a basketball game a couple weeks ago. Coming from Owensboro area, I invested 10 hours to go to a game. We won, I had a good time. But I honestly do not think it was worth it given the fact that I have a big tv and plenty of gin at my house.

I think this has merit, but I do think it’s overplayed. Football will always be the most popular sport, but when college basketball is operating correctly, it’s very popular. The problem is the current coaches are butchering the sport. It’s why Roy wanted out and didn’t even say bye.

They need to fix the rules, and have coaches like K and Cal make it exciting again. What’s happened here is in pursuit of maintaining their jobs for money, they’re sacrificing the enjoyment. If that’s how it’s going to be, set rules in placeX kick them out, and bring in guys who want to put a good product out there.
College basketball has never been popular on tv outside of Kentucky, Indiana, and the triangle in NC. Check the ratings. Other than the tournament, NBA kills college basketball in ratings. People in Kentucky don't seem to get that.

Yeah WanDale really grew before our very eyes from that young freshmen to now. Same with Levis now that I think about it. Watching them mature for years at UK sure has been a pleasure.

For someone complaining about Calipari being preachy this sure comes across as the same. Let’s face it football is doing a lot of what basketball is doing which is grabbing players from the transfer market.

It just is what it is, I hope people quit lying to themselves because one and done is the same thing as the transfer market as far as I’m concerned. As a matter of fact that’s a major reason why we were successful in football this year. It’s not the only reason but it sure was very important. I cheer on both football and basketball regardless because it’s fun to root for the Cats, and I think both coaches are doing a great job this season

Did you ever go to the UKIT? I did every year for a long time. We played shit in those games. We've always played cupcakes early. Sure, maybe a game in Freedom Hall in December against Digger Phelps or Kansas, before they actually became Kansas. This isn't new.
