I understand your point, but if 7 wins is an auto-extension, how can it also be an under-performing season? It seems that Stoops has been unduly insulated.

I think the answer to your question is that it's not seen as under-performing from UKAD's perspective, but it is increasingly so from a fan base that has risen it's expectations. Stoops is definitely insulated, and that's by design.

I think if this hadn't been his contract he would have pursued the FSU opening harder. When they kind of jerked him around in their only meeting he probably was like "to hell with this" in part because he's insulated.

The recruiting thing is my biggest worry. Gran pulled his weight in Florida getting guys up here to play. This guy has zero experience recruiting in the SEC. Our classes have been good for our standards but to take the next step we’re gonna need all the help we can get bringing players to Lexington and this guy isn’t gonna help in that aspect at all. If this is the guy he’s got pegged as OC then he better bring a lights out recruiter with him as QB coach. If not then our classes start to dip back down into the 40’s and then we’re right back to square one with Stoops struggling to win 4 games a year until he’s sent packing.

. So, is it fair to conclude that Stoops doesn’t fire coaches, the fans do ??
Your presentation and thesis are very good ones, btw.

People keep talking about also getting a QB coach but it seems to me that each of the top candidates will also be the QB coach. We can only have so many coaches.

.I appreciate your point. Maybe plans are for Marrow to take an increased role in the Deep South ??

Maybe Stoops spoke the truth when he said early names will be smokescreens. Hope this is true with Coen. I worry about how he would recruit too. Brohm would be a nice addition.

Really need to focus on getting the right guy to overhaul the offense. If he can’t recruit, he can give the other coaches something positive to base their recruiting on.

Eh....Gran wasn't a good recruiter IMO.
- Bryce Oliver, Akeem Hayes, Allen Daily, Nic Scalzo, Ognenovic , BJ Alexander, Gilmore at QB and Jordan Wright....Only Jordan Wright has yet proven to be a solid contributer IMO.

Also, I'd argue if Coen comes in as OC/QB coach you still have an open RB coach spot and that is a usual recruiter position you can compensate if you need a recruiting shot in the arm.

Athletics in Maine is trash at every level, and this is coming from a friend who grew up and played in college at a Maine state school and another who was a head coach for several years at a state school. If anyone accomplishes anything there against competition outside of the state then it’s a pretty monumental achievement.
Didn't Billy jack Haskins transfer there duri

My conclusion is that when changes need to be made it's going to be assistants pending a major NCAA scandal. That's true most places too, including Kentucky (see: Dawson, Mainard, Eliot, Buh, Thomas, Brumbaugh, Hinshaw, and Gran).

It's not official. That twitter account (wtf that is...) says Liam Coen is looking like the top candidate, and that's exactly what our UK media folks have been saying for a day now.

Think this is a pretty good hire and a great way to modernize the offense. If he brings parts of the LA Rams offense with him then I’m a fan. Love their use of pre snap motion and play action passing.

Certainly high risk/high reward, but I like taking a chance in this situation. And he’s had at least some play calling experience, so the people who are hell bent on getting a guy who has called plays before should be a bit more satisfied even if it was only for a couple years(although those two years he was OC at Maine their offense improved)

That's actually a really solid group. He wasn't the level of some of the others in staff, but not many are. We have some dynamite recruiters on this staff.

I think the receivers will surprise people if they can get a consistent voice as receiver coach. I can't believe how that position was neglected

Moorhead as OC and Coen as QB coach is a situation that would make sense, I think.
Sure , but that’s a pie in the sky . Evidently we couldn’t lure Moorhead away from Oregon and there’s NO WAY Coen would come here to be quarterback coach.

That is not a solid group at all. Only one of those guys has actually done anything at this point. Gran’s Florida recruiting is a big reason why we’re as bad at WR as we are right now.

Yesterday things were sounding positive about Joe Moorhead. Is he no longer a possibility?
It always seemed to me that Moorhead was a long shot. It wouldn’t surprise me if he was offered and turned it down or wanted too much money.

Thought ex-WR coach Michael Smith recruited Gilmore. BTW, Gilmore is now at North Texas....and he's not playing there either.

Stoops is still walking on water here somehow....Coen will either do well, or he won't....same as anyone else.

I was 18 not all that long ago, and if a dude came into my living room talking about being the assistant QB coach for the Rams, I'd laugh at him.

Don't get me wrong, I know that's a super sweet job. But to an 18 year old, name recognition is a big deal and frankly nobody under 20 has ever heard of this guy, and his job title sounds like a parody.

I think his offense will be what makes or breaks his recruiting success. If quarterbacks and receivers like what he’s running , they’ll come .

I'll admit this hire lacks a wow factor. At least for me. It reminds me too much of the Dawson hire. We'll see I guess.

Good hire. Modern offense. Exciting offense. A QB guy who hopefully isn't subtweeting kids and can actually coach up the QBs.

Excited to see how the rest of the staff rounds out.

How do you have a high powered passing offense in Maine when everybody's hands are frozen solid?

Seems like lack of success at Maine is not a non-starter. Who knows what he had to work with there.

Why would he leave the Rams is my question. Is this is a significant step up? Don’t seriously know, maybe someone can explain.

Nothing to do but hope for the best. Won’t take long to find out.

My guess is he wants to build a resume toward eventually getting a college HC job.
