Liam Coen

I honestly have mixed feelings about this hire. On one hand, he's the most inexperienced OC we've had under Stoops. He comes to us from a good offensive system, but he wasn't the play caller so we don't really know how good he may or may not be. We just don't have a track record to go on. But if he does turn out to be a good hire, maybe we can hang on to him for a while being UK gave him his first major coaching job at a P5 school. And inexperienced doesn't mean destined to fail. All of today's greats were inexperienced at one time until someone gave them the chance to shine.

Coen wasn't my 1st, 2nd or even 3rd choice for this job. I really, really wanted Joe Moorhead. I thought he had the most proven track record, the most name recognition and a really good offense. But that also made him a coach that would have been the most difficult to reel in. Maybe he wants to stay at Oregon or migrate to the OC position at one of the bigger job openings like Auburn, Texas or somewhere else. Even if we could have secured him, it would have likely been a lengthy waiting game. Going into signing day, we needed to make the future direction of the program known to recruits. So we couldn't afford to wait too long.

I hope this hire works out. While I'm admittedly very nervous about Coen's lack of experience, I hope he installs an offense that will be successful at UK...an offense that will generate points, be balanced, be fun to watch and be attractive for skill position recruits. At least I think it is safe to say we finally have someone who will get the tight ends involved in the passing game. This has seemingly been a gripe I've had with this staff for years. I want every position on our offense to be a potential weapon.
I couldn’t agree more. My hope is as your’s, my expectations are much less

Already looking forward to next season! I'd rather have an NFL guy than some no name, Joe Moorhead excluded. And anyone named Liam is alright by me, they bring "a certain set of skills" that make them a bada$$.

I think his offense will be what makes or breaks his recruiting success. If quarterbacks and receivers like what he’s running , they’ll come .
Bingo. A swift move to secure commits for signing day.

Based on what audio I heard in Dick Gabriel's show from Coen and Stoops both, I don't think we're going to see some huge philisophical departure. Coen did mention the run game several times and Stoops more or less said he wants to open things up but theres a basic philosophy about how he wants to go about it.

I remain cautiously optimistic . I echo everyone's concerns about recruiting ability. Seems like we will be a little more balanced. My total guess is we still focus on controling TOP. Be shocked to see Stoops just cut loose.

Style, Balance, etc....I couldnt care less...just get points on the board

Told ya!! Nothing is changing Stoop's mind... not even Saban

Any ch
I hope you understand this better than this. It means that Stoops has NO intention of changing his philisophy and doing anymore on offense than he allowed Gran. Just another coach under his thumb when it comes to the offensive side of the ball...just my opinion.
He said college football has officially become an offensive game. "It used to be that good defense beats good offense. Good defense doesn't beat good offense anymore," Saban told ESPN on Friday. ... It used to be if you had a good defense, other people weren't going to score.
Surely you didn’t use that quote again. Lol. Got to let it go my man.

lol! Yeah, Ill be shocked if we see some high flying affair. More creative and balanced but the same i herent philosophy is what I expect.

As long as we put up points and win then Ill be happy. The lack of production essentially handcuffing ourselves, thats been the issue.

If he just runs Play Action off of our powerful running attack, I'll be THRILLED!!

I was always AMAZED how little Gran used the fact that we could run the football to set up our passing attack. We have a future NFL TE that can get behind LB's and run over Safeties, why not use him!! Our young receiving corp will FINALLY be taught HOW to run routes sharply and WHERE the soft spots in a Zone are. Our QB's will be able to READ a defense PRE-SNAP and ACCURACY is the benchmark.

After listening to Coach Coen, I'm optimistic about the offense going forward. Hope he can turn it around and find a way to SCORE POINTS!!

Plus side for him is, probably a pay raise, and if the offense sucks for three years, it wasn't his fault.

Nowhere to go but up, unfortunately.

Did you know this guys name before last week?

Not sure why everyone is so thrilled with the hire when we literally know nothing about his philosophy.

Watching that 30 minute introductory press conference from Coen has done a lot to calm my nerves and ease my fears. He's obviously an intelligent guy who is incredibly enthusiastic about being our new OC. The guy has his cruise control set on 100 mph. I like that! I also like how he stated his goal wasn't to come in here and completely change how we do things. He said he would continue to run many of the same plays we currently use which have proven effective. But his plan is to expand upon that and become more efficient in other areas where we currently aren't doing so well. And it sounds like he is also very flexible in how he does things, being able to adapt his offense to fit whatever players he has on the roster. That was one of my other concerns. Was he merely a system coach who could do things one way and one way only, or could he innovate within his system? It sounds like we have an answer in the affirmative in that regard. He sounds like a very football savvy guy. I look forward to seeing what he can accomplish.

Kentucky leads the SEC with ginger coaches now 🍺

First thing I thought when I saw Coen's pic last week. I actually said to my lady jokingly that he was the guy from the ginger pic on one of the sites . She mentioned that to me when I told her he was hired.

Bingo. Idk what our offensive preparation and game plan was, but it sucked. Just lots of little dumb stuff.

I don’t know if it was Terry or what, but he couldn’t diagnose a defense. So that falls on Hinshaw and Gran. Then, they asked the poor kid to run that RPO shotgun junk that was painfully slow, horribly predictable, and hinged on Terry making a split second decision after the snap.

We also had Gran on the sidelines, and Hinshaw up top. Idk who was calling plays. The way we would line up, then stare over at Eddie to get a call was hard to watch over and over again.

We had an all SEC RB who averaged 12 carries a game...the same amount as our QB who just came back from knee injury.

Just a lot of head scratching stuff that can be cleaned up with a clear and cohesive offensive game plan. We don’t need a fancy new system or scheme. We just need to teach our players and put them in the best spot to succeed.

If no one has heard of him, then why is he considered one of the best up and coming coaches in the sport?

RECRUITS...LOL... ...recruits won't have heard of him.... read the sentences in the post...

Recruits don't decide who is "up and coming" in tbe coaching ranks. Other coaches and admin do. Recruits don't know squat about it if you've only been an OC at Maine.

We ran that stuff but we had a qb with zero pocket presence or ability to read a defense; and our wrs couldn't get open to save their lives.

He mentioned working with both wrs and qbs at the nfl. Thanks God because that's exactly what the dr ordered for this offense.

Really it's infuriating that we continued every year to hire a budget wr coach. No wonder those guys couldn't get open. Also no wonder recruiting that position slipped

Not sure why everyone is so thrilled with the hire when we literally know nothing about his philosophy.

I did not know Brad White before he was hired. I looked at his resume and wondered if he had coached much or was more administrative. But, I saw immediately what he brought to the team and knew that if he was not made DC, we would lose a young rising coach.

I will be patient. I don’t live behind the curtain of the coaching world. So, I will wait.

The staffs of NFL teams are usually all football minds with at least areas of expertise. I remember when Harbaugh went from being the ST coach at Philly to the HC at Baltimore. Some fans cried that he had never been a DC or OC, how could he be ready? I knew a guy in the Philly organization who loved Harbaugh and said the guy was going to be a star.

So, I recommend pumping the brakes. The guy seems a high energy guy who is a players’ coach. I don’t think his interview tells us much about what he plans, other than the fact that like Neil and Eddie, he claims he will not force players into a system, but will be creative to maximize our strengths. He even only suggested we might be under center some, but with a grin.

I think it is a story that both he and White come from Rhode Island.

At least white had DI coaching experience (Air Force). He was also brought in to coach linebackers for a year before being named DC. Had a chance to see him coach, recruit, and interact with players before giving him a promotion. This hire is completely different!

The process was the same. Stoops got behind the scenes and into the thoughts of people he respected to seek the guy he needed that was a rising star that might not otherwise be known at the college level.

Some here seem to think that this guy you never heard of was just plucked blindly. The fact you have never heard of him may mean that a lot of research went into the process. Stoops trusts his sources and his interview. He knows his sources know football.

By the way, Chip Kelly had not been an FBS OC when he was hired by Oregon to innovate the college game. :)

Probably won’t be until the 2022 or 2023 season until we see the biggest changes as far as philosophy goes because the staff will need to recruit to run what he ultimately wants to do.

Like I said before anything is better if he tries to pick up a 1st down on 3rd and long. Instead of going with 1 yard behind the scrimmage passes that get no where. I’m excited to see what this new coach does. As some have said we have a nice run game so mixing in some play action would be great also, which we never used. I think the biggest improvement of all I hope for is a coach that adapts, if the game plan isn’t working they change it instead of trying the same stupid strategy the whole game that goes no where with the deer in the headlights look.

I liked how he mentioned getting players in mismatch situations. We had to be one of the worst teams in America doing that. It was rare for us to get anyone wide open on a play.

We were once again near the bottom of CFB in snaps per game. Only four teams snapping the ball less times than us and the top team snapped it 26 more times a game.. With only 62 snaps it's hard to get your best player more than 12 touches a game. I really hope that stand up and look over to the sideline crap is over . I couldn't imagine playing in an offense with so little urgency as Grans. It was the equivalent of four corners in basketball..

If we win 10 games and only score 9 points a game, color me happy. I thought the name of the game was win the final score.
In the landscape of CFB in 2020, please don't tell me you even remotely think this is possible. If the GOAT believed that was possible, he would be doing it.
