Kentucky Baseball 2022

Sorry. Sorry. I hope I’m wrong. But it just seems to be trending that direction.

I imagine that you're probably right. I think he just did barely enough to keep his job for another year. I've mentioned it before, but a lot of people give him a pass for a lot of the problems we've had. 2018 was injuries, 2019 was because of mass turnover, and was a rebuilding year. 2020 never happened so we can ignore it. 2021 was better than we expected and we made the SEC tournament. None of these are very valid, IMO, but they can be used by someone arguing on his behalf.

I never like the argument doing just enough. I think you have to look at it from all sides. Is there enough that he did this year, to build into something successful next season. From the outside, no. 12-18 in conference play and a pathetic showing in the SEC tournament doesn’t build confidence. UK is losing 9 players to the transfer portal in 7 days. And some of these guys had their papers filled out before the final out against Florida. I heard, can’t confirm, that there were a few players who did not ride back with the team from Hoover. That brings me to my next point.

Next, you look at the locker room. To say there’s turmoil is a mild understatement. Guys cannot wait to leave Lexington. Now before you say this happens at every program I went and looked at the transfer portal list on D1Baseball. Out of 151 players they have listed as transferring, Kentucky has the most. The second most school has 4. You can say what you want about what happened on the field, but there’s no doubt in my mind that Mingione has completely lost the dugout. It’s telling when you read some of the players Twitter accounts. Now, sometimes players will clash with others and that’s to be expected. But a good coach knows how to handle those situations.

Mingione has zero business being the head coach of Kentucky baseball next season. He’s lost the team, the fans and from the looks of it, the respect from his peers. Now, Barnhartt will not be judged by his decision long term on keeping Mingione or not. But it will say a lot about him if he does. Mingione should have fired in Alabama. Will he now? My gut tells me no. My heart says I hope.

Unfortunately I think you’re right. When next year is a mess who do we blame?

Without a doubt, it will be Barnhartts. As I said in an earlier post. Mingione should have been allowed to leave Hoover as UKs coach.
Should not..

I have a question about Marsh. Why would you even have this meeting with one of your top pitchers coming back? He was 4th on the team in ERA. Pitched really well against Vandy. And had a pretty good chance at being one of the top weekend starter candidate
I’m telling you guys. Mingione will be the head coach next year.

Trip is aanother guy that deserved so so much better.
All of B3Ns best friends on the team Trip , Kiss , Marsh are all guys that like B3N were treated like total trash by Nick Mingione. Meanwhile Mingione is smooching "Brooksies" backside about how un-fathomable it is to him that Brooksie he never graduated from Kentucky. Surely his " concern" had NOTHING at all to do with the totally "genuine" story about it with dramatic back-ground music that BBN Tonight released right as Mingione was 1 and done in the postseason.

To hear the story told by both Brooksie and Mingione it was all Mingiones idea that Brooksie graduate and not Brooksies. Eddie is a grown gentleman well established in his career in our area as a coach. Why was
that so important to Nick Mingione that Brooksie graduates from UK but guys like Marshall he gave no one care about wether his diploma says University of Kentucky on it or Eastern Kentucky Tech Institute?

Do this. Make a list of the players on the roster that cannot transfer ( because of eligibility) and those that are highly likely to being drafted making it irrelevant to enter the portal ( And, Rhodes , Schultz, Kess etc ).

How many players remain that are even transferable? 9 so far is a larger percentage than last years 12 to 15 or whatever it was. The numbers are worse than what meets the eye here using a much moire practical metric to gauge transfers than the total number.

A couple of my buddies and I attended every game of the 2017 regionals whether UK was playing or not. At every UK game we sat next to Trip and Ben . They were both excited about their future and what it looked like for them and the program. Seemed like to outstanding young men .Don't know Ben's situation, but having recently lost a son my whole heart goes out to them for the sorrow and pain it causes 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

Many of these guys transferring leave in worse position than they were when recruited thanks to Mingiones terrible player evaluations ( KESSLER ) and lack of player development.

I met Trip one day he was volunteering.

Great young man.

He was totally. engaged and eager that day.

Mandatory volunteer work that Mingione was bragging about which again is taking credit for all the genuine time the players volunteered. Bragging about it being mandatory doesn't diminish the players intention to do something worthy within the community but its another example of Mingione drawing attention to himself by bragging about how volunteering is mandatory in the program. He can't help himself from making everything about him. This guy takes himself way too seriously. Coach Cal has more integrity in his pinkie finger than this clown does.

Less time making everything about him and maybe you would have a handle on players that might need some extra attention on and off the field.

So, here is something to chew on...

UK has now lost Daniels, Marsh, and Ramsey. We also lose Kammin.

That is 76.1 innings out of 451. That number looks a lot worse when you take out the starting pitching because almost all the innings from those 4 were in relief. If you do that then it is 76 out of roughly 248, or about 31 percent of the innings pitched in relief.

You also have the very real possibility that Harper leaves or hangs up his cleats and that is an additional 31 innings, moving that number closer to 43 percent.

Add in some others and you realize we're losing a ton and an even bigger workload falls on the rising sophomores and then with a freshman class ranked in the 40s.

I mentioned it on HOB, but it is pretty crazy how many people are outing the baseball program on Twitter. Patrick Loney for instance called out Mingione as the problem and when someone mentioned that Mingione seemed like a good guy, Patrick essentially says that Mingione is not what he seems.

UKFAN26 calls him an A hole. its hard to fathom someone can be as
phony as minion is, but it's true.

Jaden Brown was a perfect game all American which means he had a list of schools as long as his arm to choose from when he committed to coach Mingione and UK.

After one year without being injured he was pushed out, stripped of his scholarship without ever having stepped foot on a field and his value wasn't even half of what it was before he arrived when he hit the transfer portal last year. Thats the thanks he gets from Mingione after committing to UK after considering dozens of scholorship offers from power 5 programs.

Kessler would've entered the portal this year with the same diminished value that Brown entered the portal with last year , from 2 years of not playing and being passed over by Mingione had Rubalcas injury not forced Mingions hand ( Liebert was the second choice).

You think that was fair to Kessler ? After leading the team in hitting in the conference batting average wise in 2019 and not pursuing signing for the bare minimum post 2020 draft ( at Mingiones urging to return )?

if you were Jaden brown ,a perfect game all American that is now in a juco somewhere most likely, after being red shirted, stripped of scholarship and sent packing would you be able to listen to Mingiones nonsense about " family " and all the people carrying on about how great of a guy he is without saying " F that guy" ?

What he did to that player at Lex Catholic is nothing compared to only the. two above examples how many more of these exist ?

I saw that and he didn’t mince words. Straight out said Mingione is the issue.

Are we going to be able to field a team next season? If a Kentucky kid like Trae Harmon transfers... that's not good. He should WANT to play for his home state school.

Get rid of Ming

Where are the other local sports guys calling this mess out? Rowland, JDrum, Derek Terry, KSR...anybody?

It's actually pretty interesting. UK has just 10 KY players on its roster this season, out of 43 players. 1 of them graduates this year and 2 more are transferring (both of which actually played for UK quite a bit this year). Another one, Cottongame, already allegedly quit the team for lack of playing time this year after he came back from an injury. Lockhart is a senior that might also be in the portal as well, but I am not sure that he is yet.

So, 10 players from KY and half of those 5 are gone or are possibly gone.

The full list is:

Shelby
Hill
Lockhart
Cottongame
Harmon
Liebert (Junior 3rd string catcher)
Byers (Freshman who redshirted)
Rigsby (wouldn't surprise me to see him leave after not getting a ton of time)
Hord (Bullpen type catcher)
Hazelwood

So, again, it is pretty clear that things are not right that 1. We only have 10 guys and 2. Many are leaving. Ohh, and I think in the 2021 class UK is bringing in just 1, maybe 2 KY kids.

By the way, Louisville has 17 KY players out of 47.

Terry has been critical. Had a big nasty writeup at one point. Someone (don't remember who) mentioned that someone associated with the baseball program reached out to Terry and threatened him to get him to stop such negative reporting. Of course, I don't know if this is true or not.

I also heard that he disallowed other reporters and camera men from being in/around the dugout, especially if Mingione felt like he couldn't control what they'd write or release.

So, I think some of the bigger UK writers that actually do follow baseball are more careful about what they write so they don't lose press passes and such. Of course, again, what I have heard may not necessarily be true.

Rowland, Roush have commented on Twitter and not in flattering terms.
You would think Mitch would have to know the problems better than anyone. Once they hit Twitter from sports journalists, it’s hard for it to not get out to the fan base.

Sorry about the loss of your son, certainly more important than most things, but baseball should help with the loss, not be another loss.

I'd say he's well aware of the problems, what he thinks/does is the unknown. Maybe he'll dump NM at the moment of his choosing....maybe NM's sold him a bill of goods. What I'd like to know is why don't these media types ask him about the status of the program?

Wonder what other schools would do if their baseball program had declined like this one and their AD refuses to do anything about? Would all their fans not go to any of the games, march around the AD house day and night till he did something, have an insider go to the board about unbecoming behavior of an AD, etc......???

At Miss State they wouldn't be AD anymore. Donors would have them fired.

I know there's been a lot of rumblings at South Carolina with Ray Tanner. I mean, you have two coaches that either were fired or retired after one bad season. Kentucky is still living in the time were the only thing that matters is basketball. Baseball is such an afterthought.
