Kentucky Baseball 2022

Mitch Barnhart is the best athletic director in the country and has shown multiple times he's willing to cut bait earlier than most Ad's would. But he's also not perfect. The writing is on the wall with NM. It's time to move on.

You've got great facilities and a big budget to sell the next coach... We are a very good job.

I like Barnhart a lot. I think he's done more for UK than any other AD and has done more than most other ADs could do. I think he did great in hiring Cohen as the first coach after Madison to take over the program, but I think that both Henderson and now Mingione have been lackluster hires. I think he would have let Henderson continue to coach at UK for even longer had Henderson not himself walked away. Now, I fear he's going to do similar with Mingione. Both coaches clearly were not taking UK to any higher levels or getting us higher in the SEC pecking order. Instead, both wallowed in mediocrity. So, I hope that Barnhart changes his tune on Mingione and quickly.

Again, I'm a huge barnhart fan. Hit him with emails. That's how he interacts with fans and gets the pulse of the fanbase.

Well, we’ve found the Barnhartt spy. (Im kidding)

But to your points, no. He’s not the best AD in the country. He’s a good one. No doubt. But far from the best. He’s done more for UK in the minor sports than anyone before him. And he’s loyal to his coaches. Which is good to a point. You can’t tell me otherwise that Joker Phillips would not have been back in 2013 if the stadium was not empty for the Vandy game in 2012. He panders to one section of the fan base and doesn’t much care about the majority. The extension to Mingione, regardless of why he did it, was a huge mistake and will more than likely cost the university in the long run. He’s done nothing, at least in the public spotlight, to address the turmoil inside the baseball program. His success as an AD does not hinge on wether or not the baseball team is successful. But, when you have the issues that the team supposedly has, it can spill over to other programs. I like Barnhartt and I think he’s done a great job at UK, but hes not the best in the country.

Sure wish they would replicate that right field student deck at KPP. Atmosphere plus. You know the players would like to see their friends there.

Kentucky absolutely screwed over the long time baseball ticket holders. My family had 7 tickets since 2008, rarely missed a game and even went to a lot of away games. Come new stadium time, we were left out because we didn’t give enough to the K fund. There were people who bought season tickets the final year at Cliff Hagan Stadium that got a higher priority for the new stadium then a lot of long term ticket holders
Well, it’s Wednesday June 2nd at 9:09 am and Mingione

I don’t think NMs behavior will contaminate other programs I think it’s isolated to being an NM thing. Giving polished speeches at the Rotary Club ( while impressive ) shouldn’t give you a free pass to put your own ambitions over everything else in the baseball program. I didnt see U6 ripping through players at this frantic pace on their way to the top of the college baseball world.

Recruiting players And discarding them with a worse status than when they arrived ( and with very little evident development ) seems to be the norm simce NM arrived.

he seems to put his own ambitions over the players without any care for their own. Kessler a great example of that. It appears to me he is taking more from the program than giving. He is on a large salary and he is shredding through recruits discarding them almost as soon as they get here perfect game all Americans included and even when he has a really damn good one ( Kessler ) he banished them to no mans land only to result in having egg on his face over it.

They have a student section, but it is just basically GA seats behind the visitor dugout. Doesn't really encourage people to come and have a good time like The Cliff did.

If Mitch doesn't hurry up and fire Mingione, we may not have enough players remaining to field a damn team next season.
I’m guessing Mingiones job is very secure and he is cutting all these players going all in on the transfer portal with as much scholorship money he can free up from these cuts. You know, thats how U6 and Vandy does it don’t they ?

Im not saying so much about Mingiones behavior spewing over to other programs. What I meant was it gives the impression that 1) Barnhartt doesn’t know what’s going on, 2) Doesn’t care or 3)Doesn’t have the control over the program like he should. I don’t think it’s 1 or 2. And I don’t think it’s completely #3 either. But keeping Mingione, despite all the turmoil and player exodus that we’re seeing, just sends the wrong message to recruits, fans and supporters of the baseball program and that absolutely can effect other sports. It paints MB as a weak AD and that can and will be used against Kentucky.

Okay. I totally agree.

I think that no amount of e-mails will matter until the powers that be ($$$) decide to get involved, or until it is beyond clear that Mingione is not the answer. Barnhart has proven to be much more patient than the common fan. Sometimes that patience is right (Stoops) and other times it is wrong (Joker and Henderson). Pretty sure that way back when I sent an e-mail about Henderson. I'm sure I got a canned response type thing. Still, not a bad idea to try.

I think this thread if pretty telling. I started this thread just a week ago and it is already 10 pages long. There isn't a ton of people on here, but there is a lot of talk and discussion and very little of it is Mingione positive. This may be one of the longest threads on this board, if not the longest. I imagine it is most definitely the longest non-game thread.

People have an interest in baseball that’s not being reciprocated by UK.

Do you think that Barnhart is 1) so uncaring of the program because of his love for Mingione that he doesn't care about even looking at what is going on? 2) He really doesn't even know that half or more of the best players are wanting to leave? 3) he is just not into the program enough to have to go find another manager? 4) he knows the fans are irate about the manager and he not going to do anything to appease the fans right now, just stubborn like the checkerboard uniforms? 5) he is just dragging his feet on the matter and just hasn't taken the time to worry about it yet?

I think he regrets sinking cash into a new contract and the buy-out is prohibitive for him and would be an admission that he acted too quickly and maybe impulsively (could be the wrong word here). For a school that has really only recently invested in baseball, eating that money might be too much for him. I think he's looking at the short-sighted losses and not the long-term losses that leaving NM might lead to in the future. Just my take could be wrong of course.

he fired joker in his 3rd year one year removed from a bowl. To say he was too patient with joker is absurd.

It’s not much money. $800,000 is pocket change for our athletic department

No, he fired Joker because of the fan revolt at the Vandy game. Im fully convinced that if that hadnt happened, Joker would have stayed at least one more season.

People who are convinced this is true are a special bunch.
He had already started the search before joker was fired. Had already discussed potential candidates with Tim couch.

Who's out there as a sounding board for MB? What UK alum(s) or baseball donor(s) is there who MB could confide in, who could offer advise? I can't believe MB or any AD anywhere would let one of their sports turn belly up. Maybe I'm naive.

So, recently Barnhart has:
1) given Mingione a bad extension
2) Took interim tag off Elsy way too early into her first season.
3) Signed Cal to a ridiculous lifetime contract
4) Signed Stoops to a ridiculous contract that adds an additional year after winning 6 games. Just a stupid clause that nobody else has.

All of these were terrible decisions

lol.

I just can't get past Barnhart extending the guys contract as disasterous as the program has become. I mean, the AD at UK possibly being that dense or caring more for one guy over all those players, families and fans? Comes down to those two things because anybody with any sports knowledge would know how the program has fallen and still on the way down.

That Elzy thing had to be one of the stupidest things an AD could possibly have done. That would be something worthy of a comedy show that could not be serious. Even his staunchest supporters would have to admit that being as low IQ as your are going to get in an AD job. I just look at the job the man does and have no underlying personal feelings about him as a person off the court. I know he can't be right on every hire. But at the same time don't expect a man in his position to do what he has done in the womens basketball and baseball programs. Have to be smarter than that.

passing judgement on the basketball hire at this point is the definition of low IQ.

She has been a mediocre recruiter for years. The lack of respect her players showed her this year showed it all. Laughing and not playing hard a lot of the time. Guess you was OK with that. Maybe the new HOF coach can help her be decent but that should be the head coach had Barnhart not made his bonehead mistake. Maybe all the sudden she becomes a great recruiter and her players start playing for her with respect. But what is the chances of that?

Had Barnhart not extended Mingiones contract I would not had any qualms with him keeping him this long. He gave the man plenty of time up until the contract thing. But not taking the golden opportunity to try and make a move for the better was not the right thing to do. Maybe he is trying to find a replacement first and everybody is saying no to the man. It makes no sense to let the program go deeper and harder to get out of going another year.

Mingione asking for an extension to help him do his job better with new players shows you how arrogant he is.

What if Kessler after the first month of the season told Mingione that he needed to play because none of the programs he wants to transfer to is going to want a player that was a 3rd string catcher and didn’t play the entire season. Or get drafted for that matter.

Do you think Mingione would’ve shown Kessler the courtesy that he was asking MB for ?

its a hypothetical but still.

lastly which one of them was more deserving ?

Kessler getting at bats and playing time ? Or Mingione getting an extension ?

you don’t understand how things work. Kids aren’t returning for an extra year if they don’t think they have a chance at success.
Just stop
Stop what? What's to say some didn't come back just to have a good ole time like they had all season not being held accountable to bust it on the court at all times. Without discipline their success will be minimum of what they could do under a coach they truly respect. Like I said, maybe the HOF coach will have enough influence to help them have a decent year. But having to work under Elzy will definitely take a lot of that influence away.

NVM. On 4th point, stoops gets an extension after 7 wins. I thought it was eliminated on his most recent contract
