It's time to discuss. Who our new coach will be next season

Who's paying the $33 million???????

Until UK finds a way to pay the buyout, we are STUCK with Cal. Sad, but that's where we are because of Mitch's INCOMPETENCE!!!!

So, there won't be ANY "List" for at least the next 3 seasons.

SAD
Joe Craft was close to CAL rumored they had a falling out net worth 1.7 billion. Tamara Gustavson’s net worth 7.2 billion.

I dont care about baggage or their personal lives. I mean self is like the dirtiest SOB in basketball. GIVE ME PITINO ALL DAY. no better coach in the country. Once he starts winning he will be loved again. also one of the few coaches who can deal with pressure of being at a blue blood.. if we are still considered one Im not sure

Yikes, thanks for the information. M Jones actually referenced something happening with Cals hiring last night but insinuated he couldn’t talk about it until Cal is gone. Look, I’m ready for COW to be gone, but could you imagine if they got Brey? That’s an alternate universe I don’t want to consider..
Brey...from the clueless halfwit who brought you Joker and Clyde...

How many times does Billy Donavan have to SAY NO ,before folks accept that he doesn't want to coach here. Hurley is not gonna come here ,he has a better job right now. In truth alot of folks seem delusional about the UK job ,it isn't that attractive right now. I would be elated if Drew Oats or Beard agreed to come. UK IS A MESS right now,we are going to have to take what we can get.

Pitino to return would have to put up a utube video showing him cover up that UL tat with a KY one then maybe he can return

The new coach will need to have something to gain by coming here.. the UK brand to help push them over the top and give them an advantage. Pearl is the guy and should be the first and only call. Whether you like him or not he has the personality, coaching acumen, and drive to get us back on top. The wolf climbing the hill is always hungrier than the one sitting at the top. Cal is lazy, unmotivated, and couldn’t care less about the UK brand any longer.

1. Not good enough
2. Never leaving
3. Retired for a reason
4. Never, ever happening

Call Pearl or Oats.
Pearl
Negatives: Not an X & O guy (or even close); not ideal age-wise.

Positives: Maybe the best motivator in the game, and who cares how he gets it done (e.g., X & Os vs. System vs. Motivator).

Oats
Negatives: Not a strong defensive guy; players don't always seem to play as hard as they should; not sure he can handle the "duties" that come (or, contrary to Gillispie's thoughts on the matter, should come) with the UK job outside of the team.

Positives: Best offensive philosophy based on analytics, and he makes his players adhere to it religiously.

Just some thoughts, SFC. I'd take either right now.

Theirs only a handful of Bluebloods and KY is one of the biggest stages to call home. They all want to be the guy everyone of them. Bama could win a title and 90 percent of their fanbase would not even care.
You obviously don't remember the last TWO coaching searches, turns out there were quite a few candidates that didn't feel like crawling

Low standards. Calipari has won the sec many times and won his conference at Memphis and UMass many times.

Lloyd may come here and do well but he is a risk due to what the other poster mentioned. He underachieves n the ncaa tournament and we don't have enough body of work to know how he will be long term n that regard.

We need a guy that has proven he can win in March. The conference titles will come as a supplement to that.
Lloyd has only been head coach at Arizona for 2 years counting this year. Been to ncaa his only year and will be there this year.

Just looking from the outside as a CBB fan, Kelvin Sampson has looked like the best coach in the game recently – and that includes Self, Pearl, Pitino or anyone else I’ve seen recently. But age????

Thoughts on Mark Pope? I haven’t followed his career closely. Is he considered a good X & O guy? I know he’s smart – was in the middle of medical school when he decided he really wanted to be a basketball coach. (Apologize if it's been discussed already, I didn't read through the entire thread)

this isnt the time to be giving a coach who doesnt have an extensive resume the reins to this program. This has to go to a coach who knows the pressure and has been there before A LOT. giving this program to an up an comer would be the dumbest mistake ever. Look at our history, you really want the same mistakes as before?

No thread-bare retreads. BARNHART CANNOT BE INVOLVED ... AT ALL. The search should be comprised of UK alumnus and ex-UK players ... no POLITICS. The decisions should be made solely on merit and potential. Just no worn-out thread-bare retread coaches looking for a comfy place to retire while being over-paid.
Excellent idea

If he is fired , why would he be picking his successor exactly ?
I want Cal gone as much as anyone here, but they are not going to fire him baring either a full fan revolt, or the Crafts etal pick up the tab. It is just too much money.

Todd Golden is a Bruce Pearl protege who just kicked Pearls butt. Also not near as annoying as Pearl
Golden is a high risk hire, but I like him. He was a great point guard at St. Mary's so he should be able to teach and recruit that spot. Florida is a very fundamentally sound team and he has good poise on the sideline. Some should like that he is a Bruce Pearl acolyte. He is really young so we will have to deal with the growing pains.

I'm still all in on Hurley. He wants to coach about ten more years and then retire. Ten years is about the length of a UK coach's career. Perfect fit.

No matter who it is we may have to accept the fact that the first hire might not be the one. It will most likely be rough for awhile.

Somewhere between Clyde (minus the alcoholism) and Cal's current spiral...

Holtmann would be even worse...heck, give me Paris, Golden, May or a similar young up and comer...

We may not have a choice, depending on how the fiscal reality of Brainfarts contracts shake out.

Donovan turning us down is why he got Gillespie.
My take on it is -
Barnhart panicked and did not want word of coaches turning down UK, so he did a rush job to lock in Gillespie shortly after Donovan , who I believe initially agreed to take the job, got cold feet while the AD of Florida was throwing everything at him.

That's why Gillespie wasn't properly vetted. It was a handshake, come to Kentucky, we'll work out the details later kind of thing
Actually Mitch met with Billy for 19 hours thru the night because they had to get it done. A big thing with this was making sure they kept Patrick Patterson in the fold. Billy was a hot coach at the time and had brought programs back from the dead. At the time most Cat fans were pleased with the hire as I recall. All in the past. Plenty of good coaches now to replace who we have now.

get a contract signed?

I dont doubt anything you said is true, but it was still a rush job and as much as I like Patrick Patterson, you don't sign a coach on a player that may or may not come to the program

Stevens gets call…..says not leaving the best nba team & I’m in the front office.

Hurley gets the next call…..why would I leave UConn when I’m making another title run so now leaving.

Next call should be to Chris beard, but will be Scott drew per Matt jones. Not who I want but he does have a title, think the job will be too much for him. Jmo.

I want beard, Oates, then pearl in that order.
I like this list. Not a fan of hiring Drew for the simple fact that he has won a title. Fire in his belly can't be burning as hot as a coach seeking that championship validation

Hire Sean Woods for less than what we pay one of Cal assistants be worth a shot can’t be any worse, that would cost less than what we’re paying now

That’s been addressed in other threads. The buyout is paid over multiple years and UK athletics is operating in the black. Of course it isn’t ideal but UK can afford to fire John Calipari. And if we flame out in the first weekend of the tournament, or miss it altogether, UK may have to.

Didn't know that. Interesting.

Yeah, at the time, Cal was my first choice, but I remember being happy with the Cylde hire. I don't think anyone could've predicted how it eventually played out.

I get it, they won’t most likely fire him, this year. But people are still talking about him picking his successor. If he gets a huge buyout you can rest assured he loses all association with the university. He sure doesn’t get the right to pick the next coach after he is fired and gets a buyout. Even Mitch isn’t that dumb.

watching Torres talk about Oates, he says it would cost UK $18m to get him - $10m buyout, $8m salary

if UK tanks in the tourney this year

I'd be willing to bet serious money Cal isn't here next year.

They'll find a way, however I would be hugely embarrassed if my school paid a coach millions of dollars to leave a program he trashed.

I think there should be a massive PR campaign to publicly shame Cal in to leaving based on his performance.

What you say is all true and is what should happen. He's laid waste to this PROGRAM and expects to be rewarded, based on an employment contract. The same contract that should have a description of expectation of performance minimums. Cal's own words, made publicly, suggests his priorities are not in alignment with what any prudent person would deem to be expected for a coach whose priority is to win games and recruit to build rosters that can compete and win in accordance with UK's tradition and history. Cal has completely gone off the reservation with his altruistic madness. UK should consider a firing for cause and breach of contract at which time his best option would be to resign for any BS reason so he can save face, otherwise this shitshow will only get ugly and his incompetence will be further exposed. I know, I know ... but, I guy can wish.

What has he won? Team underperforms every year with above average talent. No thanks we already have one of those.
He hasn't really been coaching long enough to say that. But if you go read what Arizona fans are complaining about this year you'll think you were reading complaints about Cal. They're complaining about the same exact things UK fans are.

UK is still one the most coveted jobs in sports. when money talks coaches listen. my only concern is do we have an ad who can make the right decision.
