It's time to discuss. Who our new coach will be next season

Drew and Holtmann are candidates 1a and 1b...Brainfart is such an idiot, for years he had a man crush on done-nothing Brey, who would have been the hire if not for the Pratt led booster rebellion.

He needs to be nowhere near the next hire, but if he has the call, you can expect it to be Drew, so they can hold hands in Sunday School.

I totally agree. Drew is not the answer and that's exactly who Barnhart will get.

Somewhere between Clyde (minus the alcoholism) and Cal's current spiral...

Holtmann would be even worse...heck, give me Paris, Golden, May or a similar young up and comer...

We may not have a choice, depending on how the fiscal reality of Brainfarts contracts shake out.

I call and try for YES a THIRD time, Billy Donovon who is 58 yrs old and in his 4th and final year of contract at the Chicago bulls where it isn't going well. Billy was once an assistant at UK for all who don't remember and ruled the sec and college ball until Calipari came along and had his great first 5 years at UK.

After Donovon and Wright say no.... I say ask Dan Hurley, Chris Beard, then Nate Oats.... Scott Drew would be literally my way way back-up plan and that is mitch's #1. Mitch needs to not be in charge of this pick, because he hired Billy Clyde, Joker Phillips and gave this Dumb contract to Calipari.

Are you sure he was really ever offered? I heard that he said UK didn’t really show much interest
I remember reading it somewhere, but it's been a very long time. I believe one of the times was before they offered Cal. But I couldn't begin to tell you where I read it. My memory is going as I'm a lot older now..

if no obvious good coach is available then I don't see why you can't hire a gatekeeper.

The transfer portal makes the "player flight" of coaching changes irrelevant. You have player flight now with coaches staying.

You want your coach to succeed, have a dump truck full of NIL money ready

There are 4 coaches that would be slam dunk hires

1. - Scott Drew, won a national championship at lowly Baylor. Imagine with all the UK program has to offer what he could do here. Plus he would probably bring Top 5 recruit VJ Edgecombe along with him.

2.- Dan Hurley, won a national championship at UConn might win another one this year. UK could double his salary

3. - Jay Wright, 4 Final Fours 2 national championships. Has nothing but nice things to say about UK. Might be totally thru with coaching but if he's getting the urge to coach again. No better place to do it than Kentucky

4. - Billy Donovan, 4 Final Fours 2 national championships. If he's getting tired of the NBA & want's to get back into college coaching with his background at UK. This might be the time for him to come here.

If we can keep our recruiting class together & 5 or 6 players from this years team like Edwards who might realize that he needs another at UK, plus Sheppard, Thiero, Burks & either one of our 7' footers. Then add in a big time transfer shooter at the shooting guard position. Either one of these 4 coaches could very likely lead that team to the national championship next season.
No thread-bare retreads. BARNHART CANNOT BE INVOLVED ... AT ALL. The search should be comprised of UK alumnus and ex-UK players ... no POLITICS. The decisions should be made solely on merit and potential. Just no worn-out thread-bare retread coaches looking for a comfy place to retire while being over-paid.

The guy isn't perfect. Little history. Little long in the tooth. But he and BBN seem like a perfect fit. He wouldn't be here 15 years, but I guarantee his time would be back to fun basketball. Pitno-lightish, if you will. Plus, I'd be really shocked if he turned down an offer. He'd probably be my fist call. Mostly because I think Oats would stay at Bama.
I kinda agree with Pearl but to say Oats wouldn’t come to Lexington is laughable. You can count on one hand the number of active College Coaches that wouldn’t crawl to Coach KY.

Who's paying the $33 million???????

Until UK finds a way to pay the buyout, we are STUCK with Cal. Sad, but that's where we are because of Mitch's INCOMPETENCE!!!!

So, there won't be ANY "List" for at least the next 3 seasons.

SAD
This.

if UK tanks in the tourney this year

I'd be willing to bet serious money Cal isn't here next year.

They'll find a way, however I would be hugely embarrassed if my school paid a coach millions of dollars to leave a program he trashed.

I think there should be a massive PR campaign to publicly shame Cal in to leaving based on his performance.

Stevens gets call…..says not leaving the best nba team & I’m in the front office.

Hurley gets the next call…..why would I leave UConn when I’m making another title run so now leaving.

Next call should be to Chris beard, but will be Scott drew per Matt jones. Not who I want but he does have a title, think the job will be too much for him. Jmo.

I want beard, Oates, then pearl in that order.
My gawd ... Pearl would be a disaster of epic proportion.

Actually, in a similar thread a week or so ago, @ralphdaltonfan laid out a pretty convincing argument as to why Oats might elect to stay at Bama. I wouldn't count on a "yes" from Oats.

The last one to "crawl" to Lexington was Eddie Sutton. I think that trip was too much time spent in ditches and ended up as an alcoholic by the time he got here.

Desperate times calls for desperate measures. I don't see him having any interest in the job, but UK isn't in the position to hold ill-will feelings towards a candidate of that stature.
I can see your point. Personally, I wouldn't want him, but if he can get us wins and a post season run, then I would swallow my pride and say yes ( like I matter anyway...lol🤣🤣).

Theirs only a handful of Bluebloods and KY is one of the biggest stages to call home. They all want to be the guy everyone of them. Bama could win a title and 90 percent of their fanbase would not even care.

You would think the University wouldn’t be obligated to pay the remainder of his contract. However, it is clear that either it was written into his contract or the University looks the other way at his lackluster performance.

Yea, I think it was around that time or a little after. Seems like I saw him say it on a YouTube video but I can’t find the video now

I can respect why anyone doesn't want Pearl at UK, but curious as to why you think it'd be a disaster hire?
With his past and probation history who's bounced around the SEC, hiring this guy, IMO, would be a tumble down the stairwell. I just cringe at the thought of him being the "face" of the program. UK can pick and choose and we should do just that. He wants the UK job too badly and has hinted for years but he has too much baggage. He's a descent coach but there are many, many very good coaches out there. He's just not who I would want as the face of the program. When Pitino was hired, I didn't have a clue about him. Young, some-what proven but innovative and aggressive is what I would like to see. Someone hungry and someone who understands UK's history and tradition. All this, IMO, needs to start with a new AD. This AD will only be interested in a hire that he can safely defend and one that would require the least amount of work on his part. Barnhart will want Scott Drew but he's just to "vanilla" for the UK hire but the perfect hire for Barnhart and what motivates him and him only.

I echo your thoughts on a Drew hire. And for the same reasons. Drew wouldn't be in my top 3, probably outside my top 5 honestly.

no, I"m not arguing they won't owe him the remainder of his contract from a legal standpoint. That won't change.

I'm just of the position that at this point, if he thinks he deserves that money to walk away from this mess, he's a complete douche.

He came here with it being his dream job, and his arrogance has turned his mind into a position of where he is "owed" millions to walk away from turning in historically bad performances.

Donovan turning us down is why he got Gillespie.
My take on it is -
Barnhart panicked and did not want word of coaches turning down UK, so he did a rush job to lock in Gillespie shortly after Donovan , who I believe initially agreed to take the job, got cold feet while the AD of Florida was throwing everything at him.

That's why Gillespie wasn't properly vetted. It was a handshake, come to Kentucky, we'll work out the details later kind of thing

Yikes, thanks for the information. M Jones actually referenced something happening with Cals hiring last night but insinuated he couldn’t talk about it until Cal is gone. Look, I’m ready for COW to be gone, but could you imagine if they got Brey? That’s an alternate universe I don’t want to consider..
