Thamel, of all people, had an interesting article yesterday...which I think refutes the notion that firing Pitino would have lessened penalties...at least the vacating of wins.
We are under the new penalty structure, which the member schools themselves wanted. It took a lot of discretion out of the penalty phase. With Memphis, the COI took a "strict liability" stance on their own, which they obviously didn't apply to Kansas and Duke. But under the new guidelines, they are following the guidelines regarding holding a head coach responsible and suspending them, and automatically vacating games in which ineligible athletes participated.

I revel in the fact that Louisville's fan base (and many other fan bases) dickishly predicted back in 2009 that Kentucky would find itself in violation of major NCAA recruiting rules under Calipari, that it was only a matter of time...and today, over 8 years later, it is Louisville that has been as disgraced as a basketball program can be, while Pitino looks absolutely shameless and utterly ridiculous for refusing to accept any responsibility and railing against the very insignificant punishment he received...while UK remains virtually clean as a whistle.
Basically its all Chuck Smrt's fault but if they can get the best attorneys that handled cases that arent similar to this at all then the banner stays and LHCRP is VINDICATED.
What is there to appeal? A member of your F'ing staff bought hookers for players and recruits (some minors). This is documented fact, you stupid MFers. This is the easiest NCAA case of all-time. There is no gray area here.

I think going to an appeal with only the argument of "hey man that punishment was pretty mean" is a strong play.

They can't appeal any of the findings. The only thing they can appeal is a technicality like they did when Crum was there as mentioned above.
But their only argument is the money wasn't enough to make the athletes permanently ineligible. Which is ludicrous when you take into account the money was for sex given to them by a coach.

I think their appeal centers around their argument that if the NCAA had known at the time about the "extra benefits" those players received, the players would have only been suspended x number of games, based on precedent of players receiving nominal monetary extra benefits.
But the NCAA didn't know, because, well U of L orchestrated a systematic cover-up.

But the idiot stupid MFer's dont realize is the NCAA would have never discovered it because it was intentionally hidden as a recruiting advantage by their own staff member.

A lot of truth to this. My brother-in-law is a Louisville fan and I remember talking to him the week the initial story broke expecting a lot of the same bulls*** I'd been hearing online. He had no excuses, and said he wasn't sure if he'd continue being a fan and if he did it wouldn't be to the same level.

I really don't see the point in keeping Pitino any longer. The brand is completely tarnished, and yeah, he's a Hall of Fame coach but if you cut your losses now you can at least say the University of Louisville is doing this now because we realize the colossal damage that's been done and we want our fans, alumni, students and future students know that we do care about the reputation of this university and city or you let him linger 4 or 5 more years to finish out his career on his terms and being a national joke. I'd also be having night terrors if I'm UofL fan thinking, at some point, there's going to be an enormous scandal with Petrino too because that is an inevitability.
I hope they keep Pitino. I think many of the top coaches would jump at the opportunity to coach at Louisville. It's a good job in a situation that will buy you tons of time to "rebuild". Meanwhile, Pitino is going to slip into mediocrity for years until he decides to retire.

The argument for keeping Pitino is built on the delusion that they can still wiggle out of this. If you fire Rick, that means you've stopped fighting, you've admitted that this was all terrible, that Rick ultimately was a failure, and that you're going to wear this scarlet letter for decades. (All of that is true anyway, but they don't get that yet.)

I'd like to see the appeals committee get so incensed that Pitino would be such a petulant p!ssant and appeal such a light punishment that they remand the matter with orders to increase the suspension to one year.

Nice to see the local media coming around and all...but something they seem to have left out of their HAM articles is that they don't have clean hands in this mess either. They fostered a media environment where Jurich, Pitino, and UL as a whole had no watchdogs, had to answer to nothing. Of course, they acted like they were untouchable...for a decade, they were!
