I mean, I've only been there once, and it was a while ago...but yeah, the beaches suck. The town was pretty expensive, and the bar tenders just expected way too much.
It is nice, but would not be my first choice.

Having lived on an island for just a few months, it really takes a short amount of time before you want to murder any dickhole that's singing (a) Jimmy Buffet or (B) Brown Eyed Girl in a bar. There quickly reaches a point where you want to walk on stage and urinate in Dickhole's sound hole and smash a bottle over his head.
It's awesome. Spent 4 days in San Juan & 3 days in Vieques a few years ago.
The beaches in Vieques are unreal...you can pick all sorts of secret ones and have the entire place to yourself. Beaches in San Juan aren't much, but it's a blast -- food/culture/lassies are off the charts, and Old San Juan is like a slice of Europe in the Caribbean. Plus, Casinos.
Was pretty much like 2 separate vacations in one week -- highly recommend.
Duval St is a party but the other 95% of the Island is very chill. It's loaded with really good restaurants and old charm. It's absolutely nothing like what you are expecting, it would be wodie for a couple get-a-way. The beach is a bit of an issue and the real issue is how much it cost and hard it is to get to.
But once you get there I think it's pretty awesome. It's basically the Highlands on an Island.

Apparently some yeti tumblers are dishwasher safe. A guy tweeted yeti two info cards from a 20 and 30oz tumbler. One said dishwasher safe, and one said not to put in dishwasher. Yeti said they were sorry about the confusion and the card had outdated info. I think this is bullshit. I can't trust them. Vieques Mosquitos are on another level -- I mean, REALLY bad, even during the day. Definitely would not go there at the moment.

Proposed to my wife in Key West. Best way I enjoy doing it: Fly into Miami and rent a car and then drive down there. For whatever reason I just absolutely love that ride and think its amazing. Also lets you explore the other keys and not just be on Key West the whole time. The food is absolutely incredible as well - don't think we had a single bad meal. Overall I thought it was great for a couples get-away.

Vieques looks to be picking up. I went back in 2008 but it seems to be changing.
I'm looking at a 10 to 14 day jaunt in PR and I want to spend 2 days on each end in San Juan, maybe less.
Where did you eat in Vieques? I remember eating at Bananas (great prime rib) and the pizza place you can get to from Al's bar, that one fancy place, and then a whole lot of nothing.
We stayed in Isabel II. Went to Esperanza one night to Banana's...then drank along the Malecon at the various bars.
I'd have to look it up, but had a Mofongo (Sabores)that was one of the best meals of my life in Isabel. Had lunch out of that Sol Food truck a few days, and there was a little bakery in town (Panaderia La Viequense) that had breakfast sambos on pressed Cuban bread that was ridicto.
Then, our host James, a real life Tarzan, went out and caught us Fish & Lobster one day with his spear and nets he gets to on his surfboard and cooked us up a feast on his deck.

Had my bi-weekly phone call with my dad this morning. He's a contractor. He told me a story about renting a dumpster and having it filled overnight with trash bags of shit and looking at a $600 bill to dump stuff that didn't come from his job.
His response? He had his guys open the bags and look for addresses and there were a bunch of repetitive bills, etc. So he had them fill up the trucks with anything that had the specific address in it and drop it off on the front porch of that address.

Nah, I'm good. I was there for my good friends and their child so pretty great experience. Just venting that it appears my archaic religion seems to be holding on rather than progressing. Mainly salty about a derogatory example they used when an unfortunate couple realized they chose homosexuals as their child's god parents.
