GOLF thread

LIV is toast for the most part, or at least as you see it currently. Their players will need knee pads when they go crawling back to join the PGAT.
Why would they want to go back under the thumb of the PGA? Unless the Saudi’s just throw the LIV players under the bus, I don ‘t see that happening.

I would assume they will get paid, whether through appearance fees, PIP money, or some straight out arbitrated number based on their worth.

Curious as to how money was paid to LIV guys. All up front? If LIV folds do they get all their money? Did everyone get all their money?
Rich Lerner addressed this. He gave Mickelson as an example. He said he got 200M, 100M upfront and then three payments of 33.3M. He said to join the tour again, he'd have to forfeit the 2024 and 2025 payments, among other concessions. I'm not sure he'll want to do it as that would be $ 66M he'd have to give up.

Rory's comments today make me feel like he was contacted yesterday or even before it came out and a) paid handsomely to tout the deal and b) was happy to hear that Norman was exiled. They are all clowns at the end of the day.

The LIV tour as you know it will be no longer....they won't have much of a choice if they want to play professional golf. As Rory said...the PIF will be funding the DP and PGA tours.

Rory today: "I still hate LIV. Like, I hate LIV. I hope it goes away, and I would fully expect that it does."

LIV might not be going anywhere. Why? Because all the guys that moved over have to give up the remaining installments of their contract to rejoin the PGA, plus all the other punishment. It is not going to be even close to worth it for many of them to rejoin the PGA. Gonna be interesting.

This is an incredibly complex deal they have to figure out. Over time it could look very good for Jay’s legacy but right now it impossible to know how this will end up going. Ultimately, the Saudis got what they wanted out of this deal which was their dirty hands in the PGA’s pot.

But what incentive do the Saudis have to continue to fund a league that's very unlikely to be bringing them a return on their investment? I don't see why they would want to be pumping money into both tours.

I pulled up the leaderboard on ESPN and after looking through the first 5 or 6 guys I had to do a double take to make sure I wasn't looking at the Korn Ferry tour as I didn't recognize any of the names.

Watching Korn Ferry. Teater was leading but dude just went birdie, birdie, birdie, eagle on him and is on a tough par 3 in regulation with two holes to go.

That was tough to watch Teater blow that lead and even tougher watching the post match interview. You know at his age he knows his chances at wins are limited and he missed out on one there.

4 of the top 8 or so on that board have multiple tour wins and 2 more have 1 each. You must not watch much golf.
Yes you are right I would rather be out playing golf with my daughter than watching someone else play. I was just saying that there wasn't any of the regular top guys like Rory, JT, Spieth, Finau, Rahm, etc at the top of the leaderboard after day 1. I didn't realize my golf fandom was going to be put into question for an obvious observation. 😂

Me too actually, but that is why they make DVR to tape and watch later. Tbh, I dont watch many sports events live, tape and watch later in 1/2 the time

You may want to hold your tickets on this one, it is an agreement to agree, Devil will be in the details

You know what must happen now! Building on to the Ryder and President's Cup, now must have the Oil Cup, LIV vs Eurotour vs PGA.

A little of what was told to the employees from Monahan:

1. Both Liv and the Tour were bleeding money and neither could sustain it. This stops that and the litigation.
2. Took a jab at Norman. Said all personnel decisions haven't been decided yet.
3. With regards to dealing with Saudis, no one at the Tour works for them and they have no power over the Tour.
4. Media is mislabeling this a merger. It's an agreement to form a for-profit with PIF.
5. Monahan says it's all on him for the 180.

The rumors are Monahan steps down as commish within the next year and goes full-time as CEO with the new venture.

No. 1 above was by far the most important point. It always comes down to the money.

No one believes it but the Tour had already put in place elevated purses. When LIV came on the scene, it forced the Tour's hand to move it forward sooner than they wanted to. When the litigation started, it all became untenable.

I agree, it's money. Both entities can spend on other things instead of court cases now.

Regarding #4… the initial PGA press release called it a merger.

I skimmed it and it says something like "merge operations" but also says "partner with". I think Monahan was feeling blow back from inside and wanted to reassure the employees they weren't getting new bosses.

But, it is an entirely new entity that is for-profit.

Good bet Sponsors were not happy for various reasons including the PGA losing players to LIV including some big draws like Brooks, Cam, Dustin and Bryson. Not well versed on how that all works but am assuming the PGA needed more money from them due to the increased purses and was getting pushback.
