GOLF thread

I'd like to see a tournament where the pro's use old-school clubs and balls. Stuff from the 70's if not older. So persimmon woods, etc....
Paul Casey recently hit some range shots with an old style persimmon driver. His results were surprising. Improved ball technology is probably the biggest difference today in distance.

The calculation uses the best 10 rounds of your last 20, and then is a % of that over par adjusted for slope.
Forgive me in advance if I’m wrong, but I thought handicap used best 8 of 20 scores.

Also, some of our club tourneys only allow a percentage of handicap. Seems like a big advantage for low handicap golfers. As an 8 handicap, I play for enjoyment, so it’s not such a big deal. Now that I’m recently retired, I have all summer to reduce my handicap.

Talor Gooch gets an exemption to play in PGA Championships.

The Fried Egg states:
Some have suggested that the top-10 players in the LIV standings be exempt into majors. But the simple answer to all of this is exactly what the PGA of America did this week: give exemptions to players they feel are worthy. The likes of Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson, and Cameron Smith already have major exemptions for now, but if the tournament organizers want guys like Gooch in the field, just invite them.

Interesting. I thought he was with Tiger or he would be done. Stevie, Bones and now Joey.
Don't know anything about Cantlay's old caddie but will Joey make him that much better?

I'm going off memory, but think it's 10, or at least was 20 years ago when I would calculate it for me and my friends before our annual Myrtle Beach golf trip every year. I could be wrong, you should be able to look it up though.
Also if you don't have 20 rounds, then it changes (i.e. 7 of last 16 rounds).
And you can count 9-holes IF you played the other 9 at the same course in consecutive outings.

So in other words the PGA is doing exactly what it is I said they should have done from the beginning. It reminds me of what Churchill said about Americans: "The Americans will always do the right thing... after they have exhausted all the alternatives."

Rory is back on tour after resting up instead of sucking it up like he told all his comrades to do. [laughing]

Interesting. Maybe you would see a bigger drop w/ the irons. I know When I switched from my 1998 irons to 2017 irons, I saw at least a full club distance change (i.e. hitting a 7 as far as I used to a 6), and I think the ones used in the 70's were much worse than the late 90's.

And that’s probably fools gold, new clubs just lofted different. Old 6 is new 7 loft.

I do realize there is material and design innovation also that contribute

Actually I think I knew that, although I hit them just as high. But heck I hit all my irons high (a "picker", not a "trapper").

The iron lofts now are 4-6 degrees stronger than they were back then.

^^^9 yrs old is ridiculous and too young, regardless of the rules. She's playing courses now in tournaments that are 4500-5000 yds.

It is the best 8. It either used to be 10, or 10 was the number of rounds used to calculate the "trending" number.

Had been playing with Mizuno MP14's for a few years and they are a more traditional loft of 36° for the 7 iron. I now play Mizuno Pro225's and the 7 iron is 30°. One club different.

It’s one club plus two degrees. My7 iron is also 36 and my clubs are four degrees apart making my 6 iron 32 degrees. I took my lofts from the 90’s and now depending on the brand, they vary 4-6 degrees. To each his own but I don’t like all the strong loft stuff. If I have to I will just back down a club. Can’t afford new clubs and don’t want to mess with bending mine.

PGA Tour adding a tour stop in 2024 next to one of their elevated events. The Dunes Resort in Myrtle Beach will be the host. Great course, history, and it is one helluva fun course to play for those that have been on MB golf trips.

Friend of mine is a member there. Have played it several times. Fun track. Will likely see some pretty low scores though. He is a +1 player and shoots in the 60's rather often. Field will be rather "meh" though since it coincides with the Wells tournament. Regardless, he/they are really excited about getting the event.

That could be entirely accountable to newer irons having stronger lofts. In other words your 7 is the same loft as your old 6 iron.

It will be a slightly better field than the Barbasol but the course itself will be a fun one, especially for TV, and it should have a nice gallery given the location.

Not sure if true or just rumor but a PGA caddie is saying the new Myrtle Beach event is replacing the Barbasol.

I previously mentioned we won't get the event back unless they get a new sponsor

But Barbasol is opposite the Scottish open. Not the Wells Fargo so don't see why that would matter.

Or he could have made the smart decision and have 5x what he just made and be set for life?
Would he have made that much? He said in an interview that everyone has a number and he was not offered anywhere close to it. He, also, was not eligible for the Masters, no PGA last year, so he would not have been a lock for future majors.
So, he stayed and now that number would have to be a lot higher. He has qualified for next years Masters, and all the other majors.
He has not vested in his cut money yet.
A lot to give up.

Which of these top 5 leaderboarders will you cheer for tomorrow?

Zechhend Dou
Austin Eckroat
Vincent Norman

If a first timer can change his life w/ a W in this historic event, then I am all for it. That is what makes this tour so awesome.

Beating Scottie, Day, Palmer and Hatton will be a tough task.

Yeah the whole area had issues with “winter kill” or something. Courses wiped out but not a good look. PGA usually takes care of that with green fertilizing spray to make it look good.
