GOLF thread

Got my golf trip scheduled for this fall.

Thursday, arrive in Pinehurst and play #1
Friday, play Tobacco Road then hit The Cradle in the afternoon.
Saturday play The Legacy in the morning and a course TBD in the afternoon.
Sunday drive up to Charlotte for the final day of the Presidents Cup!

Should be a great time.

Interesting article. Does the Tour help or hurt itself by not releasing the names of all the players who applied to permission to play in the LIV event?

Should the Tour be more transparent and announce all suspensions and discipline in the name of transparency?

This doesn't affect any of the majors does it?

Masters-run by Augusta National-no connection to PGA Tour
US Open-run by USGA-no connection to PGA Tour
Open Championship-run by R*A-no connection to PGA Tour
PGA- run by PGA of America-no connection to PGA Tour

Don’t kid yourself. They are all connected together. They don’t share corporate governance but I guarantee the PGA Tour has talked to all of them about it.

The PGA screwed the pooch. When the kids that play golf see that they can make millions on the LIV tour by just showing up that tour will be successful. Kids in college now will join, play wherever and whenever they want and LIV will get the next stars just like what the AFL did to the NFL. These guys are contractors and make nothing unless they make a cut. Everything costs new players now. You have to pay to join the PGA, you have to pay $1000 to go to Q school, and then you have to pay entry fees to play on the KF tour. I think it’s $500 a tourney. Sure a few make the big bucks but the 500 or so good golfers who play in Asia and Europe see the problems with the PGA.

We will have to disagree on that. First the LIV can’t take everyone like you posit in your scenarios. Lots more factor into than just money. Endorsements are a huge part of the upper echelon of golfers. How many young golfers are willing to give that up for quick money? I’m sure some will.

But how many people are going to tune into watch a tournament with few established superstars, a few over the hill guys and a bunch of kids no one knows?

You have a point but todays players can make more money off the course than on. Not something 99% of NFL/AFL players could do in the 60s so they followed the quick money and who can blame them given the short career span of football players

Agree for the most part. Definitely on the choking. I love Colt on the radio. Gravy and the Sleaze is great but he is struggling to get his rhythm on TV. Hope he gets better.
There’s only so many jokes he can make about him not being good enough to play on tour anymore before it becomes hard to listen to. His podcast is great, but he’s hard for me to listen to as an analyst.

I just couldn't do it. Money isn't everything. If I can't make it on the PGA Tour, I'd simply become a club pro. No way I'd do LIV.

PGA response is bye bye, they have made it very clear without putting it on paper.

At this point, that and other presumptions are just that....presumptions. Outside of the rumor that DJ has joined, no one else has said they have...or have not, regardless of their entry into one event.

This should help clear up any questions for now which will probably be formally answered sooner than later by the powers to be.

Hilton Head golf- just booked a couple of rounds at Palmetto Hall courses for end of the month. Best courses for the money. They will be two weeks past their aeration time.

Checked Atlantic Dunes but they are aerating at that time.

Looking at Oyster Reef or one of the other Port Royal courses, never played the other two. Anyone have any thoughts on those two courses?

Good luck to Laney Frye and Jensen Castle of UK in the US Womens Open at Pine Needles.

You may want to look at Old South...it was excellent last Sep.

Hideki Matsuyama DQ'd for putting whiteout on his 3 wood.

Story here
That was an innocent mistake. No attempt to cheat since it was visible to everyone on the golf course and TV.

But the Rule is a good one.
Example: Back in the 50's/60's a trick some used (blush) was to put Vaseline on face of our "Woods". Reduced spin to keep it in the fairway.

I didn't learn it was against the rules until years after college. (Heard Lee Trevino talking about it).

(Never on an iron because reduced backspin)

Apparently he was warned about it in the past because he had it on his driver once. A spokesperson said he thought when he was told before that it only pertained to his driver and not the rest of the clubs.

You are right on everything you have said. But that doesn't make Hideki a cheater. (If he was cheating, it's the dumbest one ever since it was so obvious).

That's my only point. The PGA official told him to keep playing while Officials discussed if it was for certain a violation, etc.

On Tour there have been a few times that guys have miss-marked their ball intentionally. Or grounded their club moving the ball without calling a stroke. Etc.

I'm not saying he is a cheater as I don't think it would effect the ball flight but if he was told to not put it on his driver you would think he or his people would know it would apply to any club. I know there are a ton of rules but this seems like one that if you were warned about already you would know better. 🤷‍♂️
