GOLF thread

Unless I play from a forward tee, Valhalla is really not much fun for me to play, rough way too deep, too many long forced carries, stupid long uphill par 4s (#6 is maybe the hardest par 4 I have ever played). TBH, not a big fan of Nicklaus designed courses anyway. However, it is a great venue for pro tournaments though, can accommodate huge crowds.

Personally, while Olde Stone is also hard as hell, just seems more "fun" to play, the greens are wicked, first 4 holes or so are killers, but if you can get to number 5 relatively unscathed, it is not impossible to score on. At least IMO.

I made probably the best par of my life at #6 at Valhalla. Hit a drive off the toe and had 240 in - hit probably the best 3 hybrid I've ever hit and it caught the top of the bunker and stayed there, total fried egg. Blasted out to about 30 inches, total luck. I just took a super hard cut at it hoping to get it out. Still had to make a slick breaking putt to save it.

I'm a decently long hitter and tend to keep the ball in play, but you're right about the rough. I'm also not a great putter, and those glass greens will punish anything not struck really well and read properly.

Hey golf thread, your catpaw pro who cawood and bbdk are terrified to play here, this is pretty good. I’d love to A. try this and B. play a round with Tyrrell. Also, I’ve played all the aforementioned courses and nothing tops Idle Hour in terms of condition and also being the toughest sonuvabitch I’ve ever played. Shot even par there from the tips once and would consider it possibly my best round ever. Anyways, check this out…

IHCC is very tough, but one thing that makes it a little easier for average players (like me) versus some others on the list is that you can run the ball onto the front of many of the greens (not all), sort of old school like that. There are not very many holes I can think of at Valhalla (to name one) where you don't have to carry the ball to the green, just cannot get away with a miss there.

You are correct that IHCC is nearly always in top flight condition, of course, having a nearly unlimited budget helps. :D

Two early observations about the PGA tour in 2022

1. Is Phil finished on the regular tour? I know he pulled an all time miracle out of his backside in August at Kiawah, but has played like dog crap before the PGA and since and so far this year I am pretty sure has finished damn near last place at his two starts

2. Count me as shocked, SHOCKED that Dechambeau was seen grabbing his back this week on his way to a MC. Nobody can gain that much weight and swing that hard, and hit 1000 practice balls with the driver at 110% without hurting yourself.

OT: Danielle Kang pulled off a rare feat last week at the LPGA tourney of champions when she was 1st in GIR and 1st in total putts for the week (admittedly not against a full field). In his entire career, Tiger did it one time, and that was in 2007 and was also the last time it has happened on the PGA tour.

Anyone ever played Wasioto in Pineville? The girls 10 region tournament is there this year and I haven't played it in close to 30 years. Has anything changed there in a while?

Probably played it in the last 10 years but can't remember a whole lot about it. If I remember it was pretty open, but had a handful of troublesome holes that could get you in big trouble. Heck I was just down that way a couple of days ago.

Someone told me there were lots of sand traps and plenty of water hazards. I don't recall those but like I said it was 30 years ago that I played it. I am going to try to get my daughter over there to play this summer but it's about a 2 hour drive for us.

I think Phil still has some good golf left w/ the big boys, although he may need to pick his spots on courses he likes. I may be wrong, but I look for him to play well next week at Pebble. He is hitting it long, and surprisingly, it is his short game that killed him the last 2 days and resulted in a MC.

One player who may be done...Fowler. Hasn't won in 3 years, and coming off an awful season. The media love is old considering how he is playing.

Bryson...I doubt it is the swing, but he probably is well past the time to tone it back some. The novelty really didn't get him anything he couldn't have done otherwise.

There is an inaugural LPGA event this September in Cincy. I hope to go for at least one round.

Agree on Fowler, I never even check his scores, just a non factor on the tour for several years now.

Feel good story of the weekend for me was watching Luke List get his first PGA win yesterday at Torrey Pines. I followed him most of the weekend in the final group of the Barbasol last summer and could not believe he had never won a tournament . . . until I saw him putt, God, he was awful, but tee to green was the best in the field. Changed putting coaches and completely changed his putting outlook and finally got a win.

As an aside, last week's winner, Hudson Swafford, was also in the Barbasol field in 2021, but played terrible and missed the cut.

Good to see Day playing well again. Genuinely a good guy with a ton of talent. Could tell the late final round pressure reared some old swing tendencies that caused him some issues but if he can stay healthy he is going to be a problem this year. As for Fowler, seems to be a good guy but enough of all of the commercials. He is not a factor anymore and it’s comical he still gets as much pub as he gets. Still the most overrated player of the last 10-15 years.

I’m not sure Fowler loves the game enough to make it back. Hope he does though. Think he’s one of the best dudes out there.

Day said he feels better than he has in a long time, and it appears he has trimmed down some, which never hurts in golf.

I watched him as well....he can move the golf ball. Sheesh. He was trending well at the end of the year, and now a life changing event. 3 top 11's in his last 4 events.

Euro tour finishes the past 2 weeks were great. Hovland now has 4 wins since last June.

Rory's brain fart yesterday was ridiculously stupid.

The top 4 golfers in the world all acquired their first win in the last 5 years. #2 and 3 (Morikawa/Hovland) were in college just 3 yrs ago.

Jordan Spieth hit his drive within one foot of going over the cliff on the famous 8th hole at Pebble Beach today. Everyone thought he'd take a drop, but he decided to risk his life and play it. He ended up making a long putt for par.

Harold Varner w/ the best win you will see all year. So happy for him. Blew the lead on the back, and found himself 2 down w/ 2 to play to Bubba. Goes birdie....then OMG....

Always been a good player but did not know how to win. This could give him the needed confidence to go on a run sort of like what Kevin Na has done.

Field was better than Pebble but here's the breakdown;

3 top 10
3 11-20
5 21-30
9 31-50

There will be a better field at Waste Management Open. 15 of top 20 will be there.

Happy for Varner. Seems like a good dude. Was watching a Kisner podcast and he said he was going hunting with a bunch of golfers including Varner. So, he is one of the boys.

I am 1000 miles from a PGA golfer, but seems like playing in a 3 day pro am, or 4 day if you are in a group with one of the 25 amateurs that make the cut, would be a brutal slog, five hour rounds at a bare minimum. Then you would have to put up with the celebs that have to be "on" at all times, which would get on my absolute last nerve by the end of round no. 1. No wonder so many top players decided to play in the tournament Varner won.

But strangely enough, the Pebble Beach event has yet to invite me.

There were some serious appearance fees paid out for the Saudi event. It is all tied in to the new events that they are trying to get the big names to commit to with appearance fees, contracts, etc.

Wasioto IS a water hazard.

Have played 2 of those including Harbour Town. Greens are very small so you better bring your A iron game.

Mickelson must be in early stages of dementia. I can’t believe some of the stuff he has been spewing lately. I have lost all respect for the man. Talk about biting the hand that feeds you. Wow.

Played HT, AD, and OS last September. OS is a hidden gem...fun course. AD is better than HT in my opinion, especially in the price comparison, but HT gets the accolades. HT clubhouse is cool, and great restaurant where you can sit out and watch groups come in on #9.

OS has a huge gator that lives in the pond next to clubhouse.

Think Mickelson has gotten too comfortable with his social media persona. He must think he has built up enough goodwill with the fans to say and do what he does now. This Saudi thing can do a lot of damage to these guys reputations/legacies if they are not careful. PGA is not perfect but it has afforded them wealth and fame they would never have gotten anywhere else.

Good points. For example, Pebble used to be a prestigious event, and that trophy meant a lot. It now competes with appearance fees in Saudi. It is hard to knock those who played over there that don't have the financial security as the top tier, and Varner was a worthy champ, but it does leave a sour taste.

Never really cared for Phil, even when Tiger was dragging his nuts across his face week in and week out. Have grown to dislike him even more since he started sucking and “hitting bombs”/making gay commercials.
