If it where me, I would go to Calloway Preowned .com and buy a very good used set as opposed to a marginal new set. Just get the basics and add to your bag as you go. Calloway has some very forgiving irons for beginners and weekend warriors. Also, get a good putter, if you are going to learn the game, it is best to have quality equipment, even if it means buying a few years old used set. For a beginner, I would not worry about a 1-4 iron, they are tough clubs to hit accurate even if you have been playing a while. Myself, been playing for years, I am up there in age, so I do not carry anything iron below a 7. I find fairway woods are a lot more suitable for my swing speed, and they are actually better for a beginner because of the loft of the club helps get it airborne. first you must get the ball to travel, then after you do that, work on hitting it straight. After you have played a few round sand get some basics down, get a few lessons to help you learn a proper swing. Not saying get years of lessons, just 5 or 6 to help you help be able to play and not hack it around.
