GOLF thread

Don't know if any of you have been to Streamsong, but I would definitely recommend if you're considering it. We went two weeks ago and the courses were great. You have to walk this time of year and we used caddies, but that really just helped add to the experience. It's not remotely close to anything else so if you go you are basically on resort property from the time you arrive to the time you leave.

The only downside to the whole trip was that food and beverage service as a whole was very poor. The food was very, very good, but it took forever to get anything. For what everything costs service should be much better than they offer.

I guess it is really hard for guys at that level, who have to practice all day and do it almost every day, to keep it from turning into a job instead of a passion.
Having a few friends who played on tour I can tell you the grind is very real. They were journeyman and gave up their cards simply because they got tired of the grind while having to take care of a family. Both made a good living but nowhere near the $ JB has made. That said, they have told me several stories of successful guys on tour (players everyone here would know) who simply burn out and it does become all about the money because their family spends it as soon as it comes in the door because of the lavish lifestyles they are accustomed to.

Rick will win a major and have a Players and a major and double digit wins. Not bad when all said and done. I will take bets on the major with Rick as well if anyone wants action. Surely was overhyped but in the end it will be a fine career.

I wouldn’t bet against him winning a major just because there are lots of fluky major winners (although I don’t expect it). I think it’s more unlikely him winning 5 more times on tour to get to 10 PGA wins.

I don't doubt that. Matt Jones, who won yesterday, has won $15M in his career, but he is 40 and that was only his 2nd career win, and he has been a pro for 20 years, after expenses, taxes, caddy fees, etc., his net worth is probably not nearly what you would expect. But he did say he loves what he does. Jim Herman, who won the Barbasol in 2019, then at Greensboro last year, is 43, a career journeyman, no doubt is not a mega millionaire either. Both Herman and Jones either lost their PGA card, or nearly so, and fought back to stay on tour.

I think Phil M still loves to play golf as well, still enjoys the risk/reward, and the challenge. Other guys, it is just a job they happen to be good at, so they stick with it.

Yeah I know the family of a PGA player. They said after taxes, travel expenses, caddy fees, fees paid to their sports manager, etc. that you would be amazed at what their final take home is from a payout. I can't imagine how tough it has to be being a guy who grinds it out on a small regional tour.

I always find it funny to listen to golfers talk to their ball when they hit a shot or putt like "bite", "go", "break", etc. Do you talk to your golf ball?

What players have you liked then disliked or vice versa?

Sergio I liked him early against Tiger in 99, then hated him for years (Bethpage 02 flipping off fans, spitting in cup in Dubai, Tiger chicken comment), then I started liking him again and he wins Masters, now I’m back to meh on the guy. Weirdest flip flop ever on one guy.

Montgomery hated him for now I like him.

Westwood hated him for years now I like him.

Flipped on Bryson from love, to dislike, to now I’m back to liking him.

Looking at Callaway Mavrik irons. I am told it is a very forgiving club for a hack like me, high 80's, low 90's. Anyone have them? Thoughts?

I just purchased a set of Titleist AP-3's- 4-PW. Absolutely love them. Have only played with them about 5 rounds but have been hitting a lot more greens already.

Never had much to say about Na one way or the other, but the pre-Players NLU podcast interview really endeared me to him. Seeing this today made me like him even more. Can always appreciate someone who can laugh at a bad hole/round and not take himself so seriously all the time.

New driver time. Been at the range working in retooling my driver swing. Showing some progress.

But I was looking at my club and realized this will be the 8th golf season I’ve had it. It’s time to upgrade.

Gonna look at the Callaway Mavrik first. Heard lots of good things about it.

Got a new bag and new Bushnell Phantom to try out on the course today. Just need to purchase a new driver since this M2 I'm currently using has seen better days. Hate to spend a bunch of money but it can be justified because I will use that new driver during every round of golf I play and I will definitely get my money's worth (I wonder if my wife will buy that line).

Callaway Epic Flash, seems like every other person I know has one, and I can finally turn over a driver with a draw!! [some of the time]

Psychiatric help needed here.

I cannot for the life of me keep doubles and triples off my card.

Yesterday was typical, had 1 birdie, lots of pars, a few bogeys . . . and three doubles and a GD triple, shot 86, but was NINE OVER on four holes, 5 over on the other 14.

I am working hard to keep my driver in play, which has always been my achilles heel, but beyond trying to fixe the big miss off the tee, you guys have any other advice?

I had the same issue and did several playing lessons with my teaching pro. Really opened my eyes to how poor my scrambling ability was. I learned I did not have as many shots in my bag as I thought I had. If in the trees, can you hit a low hook or fade to get back into the fairway? Do you take the time without slowing play down to really look at your options and pick the best option that matches your skill level to manage the damage? I cannot tell you how many times I tried to be a hero taking shots I had no business taking and end up with the double or triple. My pro would place balls in trouble areas and ask me to pick shots and many times I picked shots I had no business taking and he would show me other options I never knew existed. I spent a ton of time on the range and course practicing all sorts of trouble shots and I started to notice I did not have as many bad holes.

The other thing (and you see it all the time on tour) is when you take your medicine and get it back into the fairway. Really good players have an ability to hit the green on that 3rd or 4th shot (whether par 4 or 5) and are putting to save par or at worst bogey. Mid handicappers tend to hit an average 3rd or 4th shot that leaves them off the green and having to use what is very likely an average short game that turns a bogey into a double or triple.

The final thing I would say you may tend to lose some rhythm and timing during the round. This could be possibly because you are now thinking more about score, maybe thinking too much about each shot, etc. and things go south quick. Then all of the sudden you are pressing and the blow up holes start popping up.

That is some good advice, and I swear I am trying to do just what you are saying, but frankly, some holes just have my number, I hit a terrible drive on a couple of the same holes almost every single damn time I play them.

Have thought about hitting a hybrid on a couple of them, but then you end up a LONG way back, and that creates other problems.
