Funny McGrady anecdote about Pitino/Kentucky/Celtics

Would not have worked out for T-Mac under Rick at UK not wanting to work hard. McGrady multiple times over the years admitted to not 'busting his ass' during his NBA career and relied on talent. Jeff Van Gundy said he put about 1/10th of the effort in practice as he did the games which certainly isn't surprising for some in the NBA. Polar opposite of Kobe's work ethic.

work effort can be a beautiful thing .I heard that our guys were calling coach welch after Canada trim asking to get back in the gym. Dome things just can't be taught. Its imprinted into your DNA.

Pitino's worst nightmare was everyone passing on Mercer until the 6th pick. That basically forced Pitino to show loyalty to Mercer, when it was clear McGrady had superior upside.

Imagine a core of Antoine Walker, Chauncey Billups, Tracy McGrady, and Paul Pierce.
Pitino still wouldn’t have won, his style of coaching was horrible for the pros just like Cal. They are made to be leaders of young men, not working men who make more than they do.
