Players first mantra no longer works. Anthony Edwards went to an SEC cellar team and was number one pick. Now the stigma on Cal is that his outdated offense holds the top college players back and that's why they become better NBA players. If they ran an efficient offense in college they would of excelled there instead of over playing their draft status..
But I don’t think this helps him - at all. It makes things look worse and it makes him look worse. It makes him look bad either way because by all accounts the NBA is going to rule him eligible so he’s either working to get a lottery pick locked player to come back or he’s trying to get a kid he recruited ruled ineligible for the draft. It looks terrible from all angles and is something other coaches can use against him.
Cal was ALL about the player until his seat is getting a little warm and now he wants them to come back. Remember it is, has been and will always be about him. When you are always choosing your next 5 star it is easy to send fhem to the league. Once that well dries up it all about the HC.

I disagree that CAL was the best PR guy in the game . I stopped listening to his tripe years ago . Even when he was successful he was still full of crap .

Right but Cal was great at doing HIS thing. It was a thing that rubbed everyone in college basketball the wrong way and that’s what he wanted. Everyone on earth has said for 25 years that he’s full of shit and he’s a huckster but he’s your huckster. He knew what to say, what message to put out, how to brand UK in a way that appealed to one and done talent and it worked as long as nobody else tried and for the first 5-7 years nobody really did. Then Duke got involved, then other schools dabbled, then the SEC started throwing football money at their basketball programs and he’s losing kids to crappy football schools with low level facilities.
Cal is still Cal and he’s still a top “brand”. The problem with Cal - at least in my opinion is that he’s NEVER been good enough to go toe to toe with similar rosters and beat other quality teams. His thing has always been dominate by force of talent and athleticism - and he doesn’t have that now and he’s unsure how to “brand” himself or his program. He’s playing transfers and kids he’d NEVER have played 7-8 years ago. Wheeler wouldn’t even have been offered a walk on spot for early era Cal. Jacob Toppin? CJ Frederick? These are all kids “the best version” of Cal would have never have recruited or played and now he’s trying to win with them - that ain’t what he’s best at.
I suspect most of us were here long before your God Cal . Probably longer than you too .

I think you are really undervaluing the www effect. When he was “influencing “ kids on their college choices and popular rappers were hanging out with the team , Cal was the man . Once www took interest in the nba and cal was left to his own devices, things have been different. Even with NIKE’s help , Duke wouldn’t have dominated us in recruiting like they have been had www stayed with cal .
First, let’s establish that Calipari took Sharpe/Washington at their words. I think that’s a fair assumption.
To believe that Calipari was totally caught off guard by this you would have to believe that:
1. Calipari, who is more in tune with the NBA than in any college coach in history, would not have heard the rumors of Washington telling the NBA that Sharpe was coming.
2. That even after hearing said rumors, Calipari confronted Washington with what he was hearing, even as the rumors persisted all season, and that Calipari was totally satisfied with what Washington was telling him.
I’m sorry, but that would make Calipari completely dumb and he is anything but that.
I just get tired of posters who bash Cal for what he says, for what he doesn't say, what he does and what he doesn't do. Fans have legit complaints about Cal. I get that. But, ripping him for breathing is over the top and we are already there.
Nope, I was skeptical of BCG from the beginning and yeah, I wanted Tubby gone. However, I didn't want him gone for a million reasons that were ridiculous. I felt he was never going to get back to a FF and he never did. I understand people being unhappy with Cal. I just want them to stop bashing Cal for EVERYTHING he does in life. That is bashing and is actually against the rules of this board.
Okay, since you brought up Tubby. Why is it that so many of those who defended Tubby even after he was gone and said Minny would be in a FF before Kentucky are the SAME ones who are now bashing Cal relentlessly?? No doubt WWW was massive for Cal and I don’t know what happened or where their relationship is now but it doesn’t seem to be a very close one considering everything being said about Wes pushing Wagner to Louisville.
Its absolutely no coincidence that as the Dukes, Gonzaga’s, Arkansas, Alabamas, Tennessees, Arizonas, UCLAs and Memphis’ and such have risen up the one and done recruiting rankings and Nike/WWW direct help has waned that Cal has experienced some of his worst seasons and a number of embarrassing losses.
I’ve been saying all off season I’m intrigued by UK more this year than any season in recent memory. He’s got the POY back, he’s coming off the worst loss of his career which followed the worst season of his career, he’s not bringing in absolute stud Freshman and based on what we know right now -Oscar,Toppin,Wallace,Wheeler - I don’t see him fixing a whole lot of this issues and complaints in regards to his offense. So he’s under more pressure than he’s EVER been under and the college basketball media is gonna straddle him with a top 5 preseason ranking a “revenge” season story. Is he gonna buckle under all the pressure? Can he win without overwhelming talent?
If Cal is so "players first", why would he actively recruit a top 10 pick back to UK, doesn't he want Sharpe's dream to be realized? Sounds like Cal is crumbling to the angry fanbase

I never thought Tubby would have Minny or any other team in the Final 4 after UK. He ran his course here. He was handed keys to Camelot and sunk it slowly. Cal came in with guns a blazing had us on top and is slowly starting to sink us. It’s the same deal with Cal once he leaves Camelot he wont ever have another team on top he has ran his course too! I just think being the basketball coach at UK is a hard and stressful job but I really and truly believe it has a shelf life of 10 years. Cal being past his 10 years is really starting to show and he just refuses to change with times.
