Warrior and Austin, Yes, I help edit the publications for AARP - the AARP Bulletin and the AARP Magazine. Those publications have pretty useful information on personal finance, health issues for people over 50, and some other stuff to entertain. For example, right now I'm editing an interview with Mel Brooks which is very interesting and a package of profiles of people who were impacted by Pearl Harbor, which includes an interview with one of two living survivors of the USS Arizona and also with a Japanese American in Hawaii when the attack occurred who then joined the US Army and fought in Europe. (You can read these stories and more in our upcoming December issue.) We have 40 million members.
That said, lots of people find AARP is too liberal for their tastes. For example, we strongly advocate for Social Security and Medicare to be strengthened as a life line for poorer old people. And we're for the provisions of Obamacare that guarantee older people not yet eligible for Medicare couldn't be kicked off their private insurance.
I don't know much about that other group, AMAC, except that it bills itself as a conservative alternative to AARP. I think it is tiny relative to AARP, but it may be growing.
It doesn't hurt my feelings when people criticize AARP for being too liberal, or if they find the other group more in tune with their values. I'm comfortable that what I'm doing is helping educate and inform tens of millions of people every month.
One point I will make -- Some people falsely circulate the story that AARP endorsed Obama or donated money to Democrats or lobbied for Democrats. That is totally false. Under federal law, AARP is a non-partisan, non-political organization, and would be severely sanctioned for any violation of that status. The only political stuff we do is voter education. For example, I interviewed both Trump and Obama last summer. Both were happy to talk with us. I asked them the same questions and we reprinted their answers verbatim. Our lawyers went over ever syllable to make sure the interviews were fair and balanced.
So, good luck deciding which group, if either, fits you.
