D-League

Yep, getting rid of them when the chance arrives.
We've done the same. A number of years ago we bought a new washer/dryer set. At the time our laundry room was also an exercise room. Had a huge treadmill in it that we hardly ever used (after it was new and we got tired of it). Only about 2 years old. Guys from the store were delivering the washer/dryer and I started talking to them. Nice guys. By the time they were done they were loading the treadmill on their truck. I gave it to one of them.

My brother-in-law's best friend has been a drummer in a band since he was 16 years old. The only job he's ever had and now he's 66 years old. They're still working and doing quite well. At least I think they are.
That is impressive to say the least.

Truthfully, I was never very good. However, I had a hell of a good time, and that was the problem.

I put a treadmill in my basement just before I found out my daughters were moving in or I'd have held off. The wife used it regularly as she liked to walk on it and watch her video's while walking. The daughters took it upon themselves to wear it out. Now that they have moved out I use it some and the wife will too soon. (Still clearing junk out of my used to be nice clean basement... That mutt ruined it for me and my wife for the longest time due to the hair.)

Almost back to normal. (if normal really exists.) I used to own a total gym and liked that but sold it before I moved to Korea. I would like to get one of those and one of the stationary ab exercisers. (I forgot the name of it but a friend had one and I know I'd use it if I had it.)

Johnny Cash actually had two careers. One in his early life and later as he had aged. I became a fan of his in 1956 when he first released I Walk The Line. I saved my money and bought his first record album, released in 1957. I was attracted to his music because I could relate to it. He was singing about my heritage and my people, Southern, dirt farmers and hard times. Times I may not have experienced but my grandparents and parents did and the stories on the front porch were those sung by Johnny Cash and other country singers of the time. But Johnny Cash was different because he could tell a story like none other.

My favorite Johnny Cash album. "Now There Was a Song"

I have 2 total gyms, one for the shop and one for the house just in case the wife and daughter decide to work out if I can convince them.

My shop is my workout area as well as other things:

Nice! My home gym is in the basement. Mostly free weights with a few machines. Been doing the home gym thing since I was 14. Unfortunately I screwed up my knee the weekend after Thanksgiving. Couldn't put any weight on it for 3 weeks. Got it x-rayed and all was fine but should of had an MRI. Arthritis most likely but could have been a tear. Still don't have confidence to do squats or deadlifts. May never happen but we'll see. Years of abuse.

If you were not around when this lady sang you missed out hearing the best. Nobody made a lonely soldier boy cry in his beer like this lady singing this song. I have seen fights break out just because somebody put a nickel in the jukebox and played it

A11 didn't make Johnny Paycheck very happy,

As Warrior teaches self defense, he knows this, but the largest strongest muscles in the body are in the center of your body. All movement should come from your center. As an old fart still working 70 plus hours a week with most of it physical, I try to remember this. They say if you are truly working from the center, you could be in the process of sitting down and if someone jerked the chair out from under you, you should not fall.

Nice setup. My physicality stopped in High School. I boxed all four years and was a decent boxer. (The last two years I took minimal fights and was mostly a tune-up fighter. I did it because I enjoyed it.) The issue I had was I boxed guys with near a one foot reach advantage. Had my nose broke four different times. I never lost a fight though it looked like I lost plenty. I punched like a mule kicked. If I got in a few good body shots I crumpled people. I could take a punch too. Who I fought couldn't take my punches. My hand-eye coordination allowed me to land well. (Never had no altercations in the Military.)

I also want to get one of those punching dummies as that is a serious workout with minimal output. Even though I won fights I was nothing more than a punching dummy. I was as good as I was going to get. I did enjoy it though...

I haven't had an altercation since though I came close a time or two. The other person always seemed to have better sense than I had and of course the Lord looked out for me too.

I am going to have to start something as I want to get under 200 and the only way is to up my activity. Thanks for the ideals!

Speaking of Johnny Cash telling a story, this is one of my favorites.

Yeah, my favorite kick is the spinning back kick or the defensive back kick sometimes known as the mule kick. You can generate a lot of power with the back kick. It comes from the glut and that being the largest muscle makes it powerful. I have put a couple of people on the floor with that one during sparring sessions. I once sparred a guy who was harassing my wife in class a lot when she was taking karate. He was a black belt who picked on her while training her and what she thought was a little too rough. He was a retired marine about my size (a little bigger) who I think liked her because he was always where she was as in class. She was not there the day he and I were sparring and the guy controlling the session called for break, as I lowered my hands, he hit me twice in the face. I ask why he did that and he apologized and said he was a little frustrated because he was having a hard time getting his strikes and kicks in and I was landing mine. Well, that set the stage and when the command to fight again was issued he decided to get more aggressive and came in quickly to try and bum rush me so, I used a defensive back kick right to the gut. He went down, and the session was over. I said: Next time, don't hit me after the break.

I have a streak too. Understand completely.

I had my nose broke twice but never while sparring. Once, I was head butted by a soldier of mine during a basketball game (on purpose) which caused a fight that ended the game and the second time was about a month later from another soldier of mine (My assistant team chief) who elbowed me in the nose accidentally. It actually reset my nose closer to the original look.

We had a Drill Sergeant play football with us at the end of Basic Training. He said if anyone tackled him, they would get grass drills. Needless to say, he scored anytime he got the ball.

As part of our police training, we had physical armed restraint training (12 days at 8 hours a day). We were all paired off in twos with several instructors roaming among us. I was goofing off. The next thing I knew, an instructor had me around the neck while laying on his back with my feet up in the air. I reckon he could have broken my neck if he wanted to. I should have stayed with it after school and learned more, but I did not.

We used to play what was called Paddocks football once a year in an area that had metal railings in the paddocks of the half section at FT Sill. The DPTM (Directorate of Plans Training and Mobility) section vs the Half Section. Each team would be at one end and throw the ball to the other team and have to climb these railings until we met then, the tackling began. The troughs there were made of concrete and sometimes we would run in to them. Needless to say, there were some injuries and very sore soldiers the next day. That is why it was only once a year.

I don't know if this is considered classic country, but it is one of my all-time favorites—Jessie Winchester's Mississippi You're on My Mind.

The first time I heard it was by a Navy friend of mine. I swear he has a voice that would rival James Taylor. However, he has no confidence on stage and cannot remember lyrics to save his soul.

As with most of my posts, there is more to the story. But I have droned on long enough for the day. :)

LOL yeah, one of the guys I used to train with called me the wolverine because while sparring I get real aggressive. I have since toned it down a lot (too old now) and just teach my students how to turn anger into intensity.

When I was drinking some I was the nicest person you'd want to be around (Still am but rarely if ever get past two or three beers.) I was more aggressive sober than I ever was drinking. I used to party a lot before and while in the military I ran into a few that wanted to fight when they were drunk or drinking heavy. I always turned them down even backed away from fighting but the next day I was in their face. I only had to do that once to whoever was a fighter when they were drinking. They seemed to tame down a lot the next time we were together drinking.

"Play Rocky Top" is a running joke with the older musicians in the Bracken, Mason, Fleming County area.... Well, they (I do not really consider myself a musician) were young when it started. But YEP!

There are quite a few songs in what I call the 4000 Club. Once you hear or play a song 4000 times, it loses its luster.

  • Wipe Out
  • Old Time Rock and Roll
  • MUSTANG FREAKING SALLY!!!!!!!!
  • Rocky Top
  • Sweet Home
  • Friends in Low Places

Much like the road, the list goes on forever.
My banjo joke is that....by the time I have worked on a song to get it right my wife is about ready for Divorce Court.........seems like I am OC and once I start learning a song it becomes an obsession.......I will even get up in the middle of the night and put a damper on the strings to practice......and your are absolutely correct.........once I have learned a tune I am about sick of it......
I know someone whose dad hitchhiked home from Fort Benning to Chicago many a time in the late 50s or early 60s. I believe they may have done so from Fort Irwin or somewhere out in California as well, but know they drove back and forth from out there a few times. Can't recall for sure
I was going to hitch hike to my aunt's place in Freemont CA.....I was going to surprise her......I was planning on leaving after graduation........about three weeks before I was going to head out they showed up at grandpaw's house in a station wagon with a U/Haul hooked up to it.......they have went bust and instead of saying anything to anyone they headed this way......

I know the song. But never played it. I can imagine.
The bass run will make your fingers numb......kind of like the lead riff in Thunderstruck or maybe Snow......same few notes played continuously.....so simple that sometimes you see see a pretty lady in the crowd and maybe lose focus....Not that I have ever done this...... 🙄

I want to meet you awf. You are a fine person with wit.
Don't you live in Smith's Grove.......I will probably be training my pigeons there the week before the 365 mile race......probably a couple of times......maybe I could buy your lunch.......I hadn't been down that way in 25 yrs or more and I didn't even know that end of I-65.............

Good morning from ATX. Currently 68°F and cloudy. Today's high may top out at 88°F.

Just got back. Longest trip yet. Around MM 87 on I-30 westbound in Arkansas, two lanes changed into one. 7-mile backup to Arkadephia exit. Nearly a 2 hour delay. Everybody is happy I'm back. I'll turn in the rental car soon.

Wishing happiness and health for all our fellow D-League members.

I hitched hiked with my sister once when she was 7 and I was 6. We came home from school and there was a note from our mother stating that our other two brothers (younger) were at our aunts in J-town and she would pick them up after work and come home then. My sister was afraid because we lived on Fisher street in the middle of Louisville and a lot of things bad happened around there so, she convinced me to hitch hike with her to my aunts house. We were lucky because we got about a mile or so out before an older couple picked us up and was worried about us and went out of their way to take us to J-town. Needless to say, when our mother got to my aunts we got disciplined. Father had left us about that time so...

Morning legionnaires!

Temperatures reaching high 70's to low 80's all week and it seems as if our air conditioner is not working. Set thermostat at 68° last night and never got down past 75°. According to the guy who owned this house before me, this unit was put in and has been here since the house was built (2003) so, it is probably time for a new one. Will see if it cools any today and if not, will call some one to take a look.

Felt a little sore all day yesterday from playing the tournament Saturday and my calves are still a little sore but, all things considered, no worse for wear. God has blessed me with good enough health to continue.

Grass cutting on tap for today with rain possible for the next few days.

Austin, glad you made it back safely. Will probably be making a trip back home to around Louisville/E-town area myself June or July time frame. Did it last year and my daughter has hinted she would like to go again this year. She enjoyed the Mammoth Cave visit since it was her first and would like to see more.

Good morning D, going to be beautiful over the next couple days!!! I am going to be metal detecting for the next couple days, got a house my friend is going to rent out, going to go there today, then tomorrow I am going to try to go to a place where we use to play ball when we were growing up, large field!!!

About detecting, we went to eat with a couple that we use to go to church with, but he was called as a full time pastor at another church, but we were talking and my friend ask if I had been or found anything lately, then out of nowhere his wife says, I wish you could find my tennis bracelet I lost 18 years ago that my husband gave me when our first daughter was born, the challenge is on!!!!!!! Made plans to go there when school is out to hunt for it. I found that ring that had been missing for 18 years, so maybe I can find this bracelet! If I find it I am not going to let her know and give it to her husband so he can surprise her with it some day!!!

Thanks Bert for posting the picture of the MILITARY STARS I made, I always ask if they want a cross on them.

ATX glad you had safe travels!!!!

I hope the D has a great day and Prayers!!!!

Good morning all... I am at the DC VA in my car. I will go in shortly for my second inarculation. I guess I will be safe(r) at that point until the booster, booster, booster whatever.

Had my Gala apple and sipping on coffee. Good so far...

Oh, God bless all of your days today. God will make a way where there seems to be no way. Be patient, keep your eyes on him. You will be fine and thrive...

God Bless you all....

Your soon to be inarculated (Hey, if it's good for Barney...) Compadre...

I like Rep John Randolph of Virginia. I wish 20 million people had listened to the wisdom out of his mouth. Especially Disney and Mickey Mouse. My State Representative told me once he would like a sign at the state line. "Welcome, spend all of your money and go home We are full. FLORIDA IS NOT FOR EVERYBODY Representative John Randolph spoke the truth.

Good morning!

Austin, glad to hear you made it home OK. How many miles did you end up doing?

Supposed to pick up my golf clubs today. Hope they come through.

Back to sleep...
Give me your old ones so that when I get old enough to play golf it won't cost me anything. ;) I have some old army buddies trying to get me to play golf with them. One has even offered his old set to me to keep until I see if I like the game or not. Maybe one day.

Good Monday Morning D

We are thankful Austin made it back safe to Texas. That was quite a road trip. We are in store for a nice day. It is currently a cool, for us, 59° and the wind is ENE at 4 mph. Our high will be 84° at 3:00 this afternoon winds will be NE at 7 mph and the humidity 46%. We will have plenty of sunshine that will give us a UV Index of 9 of 10.

Someone filed suit over our new Anti-Riot Law. We knew that was coming but we are not flinching. Get in the street and get run over. Threaten life and property and face the consequences. Don't do any of that and you may live a long life.

I am ready to face the day and trust all are well and if not you are healing fast.

My Aunt and Uncle lived on Fisher......the first house on the left after you turn off Ellison Av........I don't know if my cousin still lives there or not....I haven't seen him in 30 years....
