D-League

Today is the last day you can apply to be a Weeki Wachee Mermaid. They have 4 positions open and have 350-400 applicants each year.. They have a total of 40 full staff. "Mermaids require eight to twelve months of training before they are able to perform in the underwater theater. They must learn each position: Control Booth/Director, Swimmer (multiple roles), Host/Hostess, and Safety Person (in the water), rotating as needed. The position is approximately 30 hours a week. Summer weeks can add an extra shift"

You have to have excellent character and most all of them are professionals with college degrees. .About three-fourths of the applicants are eliminated through the water testing and personal interviews. The water test consists of swimming 400 yards against the current, treading water for fifteen minutes, trying to perform three underwater ballet moves after seeing them once, and being able to hold your breath underwater for thirty seconds. All of this in cold spring water with a year round water temperature of 72 ° The spring produces 150 million gallons of water a day. Treading water 20 feet below the surface with that amount of pressure pushing on you means you better be an athlete.

Any D-Leaguers want to try out?

That would NOT be catch and release!!!!!!

Wonder how many Mantle and Maris cards we destroyed?!
I only have one Mickey Mantle card left and once upon a time I had 1,000's of Topps baseball card and every single one of Mickey Mantle. Then I left home and they all disappeared. The only reason I saved Mickey Mantle was because I had it in an album that Topps put out each year to hold all of your cards. All the rest of my cards were in cigar boxes.

Would it be possible to shadow a mermaid first? Maybe overnight? Specifically the one in this picture? Asking for a friend. TIA

Walked Mrs. M out to the car this morning seeing her off to work, she asked me what I was going to do today, I told her nothing today is my day off!!!! I gave her a stupid grin and she gave me that you shouldn't have said that look! I am going to have to learn to just keep my mouth shut one of these days!
RIG - Retirement is Great!!!!

I remember them well Don. In fact when they came on the scene they were compared to Dizzy and Paul (Daffy) Dean who were outstanding pitchers for the Cardinals in the 1930's. The brothers combined for 49 wins. Dizzy had 30 and "Daffy" 19.

Sure liked Dizzy and Pee Wee Reese as announcers. Dizzy loved his Falstaff right on the air. Slud in to second he would say. Gotta work. FCC/.

I liked them, too. I still have an autographed baseball signed by PeeWee. It was signed by all the players of the Louisville Colonels, back when they were they were a farm team of Pittsburgh. As I recall, he played for them in 1938 and then got traded and moved up to Brooklyn, in the bigs in 1940. The Colonels went from being a farm team of Pittsburgh in 38 to then being in the Red Sox farm system the next year. PeeWee had a bowling alley in Louisville, after he retired. I remember my Dad bowled in a league there, when I was a kid, back in the 60's.

This is a night scene of my (and Austin's) hometown, Middlesboro. The cross on a mountain side is perfectly aligned with the main street in town. It has been there for as long as I can remember. It is privately maintained.

Yes, view of the cross from Cumberland Ave.

Gentleman responsible was named Harrison Mayes, who passed away in 1986 at age 88. Apparently someone maintains the cross. It was still there when I returned last November.

Going through some odds and ends today and found this in one of my safes. If you are from the South you may have heard of Sidney Lanier. There is a big lake named after him North of Atlanta and many other things as well. This is an 8 cent stamp and envelope you could buy at the U.S.. Post Office. I got this one on the first day of issue in Macon, GA. May 3, 1972.

My vintage portable phonograph bit the dust several months ago. I didn't think I'd replace it because I probably only have 50 or so 78 rpm records but some are really rare. If I had the space for a horn phonograph I might consider it but they're expensive as hell for a good one. Instead I placed a bid on one of these.

I shot craps for 24 hours one time.

Rolled 17 times in a row one time in Vegas. Won just under $1500 and dude told me I could have easily won $200,000.

My father was also in a league there in the 60's. Do you remember Lum's?

If he does it will be enough bass for all of us to share. We can join him for a fish fry

I just fried up a big mess of crappie. Used some Slap Yo Mama cajun breading on it. It was too much for one person, but I ate it all anyway. Put some sriracha, wasabi horseradish, cocktail sauce, and tarter sauce on my plate for dipping.

Played golf tonight. Figured some things out. I've been handcuffing myself which causes me to block shots off to the right. In an effort to fight that, I was casting the club and coming from outside to in. A total mess.
