CPAP users?

Good luck, man. I hope it works out for you. Be sure to download the DreamMapper app that works with the Dreamstation so that you can see how much time you're wearing your mask, apnea events, leaks, etc. When I first started getting used to it, I would wake up to find my mask on the floor beside the bed. Apparently, I would rip it off in the middle of the night. At first I could only wear it for about 3-4 hours per night, but after a couple of weeks I was wearing it all night long. It's weird at first, but you'll get used to it.

And yes, my kids called me Daddy Vader for a while.

I down loaded that app but they wanted a lot more info than I wanted to give. Just me personally but they had no need to have that much info. Looked like a good app though.

A lady here at work got one in November and was telling me yesterday that she is still struggling with it. She said she wakes up with it in the floor all the time.

I bet it was the pressure too high. I did the same thing. I try upping the pressure sometimes and will still rip it off if I have it too high.

My wife is in need of a sleep study if her doctor will ever get back in town to give the referral. For the dufus brigade, my wife is about 5'2" and weighs 120 to 125. Never been heavier except when she had our babies.

So the first night I averaged 1.6 AHI episodes per hour and slept pretty well considering I had that mask strapped to my head. The second night I didn't sleep as well, was more restless and my AHI was around 9 per hour. Last night I did sleep a little better but my AHI was higher again at 11.5 per hour. The past 2 nights, with the higher AHI, was due mostly to hypopnea episodes according to the Dreammapper app.

I really don't understand why the first night was so good but the last 2 have been higher than when I had the test done unless it's just adjusting to the machine. Anyone else run into this when you started? I am not sure if it's normal.

No doctor but your body has to adjust.

My DreamStation Bi-Pap makes a bit of a high pitched whining noise between breaths and it is driving me crazy the past few nights. My wife says it isn't bothering her at all.

Anyone else have this problem or is yours super quiet?

I called my Dr. and he said to contact my supplier. I just wondered if everyone else's is quiet.

My machine is so quiet you can't hear it at all. The only noise is the air coming from the mask. It seems really loud to me but my wife says it isn't loud to her. Of course she is probably comparing it to my snoring. :joy:

Did you try tightening your mask? Only time mine makes a noise is if air is getting out if the seal on my face is not good. Otherwise it’s very quiet

Did you notice a big difference in your numbers between the first week and after a couple of months in?

When I started in early 2000 I never had access to the numbers I have seen you and others use. My machine had an SD card and the techs at the VA never went over those. I will lookup my records to see what has been entered. Just not sure. I did dig up my initial study document. I will look that over and see if I can find any new data to compare to now.

Mine has mostly been how I feel and knowing what I am preventing. Give me a couple days.

Pressure may be too high and one or both of the filters may be clogged or not properly inserted. Also check the silicone gasket on the water container and the machine to be sure they are not crimped in some way.

Don't go to that trouble brother. I appreciate your input to this point. :fistbump:

I've had this happen before after disconnecting and cleaning everything earlier in the day. I found out that when I was pushing a brush into the hole where my mask connects to the tube, I was pushing up some little plastic flapper thing (technical term) and it was getting stuck in the open position. It made a loud whining sound because there was too much air pushing through the mask in between breaths. Once I figured it out and made sure to check the flapper after cleaning, it hasn't happened again.

Not sure if it's the same problem you are having, but it might help.

Is the app showing you any leaking at night? My AHI goes up if there's a leak, but that's pretty high for having worn the mask all night. I've never had mine go higher than 5 since I've been using it. I would definitely call your doctor. They might need to up your pressure. Hypopnea episodes aren't as severe as obstructive ones because I think the airway isn't completely blocked but it would be equivalent of vacuuming with something stuck in the hose. It still sucks, just not as well. Obstructive episodes are like turning the vacuum completely off.

It shows 100% and I don't feel like I was having any leaking issues. I have a follow up visit in about 4 or 5 weeks. I am not sure if I need to wait and see if I can adjust to it and those numbers come down or contact them. It is on the mild side either way.

If it were me and it wasn't affecting my ability to get a decent night's sleep, I'd probably let it ride for a few weeks until the appointment. If it was uncomfortable or causing me to not wear my mask, I'd probably call them.

So for the 4th night in a row my AHI number was in the 12 range up from the 8.9 when I had the sleep study. I am not sure why it's higher than without the machine. Maybe it's just me getting used to the machine and breathing with it but I seem to wake up sometimes and it's like I am holding my breathe if that makes any sense.

I don't think it would hurt to call your doctor and ask about this. Even in the beginning when they were dialing in my pressure, I never saw my AHI go above 5. I don't think this is normal.

I actually had to get a new Dreamstation after the first month because it would turn off randomly in the middle of the night. I guess I had a lemon, so they replaced it, and it's been fine since. Not sure if it's a problem with your machine, pressure, mask, or even the app, but I would call and ask some questions if it were me.

I go with the full face mask because allergies or a cold will make you breathe through your mouth and then the nose mask becomes useless... and if you have a full facemask, make sure you are shaved around the area or your hair will cause leaks.. also wash the mask every day because facial oils weakens the plastic ...

The app is showing the mask is 99-100% as far as the seal.

I called my doctor and they said I would need to bring the card in so they could take a look and see if something is set incorrectly. She said it shouldn't be higher than without the mask and that the 1.2 AHI events per hour should be what it is. They are just not sure, without seeing it, why the events have increased.

Mine has a built in modem that can be downloaded by my doctor. When I go in for a visit they already have my stats. Make sure yours doesn’t have a modem. I have a dreamstation.

This one doesn't have the modem. I am tempted to get one to install in it though.

I just took it in and they gave me a new one. It wasn't super loud, but it was enough to annoy the shit out of me and keep me from getting a good night's sleep.

Fingers crossed.

I use a full face mask with the tube connecting on top of my head. Only problem is when I sleep on my side sometimes I pinch one side. But the tubing completely stays out of the way
Ed it really isn't pinching the air off when you sleep on your side, the air still goes through and also through the other side of the mask. Hope this helps

Yeah you are right it does go through the other side. But I seem to do better when both sides flow with air.

Maybe it was getting adjusted to the machine because my AHI number has steadily decreased. Last night it was only 3.7 events per hour according to the app. However, I did wake up around 3:30 and couldn't go back to sleep until around 5:00 so that may have skewed the total events. I do think I may order a nasal pillow mask to try out. If I like it I may use it all the time and only use the full face mask if I am really stuffy and breathing from my mouth.

I bought one and tried it a few nights, but my mouth would fall open and lose seal waking me up, I bought a chin strap and tried that for a few nights, same problem, so I just went back to the full face, however switched to the resumed f20 with the memory foam. It is working great.

I use the Dream wear nasal pillow and sometimes switch to the resmed airfit n30i both are about the same in comfort. the airfit has the stretch part which really helps getting comfortable when side sleeping. the 3.7 ahi also includes if you are awake and turn or change position the machine detects if you hold your breath as you change also. But even 3.7in a 5 hour sleep is still pretty good.

It may sound silly but I was really heisitant to try the nasal pillows but I tried them at the medical supply office and tested them for a few minutes and have used them ever since.

I don’t feel as weighed down as the full mask did.

Same here. I am a mouth breather, so it would sound like a leaf blower in the middle of the night when my mouth fell open and broke the seal. I tried the chinstrap for one night, but it felt like a medieval torture device, so I went to the Amara View full face mask and haven't turned back.

Do you feel any better in the morning? More rested?

So my AHI numbers have came down. Most nights it is below 5 events per hour with an occasional night of 7-8. I purchased another mask to try, since cpap.com offers free returns on most of their mask, and I really like it. It's the Airfit P30i nasal pillow mask. I don't feel as confined. The only problem is I woke up several times with my mouth open and the sound of a hurricane coming out. :joy:

To make matters worse I ordered a chinstrap from Amazon that was rated really high but it must have been employees giving it the ratings because it was big enough to fit a person 10-11 or younger. Do any of you use a chinstrap and if so which brand/kind or where do you purchase them?
