CI Wrestling Thread #56

Some of WWE's releases were bizarre to me but at the same time, I've thought they had way too big of a roster and wasted money. Like five years ago, Big Show was still getting a million a year. Natalya gets $300K a year. You save the company quite a bit just getting rid of people who don't move the needle at all.

Ziggler and Kevin Owens get $2M a year. You telling me you can't replace one of them and not miss a beat while saving money (I say that as someone who thinks Ziggler is the most underrated and wasted talent WWE has probably ever had)?
It makes perfect sense from the business side of things for some of them, but just weird times to see a company most regard as stable to purge so many.

One would think Kross, Scarlett, Keith Lee, Ember Moon, and maybe Mia Yim get looks from AEW. It may just be me, but part of the issue with wrestling in general is that with the exception of finishers, signatures, and very few performers, everyone does a lot of the same stuff. In it's heydey you had technical guys, high flyers, bruisers, brawlers, and hardcore guys. The athleticism of performers now is amazing, but part of the appeal is the clash of styles and when you can cut and paste the performers and watch the same match on repeat on the same show, it tends to lose it's appeal.

I hope they don’t take Kross and Scarlett. They’re already screwing around with one big, talented act in Brian Cage. Not sure they’d do Kross justice.

Eeehhh… Miro is getting a good push. I wouldn’t be shocked if he’s the first one to beat BD.

Nia legitimately has hurt people in the ring for years and never got fired. But don’t get this pointless jab and she gets canned?
👌
Honestly, she’s embarrassment to wrestling. Wrestlers will tell you one of the first rules is protect your opponent.

I don’t feel any remorse for her firing

Pretty sure Sasha is anti vax so it makes me hesitant to believe the vaccine was the main reason for anyone's release.

here is what she said

I usually keep my personal life private, but yesterday's reports leave me with no option but to clarify matters. I recently took a short leave of absence from WWE for a mental health break. I've been working through so much -- more than I can share -- and so I took some time, with the full support of the company, to take care of myself.

Earlier this week, after WWE sent me my schedule to return to the ring for the November 15 show, I asked for an extension to my mental health break, feeling that I needed more time, and hoping I would have the ongoing support of the company I have given my all to for the past 7 years. I did not receive a response. The next I heard, I was being released. My vaccination status was never mentioned. I wasn't given any choices or options.

It breaks my heart to be so abruptly let go, without consultation, when dealing with so much privately. I loved my career at WWE, I love the men and women I worked with, and I am going to need time to process this huge loss. I appreciate those people who have shown understanding and compassion during an incredibly difficult time.

Could be part but was just quoting what was said above

Sasha could be in the untouchable category - she took a leave after they dropped the tag belts to the iconics and Vince said do whatever you need to do and come back whenever

Time and time again, it is shown that the talent can do a better job at creating their character than WWE can.

The only reason the attitude happened is because of that. I don't think Wrestlemania 17 would have worked well with Chilly McFreeze vs. The blue chipper Rocky Maivia in the main event. Might have sold out Louisville Gardens

I know I've hated to defer to a boss that I knew was wrong or had a worse idea creatively. I know it has to kill wrestlers to have to do stuff they know sucks and they don't want to do especially when your livelihood really relies on said character.

Yep. That's been said time and time again. Guys have been handcuffed on promos and everything is super corporate.

Nia is a shit wrestler, we all agree on that. We all also believe the only reason she was employed was because of who her family was. With all that said... if she was dealing with depression and mental illnesses and WWE just cut her, that's pretty messed up. Take it from someone who has had the gun to their head before, people can't do it alone. They need a support system and help through the struggles. This is not it. I'm not one of those bleeding hearts on Twitter claiming, "Oh that's so horrible! These are human beings!" They're contracted employee's and know damn well their contracts can be yanked at any time. But to do it during a struggle like this... now I have an issue.

WWE seems like high school at times. Petty crap, vendettas, and just ruthlessness.

But hey, that’s not too far off from a lot of corporations.

Based on my searches looks like the Raw and the Smackdown roster have the same number of wrestlers. Raw is a 3 hour show and Smackdown is 2 hours so I wonder if they may be reducing Raw to 2 hours for the upcoming season. Lots of low to mid card talent on the Raw roster.

The problem with mental illness is that you can show it on a test. I have no idea what is going on with Nia Jax but Ben Simmons is also claiming it right now and I think it's an absolute lie. He bitched and complained all off season trying to get traded and once the season starts, he needs time off for mental rest and is refusing help from his employer.

Eddie is one of the best on the mic. You knew those two were gonna rock it tonight. Give me months of story telling like that with Punk! That only took one night, but the story telling has to get better.

WWE fired their CFO yesterday. After she conducted the earnings call yesterday. The company made $250m last quarter. Replacing her with an M&A specialist. WWE practically has a For Sale sign sitting atop their logo.

Does WWE even realize how tarnished the brand is by releasing their talent during the pandemic amid record profits??? They might have shaved some millions off their payroll--but IMO it has taken hundreds of millions off their sale value.

Random quote I read earlier that I just had to repeat, simple yet profound and so very, very true:

Maybe you cannot push everybody. But you should build every one.

Kenta beat Tanahashi for the IWGP US title.

And New Day is horrible. I never liked their act. Still don’t.

Absolutely prepping for a sale.

We can dream right???

Let her try it and see how it goes. I’d watch.

Nia Jax has bigger things to worry about than her mental health. Perhaps her robust waist line and the crippling pressure her knees and ankles are under to keep her upright and steady.
