CI Wrestling Thread #56

I remember Cornette telling the story of the family who had the photo of Ricky and Robert on the wall next to Jesus. We are what we are in Eastern KY. Hillbilly isn't taken as derogatory to most around here despite it's negative stereotype. I've listened to a lot of Jericho's podcasts and although most of the stories of his time in Eastern KY with SMW feature the typical rubes or "hillbillies", he seems to have a soft spot for the area. I've not heard him on KSR today but plan on listening on the way home from work.

Keith Lee finally talked about why he was gone for so long and indeed it was COVID and related issues.
Definitely worth a watch.

Jericho saying hillbillies wasn't that big of a deal because he was emphasizing that these were people that don't get out much and were literally coming down from the hills.

Calling them inbred was tough though.

Ratings time:

NXT was up considerably airing back on USA with 751,000 and a .19 in the demo.
Most viewers since May 4th.

Dynamite was down with 979,000 viewers and a .35 in the demo.

MTV's The Challenge was the number one show with a .38

  1. CM Punk has dedicated time and energy to his comeback to pro wrestling, Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful Select reported, not only training for his upcoming appearance on Starz's Heels, but also on his own.
"Fightful has been able to speak with some wrestlers and cast members who have worked with him over the past six months, who had very promising things to say about the former WWE world champion," he wrote. "One source said that CM Punk looked 'completely healthy,' especially as compared to the tail end of his WWE run."
A second and third source suggested Punk may have been training on his own in private and that he "was working so well in the ring it was as if he'd never left."

Is that when HHH called him skinny fat?

My wife got me the book, it's pretty interesting. He did make a few comments about eastern Kentucky hillbillies that probably won't endear him to some folks. The story about Jesus and the Rock and Roll Express was pretty good.
Yea lol I cringed when he kept saying it but you can tell he has a soft spot for Kentucky. I really hope he doesn’t catch any criticism over it. Chris seems like a good dude.

Well tonight's the debut of Rampage, here's what's scheduled.

AEW & Impact Wrestling Champion Kenny Omega will defend the Impact Wrestling Championship vs. Christian Cage, the first time they have ever faced off.

AEW TNT Champion Miro vs. Fuego Del Sol vs Miro.

AEW Women's Champion Dr. Britt Baker vs. Red Velvet.

Not a surprise…

Following his release from WWE, it reportedly may be a foregone conclusion that WWE Hall of Famer Ric Flair is poised to sign with All Elite Wrestling.

According to Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter (h/t WrestlingInc.com's Marc Middleton), Flair signing with AEW is believed to be a "lock" whenever his WWE non-compete clause expires.

Just announced WWE is coming to Rupp for a house/supershow on Sunday October 3rd.

Tickets go on sale next Friday.

Im looking forward to it.

I hope they use their secondary TV to further develop angles so fans won’t have to watch YouTube shows to keep up.

This is just odd booking to me. Do you put Christian over Omega? You kind of have to because if Christian loses twice in a row to omega that’s a pretty solid burial for a little bit. Could start a new angle for a heel turn though. Also omega has Andrade tomorrow night for AAAmania and that’s another one Omega could lose to get the mega ultra super duper belt back to AAA.

I’m guessing Christian almost wins the Impact title but shenanigans result in a DQ or no contest. Although, Christian is a former Impact champ, so there’s a built in story there as well. I’m curious as to how this match will be booked.

With it being scheduled as the opener, I don’t anticipate a title change, but I guess they could switch a title to make Rampage appear to be meaningful for casual fans.

Rampage Review:

Omega v. Christian: Top-notch. Christian may be doing some of his finest in-ring work now at 50. And he has history with Impact, and can "bring it back" for them, which means more forbidden door crossovers. Plus a belt changes hands in the very first match on the very first Rampage!

Miro vs. Fuego: We all knew this was going to be a squash, but they let Fuego get a little surprise offense in before the inevitable happened. And Fuego is now All Elite, so a feel-good ending.

(Aside: Miro vs. Moxley needs to be a PPV angle in the next 6 months.)

Britt vs. Velvet: Hometown heel girl makes good, beats the young up-and-comer face who gets heat in front of Britt's hometown crowd. Execution was pretty meh, not much to get excited about. Live crowd goes home happy, TV crowd shrugs shoulders.

And that's a wrap.

(Aside: Commentary: Jericho needs to speak, not scream. The beginning intro sucked @ss because no one seemed to know who was announcing what, but once they settled into the matches they did seem to find a good flow where everybody contributed. Also, Jericho needs to retire before becoming a color commentator, because he was being a heel announcer but that doesn't work if you are a face wrestler.)

I think the four man booth was a little too much and yeah Jericho was being more of a heel announcer. Fozzy is supposed to be touring soon so I wonder if he will be around for many of the shows in the fall.

Omega is supposed to wrestle Andrade tonight for the AAA title, wonder if he loses that one too?

Zcat 2 years ago - Christian was always overrated Edge carried that team- Edge multi world champ and great draw

Zcat yesterday - Christian was underrated- wwe didn’t use him right - 5 star match with omega

Atleast Christian finally got a five star match. He can thank Omega for that.

If y’all remember I posted about Hayter about a month or two ago. I thought it was Becky Lynch for a second when I first saw her.

Man that crowd was nuts, even for AEW. You just don’t see that anymore. They were hot the entire hour.
