CI Wrestling Thread #56

So this clears up the flair stuff…

Ric Flair could be coming to AEW sooner than anyone expected.

Raj Giri of Wrestling Inc reported Flair's contract with WWE did not feature a noncompete clause, meaning he's free to make appearances whenever he wants. He made his first major wrestling appearance at AAA TripleMania XXIX on Friday, accompanying Andrade El Idolo to the ring for his match against Kenny Omega.

Is angle going to aew?

Pretty sure Angle made some comment a couple weeks back about wanting millions to wrestle again. Everyone mentioned that he was not moving well when he last performed in WWE, so almost everyone agrees that he's not worth the price as an in-ring performer.

If he wanted to work at AEW behind the scenes or in front of the camera in a non-wrestling role at a reasonable salary, however, I wouldn't have a problem with that.

At this point I am thinking Vince is releasing guys to go to the AEW and destroy it from within. I wouldn't put anything past that sneaky crapper.

It may come back and bite him in the ass. 17k tix sold for New York with no card. United Center sold out in 4min with no card. I don’t think they’re gonna go away like a lot of people expected.

United Center sold out in 4 minutes but has a shocking amount of tickets available for resale on Ticketmaster and dozens of tickets available for less then $10 on Stub Hub.

I could see this but he doesn’t need to release guys to destroy from within. You give the young twerps, Olivier, and Cody Rhodes enough rope and they’ll eventually hang themselves with all of this nonsense.

Rampage did 740,000 viewers on Friday night with a .30 in the demo. That put it 3rd for the night behind two NFL Preseason games. It did a .42 with males 18-49.

That’s probably true, but AEW is still making money. As long as they’re making money, hopefully they can keep up and keep it going.

Well it depends - if people overestimate the secondary market then they will stop buying them up - if the secondary market cant sell tickets for 10 then a regular person won’t pay full ticket price either (guessing it’s between 10-50 depending on section)

Yeah they sold out the United Center but scalpers aren’t going to eat those tickets next time. Now maybe non-scalpers will come in and buy the tickets but why aren’t they buying them now when they’re a fraction of the price?

Are the tickets scalpers are selling not being bought up? Idk

People like you have said that dumb crap about those 4 for several years now and they do nothing but continue to exceed everyone’s expectations and succeed. Only a fool would bet against them.

The overnight ratings for Smackdown came out at 2.499M Saturday. Meltzer said that wasn’t right and the real number will be much lower because nfl games got added. He was then attacked all weekend by the E drones saying he was clueless and many other things. The actual rating came out today at 2.08M. But of course those same people didn’t come back to take their medicine.

Btw, Kenny is pissed. Flair broke many laws.

I want them to succeed. I’ve said that since the conception. They will never take over wwe. Those are facts but as an fan of the business, there is too much talent for one company to have the monopoly on everyone. Competition is good for business. I just don’t agree with the AEW model. Those four i mentioned have talent but I don’t think they have what it takes to transform the industry. It’s too hokey with those guys. What AEW does has no rhyme or reason. Things seem forced, and they bounce around from program to program. Cody can work but he is not as good as he thinks. He got bigger than the business. You’d think with his pedigree and past time in the big leagues he would learn some things. His stuff is too forced. Kenny and the Bucks had a few good things in Japan but that stuff doesn’t translate that well in America. It’s great for their current fans but as you see in the ratings, they don’t necessarily grow the product. Sure some shows have bumps in ratings but for the most part no new eyes are on the product. Eventually, that schtick will get watered down over here.

The nWo was possibly the coolest thing in wrestling. It even drew new eyeballs but even then, the proper know how wasn’t backing it and it even petered out. It still gets over for nostalgia but in its day, it got old. WCW got old, and the cream again rose to the top. That’s the trajectory I see for AEW. You can only spend so much on unused talent before you end up in a WCW situation.

If the rumors are true, the "cream" are cutting wrestlers left and right and looking to sell the business.

One fed is growing at a dizzying pace, the other is downsizing. Regardless of your personal preferences or beliefs, if you don't recognize that AEW has been wildly successful as a fed despite WWE maneuvering in multiple ways to undercut them, you are deceiving yourself.

And, I dare say, the best is yet to come.

The current smackdown product may have some of the best stuff WWF has had in 10 plus years.

Curious what you mean the best is yet to come - despite punk and Bryan all but being locks to go to aew the secondary market is giving tickets at 7 bucks a pop - don’t get me wrong I like you are Robert as posters so curious how aew will grow over 1 mil in the ratings - they need people like Robert who is likely speaking from a casual/lapsed fan perspective if they want to ever see a 2 million rating

And if there is ever a time for them to grow it’s now with smack down and nxt (for now) being the only watchable programming

I checked the links cricket provided. I see a bunch of cheap seats at the very top of the bowl being discounted by resellers. So it may not be the hottest seat in town, as the scalpers believed, and people won't pay stupid prices for the crappiest seats (Personally, I'm glad to see scalpers taking a bath because us common folk should be able to buy tickets direct at face value). But if you want to scroll down a bit after following the link, you will see that as you get into the lower seats, the prices go up and exceed face value. There's still plenty of demand for good seats.

I say the best is yet to come because Rome wasn't built in a day. I know the talent they have, I know the names that are reportedly coming, and TK has proven to be up to the task, so I am excited for their future. But what you fail to recognize is that AEW is already successful. Warner Media sees it, that's why they have spent tens of millions to secure rights to AEW shows for years to come. I think AEW will continue to grow and try to create buzz and amass viewership, but even if they held at where they are they are a valuable asset to WarnerMedia and are delivering viewership that eclipses all other programming except for live sports.

I know Paul Wight and Mark Henry signed with AEW a while back, but haven’t seen anything out of them yet.

Where are they and what are they doing?

Both are doing work weekly as announcers/interviewers, though Paul Wight just got involved in an angle with QT Marshall after QT's stable attacked Tony Schiavone's son (don't know if that signals more in-ring work for Wight or not).

Mark henry and Paul Wight are working more as behind the scenes guys. Mark is recruiting talent. Paul is doing his community work, voice acting, and commentary. Though we’ll probably see Paul wrestle at All out against QT Marshall

Looks like a 80s Memphis promo unedited.

Take a second to breathe and gather your thoughts, lil feller.

The announcing work? Yes, mostly. But the angle with QT Marshall was on Dynamite last week: Here's an article covering it with video link

...though it was a QT Marshall segment, so I can understand why you either took a bathroom break during it or just totally tuned it out.
Yeah I must have just stepped away and missed it. They have been playing up the whole QT apologizing to Tony for weeks.
