CI Wrestling Thread #56

Jerry Lynn already said before they stopped telling people stuff because they won’t stop leaking it to the dirt sheets.

And this report is just proof positive that Dave, Alvarez, and people at AEW never learned anything and never will.

Not to even mention Dave and Alvarez’s information gets debunked on a near daily basis these days. Often times so inaccurate that it gets debunked within less than an hour by PWI or Fightful.

One of the more recent grossly inaccurate reports they had was the Ivar injury. Could have the wrestler wrong but Dave said the injury was just storyline and he didn’t need to get surgery. Several other first sheets debunked that report in like and hour and then same day Ivar posted online about having to get surgery.

It’s just an embarrassing like of journalistic integrity coming out of WOR these days.

Finisher ? Is there such a thing in wrestling anymore ? Well I mean before the 4th attempt ? Kicking out of supposed finishing moves three or four times has made wrestling almost unwatchable. You know the first couple of times at minimum, they are kicking out.
Yep I agree that when Jake the Snake gave you the DDT you wasn't getting up. Now guys do every variation of a DDT there is and everyone kicks out. It's the same with Flair's figure four.

How do you know your storylines are in the crapper? When Toni Storm acting like she's an eccentric 1930's era actress is the best gimmick you have in the company that's how.

Roman Reigns took like 5 F5's from Lesner and still survived. LOL, before, one and your ass was finished. By trying to make guys look strong by kicking out, it makes the offensive guy look weak but the other guy kicking out of so many finishing moves. You can still have finishing moves in Wrestling, hell maybe even kick out of one, but 4/5 times ? It makes the move just another part of the match. Same with the high flying spots. you can still have them, just not EVERY other sequence be that.

Savage gave Warrior something like 11 elbow drops in a row and UW got right back up. Even as a kid I was thinking, "wtf is happening?" Then whenever Rock and Austin faced each other, Austin would usually take 2 Rock Bottoms and Rock usually 3 Stunners.

Curious about Swerve vs Ospreay. With adding the number one contender stip to the Owen tourney and now doing champ vs champ (like Cody vs Paul) out of nowhere, is Tony just copying some of what WWE is doing? I saw a photo of Daniels as the new GM or whatever and he even looked just like Adam Pierce.

Also, MJF should've been on the show. He apparently cut a promo on everyone at the PPV (my guess is because you can cuss there and cussing is cool) but Dynamite misses him. I even fired the show up to see if he'd come out first but when I saw the giant CEO letters, I changed the channel.

Not only did warrior get back up. He also pinned Savage with a foot on his chest. He also totally no sold the pedigree (not that HHH meant anything at the time)

Ya lucky for us we got two ceo segments and somehow went from revealing her attacker to pinning her in a 90 minute span.

That’d be like nailz showing up as the prisoner coming after big boss man at the beginning of wwf superstars man then within the same superstars episode boss man beats nailz.

They already announced that MJF will be returning to Dynamite next week

Very curious about swerve v Ospreay so soon. Ospreay has to win in London, doesn’t he? Maybe some DQ/double countout finish and then run it back in London?

I agree they should have had MJF the next show after his return. Didn’t have to be anything other than a ten minute promo but everyone wanted to see the guy and they should have made that happen.

Dynamite was up in the ratings this week with 787,000 viewers and a .25 in the demo.

NXT was up big from last week with 703,000 and a .24. Maybe that rapper I've never heard of helped the number.

Raw did 1,690,000 and a .55 on Monday.

Interesting…

The woman who is currently suing ex-WWE boss Vince McMahon is pausing her lawsuit at the request of the Justice Department, according to the woman's lawyer.

Janel Grant, the former WWE employee who sued McMahon, the company and former WWE executive John Laurinaitis in January, agreed to pause her lawsuit.

"Ms. Grant has consented to a request by the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York to stay her case against Mr. McMahon, WWE and Mr. Laurinaitis, pursuant to a pending non-public investigation," Ann Callis, a lawyer for Grant, said in a statement to ABC News. "We will cooperate with all appropriate next steps."

Austin debuted at the start of '96 and didn't win the title until spring of '98. I'm not saying Ospreay should wait years but he just debuted in March. He has a nice record and just won a title. Giving him the keys to the company in August just seems incredibly fast...even though he's more than ready. I'd probably pump the brakes and let him do what he's doing currently. He's young and will be there for years to come. The pop in London this year would be great but it'd be even louder in August next year after he's been full time for around 17 months. I just worry about the pattern here, long MJF reign then fans wanted Joe. Joe's reign was nothing special imo. By Feb., fans wanted Swerve. It's been Swerve's time for a few weeks and now fans are dreaming of Ospreay.

Positive ratings there for both shows. Big Red or whoever that was on NXT is a draw and the Grace and Page surprises were smart. I think once NXT moves to the CW we're going to see ratings in the 700K's for them consistently, esp. if they become the "cool" brand like Black & Gold was.

The Dynamite rating is a good start and I hope they build on it next week. They don't need MJF all over the show like the end of last year but they need to start promoting him heavily for some type of segment. I wonder if he's actually cleared yet.

Lol yeah, I don't understand it at all. That's a storyline you could get a few weeks out of and it's over in a single night. Even saw a lot of fans in one of the reddit show threads saying "well, wasn't expecting Blue but I like her getting a big push here" and we see how that went. Now Mone starts another feud next week and Blue is what, back on Collision by Saturday? Frustrating...

AEW doesn’t do screwy finishes like DQs and countouts on PPV main events. Hell, I can only remember one countout finish in the entire history of AEW for that matter.

But the winner of the Owen gets the title shot at Wembley so there’s zero reason to do something like that at Forbidden Door

Best number for Dynamite since the NBA playoffs started. Coincidentally it’s the first Dynamite not going up against an NBA playoff game. Not a a number to particularly brag about by any means, but people kept telling me there wasn’t any overlap between NBA and AEW fans. Well there’s your proof right there there is some.

The Southern District of New York has like a 95% conviction rate.

We wanted Joe moreso just to get the title off MJF than we wanted Joe to actually win.

Considering his biggest injury was his shoulder, doubt they let him deliver a brainbuster to Cole if he wasn’t cleared

It’s Forbidden Door season with CMLL and Stardom involved, every women’s match on the PPV card is going to be AEW vs. international talent.

So I wouldn’t have even had Skye Blue involved in that angle at all. Could have easily revealed that the attacker was Stephanie Vaquer since that’s going to be Mercedes’ opponent at Forbidden Door.

I love Joe and he was okay as champion, it just wasn't really memorable. Hell, Priest's run won't be remembered either so it's not a big deal but I don't know how I feel about the fans dictating who the champion should be. We're fickle af. On that, I actually trust TK. I think Swerve actually beats Ospreay though.

Fans always dictate who is champion. They don’t dictate the timing but they dictate who the champions are. At least in companies where the booker doesn’t actively hate his fans like Vince did.

You think Cody Rhodes ever wins the WWE title if he’s coming out to crickets every week?

And I agree with you, Swerve is winning. And I don’t see Ospreay winning the title at Wembley now either.

Unless they do the entire Owen Hart Cup in 10 days after Forbidden Door (Owen Finals are in Calgary on July 10 and FD is like June 30) and Ospreay wins it. Because remember the Owen Hart Cup winner gets the Wembley AEW title shot. So Ospreay has to be in it if he loses to Swerve.

Or they do something really weird, start the Owen BEFORE Forbidden Door, and include Ospreay in it even though he’ll have a title shot at FD. Which of course wouldn’t make a damn bit of sense.

It going to take some convoluted booking to get Ospreay in the AEW title match at Wembley if he loses at FD.

Don’t worry I think TK’s middle name is convoluted.

They’ve had the partnership with CMLL for a couple months so ya I agree that would have been a better reveal.

I really loved the second edition of the Casino Gauntlet match. The first time they did it I was cautiously optimistic about the match format because it eliminated most of the stuff that makes battle royals and royal rumbles a largely boring in-ring product.

But commentary didn’t do a particularly great job of explaining it, the field of competitors was hit and miss with quite a few who were clearly not going to win, and obviously with it being the first try there was going to be some trial and error involved.

But last night they did a much better job all around. And the high stakes saw them put all high-level competitors in it that could conceivably win (other than maybe Lio Rush) as opposed to a quite a lot of people who have zero chance of winning like regular Battle Royals/Royal Rumbles tend to do.

On the complete polar opposite end of thing…

I tried keeping an open mind and giving it a chance but this Jericho Learning Tree stuff is abysmal. Like change the channel bad. Some of the worst stuff AEW has ever done. And the set they used for it looked complete amateur hour. Can’t believe they green lit that knowing a bunch of WBD execs were going to be there.

The stupidest thing American wrestling has largely failed to adapt from 90s and early 2000s Japanese was the adoption of super finishers. These were rarely used, but when they pulled them out it was a “holy shit” type moment and the opponent was 100% dead to rights. But the beauty of it is that it also helps really put over the toughness of the loser because he forced the winner to have to resort to the deadly super finisher to put him down.

Need an example? Kenta Kobashi’s Burning Hammer. Only used seven times, all seven times were to end classic matches mostly for titles, and it was never kicked out of.

It’s actually like what AEW is seemingly building up to with Will Ospreay’s Tiger Driver 91.

To all the people I have blocked in this thread: thank you for hate watching the Cornette stuff! It’s appreciated! One of our best months! Granted, she’s got scholarships, but we still have to pay some for our daughters college, so (blows kiss to the blocked) thank you for putting money in my pocket! Haha
