Football ***** Stoops Monday Press Luncheon - Gator Bowl Preview *****

Hello HOB. I’m over at Kroger Field today for Mark Stoops’ press conference to discuss Kentucky’s invitation to the Gator Bowl and a matchup with Clemson. Stoops is scheduled to address the media at approx Noon ET. Stay tuned for updates…

MARK STOOPS Q&A:

* Reps from the UK Childrens Hospital and Kentucky For The Kids foundation are here today before the press conference to present a check for $635K added for a total of $1.1M to help those charitable efforts. Stoops notes that this effort began under Rich Brooks and continues today with help from dedicated assistants like Eddie Gran.

* Stoops says Clemson has a physical team, built very much like a lot of SEC teams they face.

* Likes the way this team has finished the season and stuck with it, finding a way to bring the Governor’s Cup back to Lexington and getting invited to this bowl game.

* It’s been a hectic time. Spent a good portion of last week meeting with just about every player on the team. Assistants have met with all the players. Came away encouraged by the feedback. Quite a few want to come back and feel like they still have things to accomplish here. Thinks participation will be close to 100% for this bowl game.

* Follow-up question on Ray Davis… They knew all along this was probably a “one-and-done” situation. Anticipated this all along, that he would enter the draft. Does not write off the possibility of Davis changing his mind on playing in the Gator Bowl. They may have another talk about it soon.

* Need to hit the portal hard at some spots on the offensive side of the ball. Fairly stable on the defensive side. It was important, though, to get Eli Cox and Marques Cox back on the O-Line. Gives us a great nucleus For that unit.

* Devin Leary is excited to play in a bowl game and to have one last opportunity with this team.

* On WR depth and recent losses to the portal… Have to go get some guys just for numbers and building depth. It takes 5-6 guys contributing throughout the season.

* On having something to prove vs. a program like Clemson… Thinks the whole team is. These games often come down to who’s willing to put in the work from now until the game begins.

* On big-name QBs in the portal…. Not going to talk about guys individually, but they’re on it. Working on guys.

* On Dabo Swinney… Knows him just from crossing paths, but not much of a personal relationship. But can’t help but feel like he knows him from him being on the national stage.

* On attracting RBs with the success they’ve had… Should be able to do that, and also thinks they’ve got quality guys in the program right now.

* This time of year runs 24/7… Has good friends in town and has to tell them you don’t have time to do anything. It’s probably the busiest time of the year between now and Dec. 20th or so. It’s hectic.

* On extra practice time… Challenging while recruiting at the same time, being on the road so much. It’s a balancing act for a couple of weeks.

* On the portal and tampering concerns… If I say something, everyone’s going to blow it out of proportion, but use your common sense: it’s inevitable.

* RBs Ju’Tahn McClain and Ramon Jefferson both plan to play in the bowl game. Has changed his opinion on that over the years. Thinks a guy like McClain has contributed so much to the program. Has done everything they’ve asked of him. Both guys deserve an opportunity to show what they can do.

* Not sure if any of the younger guys might play in the bowl game yet.

* On what he’s looking for in a WRs coach… Not ready to say much about that yet, doesn’t want to be interpreted as saying something that Woody wasn’t doing right.

* On reaction he’s received to the Texas A&M situation… None whatsoever.. We moved past that in like 5 minutes. He got one phone call from “one very large human being” (currently on the team) wanting to know what the situation was, and both sides assured each other they are coming back.

* They've had talks with Liam about going more up-tempo. Want to find a way to do that and stay clean with the operation. I want to go faster. I don't like to be standing by the official all the time. The last time he was here, we played faster. That doesn't mean it's going to be warp speed like some schools do, but we want the ability to go faster at the LOS.

* Hopes that they have a chance to get Wilcox in the bowl game at RB. “I want to see it… He has some super upside.”

* Doesn’t want to speak for Dru Phillips, but believes he’s playing in the bowl game even though he’s declared for the draft.

* Likes the upcoming 12-team playoff for 2024. Think that's the good number right now. When you're arguing about teams 12 or 13, they're not really in the hunt anyway. But there's a very real argument between teams 4 and 5 right now.

* Important to win any bowl game, but thinks it could give them an even bigger boost going into next season by beating someone like Clemson. It’s always a much better feeling to walk off the field after having a bowl trophy handed to you. A complete opposite reaction if you walk off the field after losing.

JOHN CALIPARI Q&A:

* Calipari: This was St. Joe's again where we couldn't stay in front of anyone. The difference in this and St. Joe's, though, is this was a game we couldn't make shots, and you're going to have some like that.

* UNC-Wilmington deserved to win. Shot well. Played well. Had less turnovers than us. We were trying to make the hardest possible play. Without our point guard, we held the ball much more than we have this season. Why didn't we take more 3s, you ask, guys were holding the ball. That's not us.

* Have some time between games at this time of year. Can't revert back to that old team that holds the ball, even if you have one guy missing. Sometimes you have to get burned before you realize it. Tends to happen with young teams. Every coach that I talk to tells me how fun it is to watch our team play. They weren't fun to watch today.

* Rebounding was an issue. There were three times we had the game where we wanted it, don't block out, give up the And-1.

* Cal seems to take a shot at the fans via Reed Sheppard, re: "your favorite player of all-time giving up 17 straight-line drives to the basket" while talking about the team's poor on-ball defense. That seemed a little unnecessary, although it may be true today. He did spend a lot of time after this comment talking about UK's need to improve defensively as a team and to stay in front of people.

* I hate losing, but we have to learn from games like this.

* On Aaron Bradshaw's debut... For his first time out, probably in the plus (+11) obviously that says he was OK. "That's a good start for him."

* No news on DJ Wagner at all, Cal says.

UNC-WILMINGTON TAKAYO SIDDLE:

* Responded with some haymakers today. Very proud of our guys.

* On what they did to get UK out of its flow... Wanted to extend pressure up the court, get into the passing lanes, flush them to the paint a bit. They may have believed they had an advantage in the paint. Not sure. But it paid off for us.

* On coming here with Gardner Webb and winning... Just told his guys to believe, anything can happen. THey understood the message and believed they could win the game. Came in here and executed the gameplan.

Wildcats Take Down Terriers, Advance to Second Round

Kentucky and Baylor will play tomorrow at 7 p.m. ET inside historic Rupp Arena

KENTUCKY POSTGAME NEWS CONFERENCE | WOFFORD POSTGAME NEWS CONFERENCE

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Freshman Brooklyn DeLeye had 13 kills and nine digs, while senior Elise Goetzinger had 12 kills as Kentucky topped Wofford 25-17, 25-15, 25-16 on Thursday night in the first round of the NCAA Women’s Volleyball Tournament at Rupp Arena.

Kentucky (20-7) hit .390 as a team in the match compared to just .155 for Wofford. The Cats had 46 digs in the match, paced by 15 from junior Eleanor Beavin.

The Wildcats took control of the match early, hitting a red-hot .469 in the first set. UK had 18 kills and only three errors on 32 swings in the first stanza. After hitting .259 in set two, the Cats hit .415 in the final set as they secured the victory.

Wofford (23-8) was making its first-ever NCAA Tournament experience in volleyball. In fact, it was the first NCAA Tournament appearance by any women’s athletic team at Wofford. The Terriers got eight kills from Sarah MacLean and Sarah Barham. Emily Hodsdon had 13 assists and Taylor Pecht had 12 for Wofford.

Kentucky advances to Friday’s second-round match where they will meet Baylor at 7 p.m. ET. The Bears beat James Madison in three sets earlier on Thursday.

NCAA VOLLEYBALL POSTGAME QUOTES

KENTUCKY VS. WOFFORD

RUPP ARENA – LEXINGTON, KY.

NOVEMBER 30, 2023

KENTUCKY QUOTES

Craig Skinner – Head Coach

Opening Statement

“Well, first of all, we had respect for Wofford going into that match and we have a lot more now. Wofford is a very well-coached team and they know what their strengths are and they do them very well and they do not make mistakes very often. So, we had to transition and score our own points and credit to them for the way they play the game. I thought we did a nice job of controlling our errors and I think there’s some kills we left out there but overall, pleased also with the defensive effort that got better as the match went on.”

On if he was worried about differences in play because of the stage …

“You know, I think sometimes you might think that, but the team certainly convinced us each day this week that they were ready to compete. And you know, the demeanor didn’t change in practice, being intentional about what we’re doing and trying to fine tune some things was there all week, so the feel wasn’t a whole lot different, you know, and like we told them there should be some nerves. I mean, you care and you’re competitors and, you know, it’s the NCAA tournament so embrace it and compete.”

On Baylor and how the game goes tomorrow …

“Yeah, a lot of respect for Baylor’s program and they’ve had a lot of great wins this year and, you know, a little bit more complex offense the way they run it and the speed that they have and variations of where they attack along the net. So certainly, be prepared for that, they’re going to have some special kills and when we get opportunities we’re going to have to capitalize on them.”

On what the next 24 hours looks like for the team …

“As a coach? Well, we are going to watch video as soon as I leave here to give us an indication of what their tendencies are. And go home and hopefully get something to eat, get a good night’s sleep and brush my teeth in the morning. You know, just same game day routine. I mean, we’ve scouted all these teams that came, we spent a lot of time on Wofford scouting them, we spent a lot of time on Baylor, a lot of time on James Madison. So now fine tuning what we saw tonight in the morning and watching video again tomorrow, and then serve-pass and typical game day routine, but it’s a challenge for both of us and certainly got to be mentally tough to be able to compete at seven o’clock tomorrow night.”

#15, Azhani Tealer

On what experiences can you draw on to help younger player improve as they go into their first NCAA tournament…

“I’ve experienced great wins and awesome tournament runs, and I’ve also experienced tough losses early on that we didn’t think were going to happen. As Brooklyn [DeLeye] said, coming in and playing like this is our last time because tomorrow is not promised and knowing we have to play hard tonight and that at this point every team is good. Every team wants to win, and the will is there so we have to come out ready to fight for the whole two-hour match.”

On how you are feeling about playing back-to-back nights …

“We’ve had to do it a couple of years in the SEC, but we haven’t done it this year and that’s a little different, but we are ready to go.”

On what are your emotions going into your last game in Rupp Arena tomorrow …

“I was thinking about it a little bit when I was on the court. I was like, man, this is tough. I’ve been here five years and I have loved every second. Theres not too many people who have taken more pride in wearing this jersey than I have, so it’s going to be emotional but hopefully we will come out on top and that will make it a bit sweeter. It’s something I have been thinking about and dreading but were ready for it and were ready to win.”

#17, Brooklyn DeLeye

On what were the nerves like going into this match and how do you think the team responded…

“I think we just went into this game as if it was going to be our last and I think going in together and playing as a team really helped.”

On how you are feeling about playing back-to-back nights…

“I haven’t been here before, so I haven’t experienced anything else, so I am up for the challenge.”

On what it is like amongst the team when you guys are moving in the right direction in a match…

“I think that goes along with taking every point at a time and not really looking at the score and what’s going on around us, but just taking in the moment.”

Louisville has ALWAYS been a MYTH

Their fans do not understand that even their glory years were a mirage. They feasted on bad teams on Tuesday nights in CUSA and would usually still manage to lose to a bad team that would keep them from being undefeated (Rutgers, UCF, et al).

Even when UK was bad and UL was "good", UK was still winning more big games than they were (e.g. UL cannot sniff another win that approaches the win over LSU in 2007). The only GREAT UL win was against FSU at home the gameday game, but otherwise, there is very little meat on that bone.

They are now in a bad conference (again) with very few teams that put any kind of focus or resources into football. They got the luxury of playing a schedule with no Clemson, FSU, or UNC this year (I mean, does Brohm have naked pictures of someone in the ACC office?).

UK has the better team, the better program, the better fanbase, the better university, more resources, better stadium, better campus, better conference, and a ton more conference money and exposure. There is no reason why UK should lose to UL on any kind of regular basis. The gap between the haves and have nots will only continue to increase and UL is a have-not.

Even when the media buys into the fraudulent records, and even when their ridiculous "fans" (in quotes, b/c there are very few of them) get chirpy, always remember these facts. They are who they have always been.
