The Silence From Barnhart Is Deafening, And Stoops Deserves No Comment, At Best!

If Barnhart even wants to keep Stoops, after that post-U of L meltdown last season with aTm, Barnhart had to feel he was being screwed by Stoops. Making Stoops a 9 million dollar a year man and putting his own neck on the line, then seeing Stoops playing footsie with aTm . . . bet there ain’t no Barnhart gift under the Stoops Christmas tree (unless a 36 million dollar buyout counts).

Pope statement that Players not leaning on /trusting the system

This may be the heart of it. Players have not fully invested in the system and instead of making the next pass, screen, or cut they go try to get a bucket. Ive wondered why Robinson looks passive in the offense.....but it makes sense that he is the only one who has played this system before and is playing within the offense when others arent.

FB Recruiting ***National Signing Day UPDATES***

Will post news as we get it or as it's announced, updating this original post and also adding new ones. Feel free to chime in with thoughts or what you see.

Expecting Kentucky to sign a solid class by the rankings today. Is it good enough on the offensive line where they have to get better long-term? In this day and age, is it even really nearly as important as it used to be, with questions about Stoops' longevity and with the focus so much on the transfer portal?

All fair questions, but we are tracking recruiting today.

(12:51) Only waiting on DJ Miller

(11:11) Stone Saunders, Montavin Quisenberry, CJ Miller, Mikkel Skinner also in

(9:54) Jermiel Atkins is in

(9:37) Kalen Edwards, Demarcus Gardner, Andrew Purcell are in. Three of the more highly regarded players in the class

(8:55) Martels Carter Jr sticks with UK and signs with the Cats

(8:45) Javeon Campbell, Dyllon Williams, Cedric Works, Jayden Clark all in for the Cats.

(8:08) QB Brennen Ward is in.... Waiting on Stone Saunders but he has said he's signing with UK.

(7:59) As expected WR Cam Miller sends in his NLI for Kentucky.

(7:51) WR Preston Bowman is in. UK's WR class should look pretty strong at the end of the day.

(7:43) DE Nicholas Smith is UK's first signed & announced player.

(7:32 am) Cam Miller is expected to announce early, but Grant Grayton told me yesterday he didn't know what time he'd announce

Pope: "I don't want to foul my own guys out."

"One of the things that every coach struggles with is you never want to foul your own guy out. And I probably did that a little bit with Andrew tonight. Probably needed to play him with two fouls in the first half. I probably could have done a little bit more with Lamont. Late in the first half, I made what turned out to be a very poor miscalculation. We had gone on a little run and so I went small thinking that I could save (Carr) and save Ansley (Almonor) a second, and that went really bad. In hindsight, maybe I roll the dice and play those guys a little bit more in the first half. That'll be something we'll argue about and have no answer for. Philosophically, I don't want to foul my own guys out."

Credit to Coach Pope for recognizing sometimes you need to play your guys even when they're in foul trouble. I can't count how many times Cal "fouled his own guy out" in the first half and we never recovered.

Also, his humility to own his mistakes and learn from them is refreshing.

Best Christmas Movie - Round Two - Game 4

Best Christmas Movie

  • 4 National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation

    Votes: 23 92.0%
  • 13 The Miracle on 34th Street

    Votes: 2 8.0%

This thread is for the matchup between the number 4 seed and the winner of the 13 aad 20 seeds game.

The number 4 seed is personally my favorite of all Christmas movies. The story of a zany husband, his well-endowed wife, two kids, and the remaining family, is sure to bring a smile to your face. Some great older actors were cast as parents and older relatives, and they delivered. It is also probably the only Christmas movie whose script includes the word, "dickless."

The other one is Miracle on 34th Street. It's super boring, but is a good story. Whatever.

The specifics of the Mark Stoops employment agreement

The original agreement is dated November 26, 2012 and there have been six amendments, most recently on November 10, 2022 extending the term to June 30, 2031. There are buyout provisions both ways. If Stoops gave his notice now to terminate the contract voluntarily, he is actually required to pay UK $3.5 million.

On the other hand, if it is UK who gives the notice and the termination is pursuant to the "without cause" provision, the terms are not conducive to a discount of the buyout amount on the basis of a negotiated settlement. John Calipari's contract provided for the buyout amount to be paid in installments over the remaining term. Also, Calipari had a duty to actively pursue other coaching positions, i.e., he could not just withdraw to a villa on the French Riviera. Moreover, UK received credit on the buyout for Calipari's future earnings. There was incentive for Calipari to make a deal to be free of such entanglements.

Stoops has no such incentive because he receives the buyout in the form of an immediate lump sum payment.

The other scenario is termination "for cause" which is specifically defined to include the usual scenarios: complicity in NCAA violations, a felony conviction, gambling activity involving UK games, etc.. There is also a specific "cause" provision regarding "failure to follow any written University policies or procedures, including any written policies of the Athletic Department." That caught my attention because in the agreement itself, Stoops is required to "notify the Director of Athletics of any offers of employment, employment opportunities or requests for meetings or discussions with respect to possible employment opportunities before engaging in substantive discussions regarding such employment or employment opportunities."

I don't know all the facts of the communications involving Mark Stoops and Texas A&M and the extent to which Stoops notified Mitch Barnhart. If Stoops was less than candid, I can see possible leverage inuring to UK's benefit in a negotiation.

The buyout conversation has to happen

"Dont even talk about the buyout happening" is going to set this program back another 10 years.

Mitch, DO SOMETHING. Our program is dead and buried and Jon Sumrall is there for the taking. Right now. Missing this moment could be whay we look back on for the next 30 years.

Is mitch even awake? Is he in Lexington? Anybody?

Defining moment.

Road Game Loss

Maybe/Hopefully I'm not alone but I was bitterly disappointed in our loss at Clemson.

We were ranked 4th, I bought in that we were all the way back and past getting beat on the road by an unranked team. Because that is what I wanted to believe...... but there are going to be plenty of places in this year's SEC like it.

I bought in too soon. We are still two studs away from being there. Two guys that just take #4 and his 20 rebounds and zero fouls line and say "No, little boy, not tonight"

Still, it was just a 4 point loss and all is not lost...... just gonna be a lot tougher than I was hoping/dreaming for.

Using the small sample size of Pope's one season in the Big12, they finished like 3-6 on the road and exact opposite 7-2 at home.... something like that. Also, the red line was below 33% from 3.... loss........ above 33% from 3.... win

So we need to turn Rupp into an absolute GD Fortress...... beating Arkansas, Auburn, Bama and UT there.... and steal one or two on the road..... we will get upset on the road again.

I think that can be done

Looking at UK’s WRs…

i think there’s a really good chance that UK ends up with the tiniest WR corp (size wise) in NCAA football next season unless they have significant portal additions.

Fred Farrier - 6’0 180lbs
ABS - 5’10 175lbs
Hardley Gilmore - 6’0 175lbs
Jamari Maclin - 5’11 185lbs
David Washington - 5’11 190lbs
Brandon White - 5’9 167lbs
Montavious Quissenberry - 5’9 170lbs
Cam Miller - 5’11 170lbs
Q. Simmons 6’1 175lbs

LoLoLoL.

Basketball ***** Mark Pope Show News & Notes - Dec. 4 *****

Hello HOB. I'll be following along with the CMP Show tonight and sharing all the main talking points here on the HOB for those of you who may not be able to listen along live. Show is underway here at 7 ET. Stay tuned...

* Our ceiling is so much higher than what we showed at Clemson, but really happy with the core competitiveness we displayed.

* The physicality Clemson had really impacted the game, and the way the game is called now (which is way better, by the way) allowed them to use some of that physicality to their advantage. They're long, big-chested, and well-coached in maintaining verticality. Sometimes it leads to you taking fool's gold at the rim and having a tougher shot than you thought you had.

* Asked how you improve at the FT line... Practice, reps, and concentration. Sports psychology is a crucial part of what we do, and we'll lean into that as well.

* On the halfcourt offense stalling with the big men at times... Great question, Pope says. They may have gone to that iso a bit too much, and guys were stagnant when they went to that set, so it wasn't always the big man. We played into the hands of their defensive approach. Our bigs didn't make great decisions, and the other four guys stopped moving on them a lot. That's a fundamental DNA piece of our system, so we have to get it right. Going smaller is another counter you can use in those situations, but I was a little gunshy of that because we got blasted on the glass in the first half. There may not have been a good answer to that last night. Ultimately, we lost, so I was wrong.

* On Koby Brea not being on the floor at the end of the game... He's growing as a defensive player and all-around player, but we had a couple of issues early in the game and started rolling with a different group with Lamont coming in and out. Felt like we needed Otega out there more at times. Had considered maybe using Jaxson Robinson at the point, which he has done before in the past, maybe that could have opened another opportunity for Koby. Second-guessing some of the decisions he had to make in that one.

* Asked what Kerr Kriisa has to learn from last night's game, Pope says he's a vet, he's seen it all. He will learn and grow from it. He's such a key to our pace in the game, such a creator. In somewhat limited minutes, he's our leading assist guy. He was good defensively in certain moments during the game.

* Cats had an extended film session today to refresh why they're doing things a certain way and how to approach it under duress. Guys remain curious and hungry to get better, to keep chasing that high ceiling.

* Caller wants to know if the over/under on the ice cream he bought for fans at Rupp Arena was $2,000.... Oooooooover Pope says with a laugh. "But it was worth it."

* Asked if we're going to see any press like he did when he played in the 90s, Pope said you'll see it in spots, just not a steady diet of it like they did in 1996. Says it's not within his capacity to coach it the way Coach P did.

* Our guys were really torn up last night, Pope said. They know the expectations, and it's brutal to lose. Our guys felt it.

* Asked about how hard it is to get so many new guys together trusting each other... Pope says you have to re-route a lot of habits from the past. You have to learn how to function in a new way when you face adversity, trust what you're doing now, the guys around you now. Sometimes that growth process can be painful. It was last night.

* Pope says he's changed a lot over the last 10 years in terms of how he coaches. He originally copied a lot of the things his old coaches did. Wasn't always working out for him or his players. Started taking a more positivity approach, a laser-focus of what we're trying to do. It has functioned well for our team so far.

* Asked about pressing again, Pope says we're kinda lemmings in the basketball world, and right now not many are interested in pressing. But someone might figure it out again and cause a revolution. But he's skeptical because (A) the skill level has changed tremendously in handling the ball, passing, shooting; and (B) officials won't allow what the did back in the 90s. Also noted that a lot of teams would just pull up for 3 now instead of playing into your plan of making them take it to the rim if they beat the pressure.

* Gonzaga is another big challenge for us. We're looking forward to another opportunity to get out there and compete.
