From a draft stock perspective, what would it have hurt for Shaedon Sharpe to play the last month of the season?

The young man is becoming a stud for the Blazers.

I keep looking back at his decision to not suit up for Kentucky. What was the rationale there? From all accounts, he was dazzling in practices that winter/spring and was the best player in the practice gym.

It seems like the most selfish decision in the history of our program, and I'm not even sure what the defense would be at this point.

Adou playing time

I don't like the whole idea that Adou is going to be losing minutes I really think he is an important part of this team. He doesn't demand shots but he is a good slasher and a physical presence on defense and crashing the boards. This team needs those skills.

The thing about Justin is he isn't an effecient shooter but he is still going to jack them up and he seems to be a guy other teams try to isolate on defense. I also don't think he does the tough things quite as well as Adou. If Justin would buy into being less of an offensive presence and more like Thiero I would feel a lot better. He has shown the ability to crash the offensive glass so it is just about commitment. This team should look to get the majority of our shots from our terrific guards. I really love the way this team plays I just think Adou brings more to the table than what he is given credit for and you don't have to worry about funneling shots to least effecient shooters.

My talk with the Kentucky 15

I mentioned in another thread that I'd had a recent conversation with a representative of the KY15. A few asked me to start a thread and share what I learned. Interaction is below...

So, I received an email from the KY15 back on 12/5, which was unusual as I canceled my “donation” back after the USCjr fiasco. Said they’d like to do a Zoom or phone call to talk to me about what they’re doing going forward. As I’ve seen a ton online how clear as mud the whole program is, I decided to do the Zoom and see what was said.

First and foremost, he apologized up front for how badly everything was handled from the start. He said in their haste to get NIL funds going to athletes, they kind of put the cart before the horse with the donor experience. He was very transparent on that, and said his firm was brought on to help enhance the donor experience. They're working on doing a site revamp along with the other changes coming.

He then talked about some of the upcoming giveaways (which they’re going to do monthly starting in January, all things going smoothly). He mentioned signed memorabilia from a FB player with the Gator Bowl patch on the jersey. Also mentioned signed memorabilia with all the signees from the current recruiting class. In future months they would look at doing other giveaways with FB and BB teams.

A cool feature he mentioned they have in the works, that I thought were a great idea…and frankly what brought me back on board, was they’re going to a points system for the donors (more you give, more points you earn). In the future, you’ll be able to redeem said points for some really cool things. He gave the example of “Say you have a kid that plays baseball, you’d be able to redeem your points to have one of the UK baseball players come and do a one-hour practice with your kid”. I thought some experience things like that would be a great use of donor points. I shared with him about my experience with the KY causes dinner I won last year, and that lots of people might be as interested in “experience” redemptions as “stuff” redemptions.

He talked about how important this is to the coaching staff, and how much they’re working to do what they can to help with the cause. He said at the last 15 board meeting, he’d asked Coach Stoops to just send a text he could share with the board on how important the 15 was to the FB program. He said while the meeting was progressing and he was waiting for the text, someone knocked on the door. Coach had sent Vince over to talk with them about how grateful the team was for all the 15’s efforts in the NIL game, and that the staff is all in with helping enhance the donor experience. I mentioned maybe having open practices during the season for 15 members might be a good way to show thanks for all they do.

He also left me his cell number and email and told me in the future if I had any questions, to reach out to him personally. I didn’t address the transparency issue most of us have with the 15, because I see both sides of the coin. As a business owner, there’s some info I’m fine with the public knowing. There’s also info that I’d not like made public. I think if other programs knew how much (or how little) the 15 was raising compared to other collectives it would be used as another negative recruiting tool. Maybe one of you will have an idea that could both please everyone on transparency without hurting the collective or the program.

I’ve slept since he and I talked so I may have missed some things that were said, but I hit the high points. I’m also more than happy to collect questions and try to get answers. I’ll tell you all what I told him: I’m tired of UKFB being a laughingstock. I’ve long believed that with the right tools, this program can be successful. I’m just trying to do my small part to help foster that success. Hopefully this can convince a few more people to start donating, especially with the new things coming down the pike.

As an FYI, they’re doing a fan fest for 15 members before a BB game in the coming months. I clarified that if I personally couldn’t attend, I could let someone go in my place (daughter and son-in-law, for example). If you’re a business owner, may be a good way to reward some of your employees/customers (an idea that literally just hit me) if it's something you can't attend.

Let me know, here or PM, if you have any questions/suggestions. I’ll collect them and run them up the flagpole. Maybe the staff can keep this as a running thread to answer questions about the 15.

About to Lose a Commit

According to 247 it looks like Lorenzo Cowan is about to flip from UK to USC. He just took an OV out to LA so its not super surprising but I did think UK would be able to keep him on board since his brother is a freshman at UK. Hes actually the lowest ranked commit besides the punter so its not a crushing loss and he seems like a potential portal candidate for UK down the line as going from Savanah GA to LA is quite the move. It could be somewhat mutual as UK is in a bit of a numbers crunch but I would think UK would have liked to keep him

Portal Overview to Date

We are now more than one week into the first portal wave, which opened for non-graduates on 12/4. Kentucky has begun its work in the portal and it is a methodical process. The staff has an idea of some guys who may be going into the portal as do coaches everywhere. But there are many players who go in and then you pivot and try to make a play. It was never going to be an overnight deal. More like a trickle that gets hot at a couple of different inflection points. Right now we're in the trickle phase where guys come in one-by-one.

Who they've got:

QB Brock Vandagriff - Two years of eligibility. The hope is those two years give him all the material scouts need. He has not been a starter at the college level but neither had Levis. I believe one of the main reasons there is some optimism for an upgrade at quarterback is the belief that Vandagriff will be able to run the offense faster than UK was able to run it with Leary this year. For whatever reason, I think Leary struggled with getting the plays in, lined up, snapped quickly. Vandagriff has been under center, has gotten some great QB coaching, and has intangibles not only from being a coach's son but from being a part of the sport's best program over the last three years.

RB Chip Trayanum - Talent-wise and in terms of the circumstances of Trayanum's transfer it looks very good. He was Ohio State's second-leading rusher this season, although it's fair to point out that it was not a vintage Buckeye rushing attack. Trayanum has played well when he has had opportunity at two different players, Arizona State and Ohio State. That bodes well, as does the fact that he is another high character and thoughtful kid who should be good for the locker room. It is worth mentioning that Trayanum has never been the workhorse in the way that Snell, C Rod, or even this year that Ray Davis was. He seems to be a very different kind of back than Davis, who really thrived in Coen's pro-style offense. Trayanum should be very good for Kentucky's short yardage and red zone running. Do they lose some explosiveness as a offense swapping Trayanum for Davis, and how do they compensate to get more of it?

WR Raymond Cottrell - I spoke with Mark Passwaters of the A&M Rivals site and he told me that Cottrell was one that they did not want to see leave in Aggieland. There have been a lot of A&M players go into the portal and many of them are no loss, but he said that Cottrell is a young prospect they would have done well to keep. Big, physical player, like Shamar Porter it has been mentioned to me a couple of times by different folks. It looked like Cottrell was in line to get some playing time for Texas A&M this year and then he got hurt so that set him back. But a very good sign that a RS-Frosh was going to play for a Bobby Petrino offense before the setback. A real piece to get excited about for the future and helps restore some of the second-line depth that was lost last offseason.

Position-for-position how have needs been met?

1. QB - Needs met but could add another. Vandagriff will have to win the job. Cutter Boley is coming in a year early. Beau Allen is coming in as someone who knows the offense and has some game experience at a lower level. He is coming back as a walk-on. One would think that Allen could step in and play if he needs to, but it would not surprise me if they added another quarterback. I have said that Donaven McCulley would be a great addition not only because he was a breakout receiver when he played last year, but he has extensive backup QB experience. But I have no clue if that would be something that UK would even be interested in. They could theoretically add another quarterback depending on numbers because it's a light room once again. However, with Boley you at least have a coveted prospect. Still, when you think about young guys like Drew Allar at Penn State, Nico Iamaleava at Tennessee, etc., there's an obvious preference to let even the highly-ranked guys have a year of work behind the scenes and off the field, maybe even two years preferably.

2. RB - Need met but could add another. Trayanum is the most likely candidate to start based on the running backs who are in line to be on the roster but there are some X-Factors. Demie Sumo-Karngbaye is someone they started to use more as the season went on but he doesn't have the look of someone who is going to carry a big workload in the backfield. However, he could get more carries and with more receivers on the roster that might be his best path to getting more PT. Jamarion Wilcox is a big variable. We don't know how he will be looking going into fall camp. This will be his first spring practice with the program and could help a lot. He didn't benefit from that last year. Jaquez Keyes is a guy they have been looking at for a couple of years and he could be someone to track as well. UK has two high school running backs coming in but one, Mizell, is coming off another injury so you wonder about his immediate impact potential. Right now it looks like Trayanum at the top and then anybody's guess for carries after that.

3. WR - One added, maybe two more to go. We know about some of the players to watch here. McCulley, Ja'Mori Maclin, perhaps Matthew Golden if he doesn't go to Texas, and some others. I feel strongly about Kentucky adding another and it should really boost the unit. I could still see them adding three receivers in total. If they pair Cottrell with the guy who I think they are in good shape for, I am not sure if another receiver add would be a developmental guy (long-term play) or an immediate impact. Becomes harder to get the splash impact guys the more you have already added.

4. TE - There has been quite a bit of attrition with Izayah Cummings and Jordan Dingle leaving, and of course Brenden Bates moving on. That means Josh Kattus and Khamari Anderson are probably in line to play quite a bit next year. I think you can make a strong case they are the two best prospects moving forward but losing Dingle does hurt their pass-catching at the position. Willie Rodriguez is coming up and I think he's the kind of guy who could conceivably play as a freshman because of his physicality and approach. I don't think they will add a tight end, but depth could be something to watch next year whereas the last couple of years it certainly was not. I'm just not sure it will rise to the level of a portal priority given other needs. They also won't need tight ends as much to cover up a lack of depth at receiver and could run a deeper WR rotation and keep more on the field.

5. OT - Need one. If Courtland Ford elevates his game then it's totally conceivable that he and Marques Cox could hold down the starting tackle positions for the whole season. Malachi Wood and Austin Ramsey are a couple of guys that they apparently feel pretty good about. Remember, Dylan Ray has the flex ability to kick out to tackle, but he was a mainstay at guard this year and that's probably where he is more likely to be. Kentucky lost a couple of its developmental tackles before last year (Deondre Buford, David Wohlabaugh). In an ideal world they would be able to add another player like Cox who could be around for multiple years. It will be interesting to see if its as easy to find a Marques Cox this year when there is a little more uncertainty as to the starter on the right side. Will be a lot easier to find a guy with 2-4 years not expecting to start than someone who knows he would come in and start for a year or two.

6. OG/C - Could use one. There just is not a lot of depth right now. Is Paul Rodriguez going to be ready to play next year? We heard that he was someone who could be a guy this year but he didn't get an opportunity. Tough with so few snaps. It was Cox, Burton and Ray in the iOL spots and they return, but you could definitely see them adding someone.

6. DL - TBD. I don't see a huge need here. You think about someone like Dinkins going into the portal to get more playing time. He landed several P5 offers. That tells you something about who Kentucky has on the DL. They could conceivably add another longer-term piece like Silver but other positions seem to be the priority. Anwar Stewart may have the team's best position group on paper as it stands.

7. LB - Could use at least one. I do see a need here. JJ Weaver could theoretically return for another season but even so, you would like to add some pass rush help. Keaten Wade didn't give them much pass rush but they needed to upgrade that regardless of what he did. Alex Afari will play more in Wade's absence but they aren't identical players. There are some younger linebackers like Rayner, Matthews, Fearbry, and I think Fearbry could reasonably be expected to step up as a starter next year but whatever pass rush help they can add, they should add. Problem is it's just going to be so competitive for those guys.

8. DB - Could use one or two. De'Carlos Nicholson is obviously one that would help them. He had an OK season for Mississippi State. Staff knows him very well. Would hit the ground running and could be expected to play a lot. May not be a lockdown corner but he has really good length for matchups, better length than they had this year. If you add Nicholson that might be it at corner. I know folks have their opinions on JQ, Dunn, and Robinson, but those are the kinds of players that you do have to keep and develop. Guys don't come in as good as they are going to be and they didn't really have a pass rush this year. I could see them adding a safety as well but with Childress returning and Ty Bryant emerging you once again have a three-man rotation as you did coming into this past year.

9. Specialist - Punting is going to be in focus after the way things ended this past offseason and I'm sure Jay Boulware is going to devote a lot of time to it.

Football Impact Analysis: Woodward out as WR coach

Yesterday we posted that Kentucky had announced a job vacancy for an assistant football coaching position. Football Scoop then released news of Kentucky moving on from Scott Woodward at WR coach.

Woodward and OC Liam Coen have obviously known each other a long time and came in together in 2021.

UK's wide receiver room has seen a lot of turnover in terms of the men coaching the room:

Tommy Mainord
Lamar Thomas
Jovon Bouknight
Michael Smith
Scott Woodward

The question now is if Mark Stoops will be making any other changes to the staff. Remember, there are going to be several areas that he's evaluating in making these changes:

- How the unit is functioning in the overall offense/defense in terms of communication and execution
- Development of players in that room
- Track record of recruiting success
- Maybe a player you want/need to keep around wants that coach to stay

Could go on but you see that the stay/go decisions for Stoops could be based on a number of things.

Woodward was credited with some of Kentucky's recruiting successes in Tennessee. He was the position coach during a stretch of recruiting success at the position. You think about the guys they brought in from the portal and HS during Woodward's time on staff: Wan'Dale Robinson, Barion Brown, Dane Key, Tayvion Robinson, etc., and they've drawn other talented commitments. There's an open question as to how much to credit each individual coach for those players, but we also have to recognize that it's the NIL era and that's a bigger factor than it used to be, while the assistant coach himself is probably less important in a lot of situations.

Overall it's hard to escape the lack of development at the receiver position. I'm always hesitant to criticize assistant coaches because none of us see what goes on day in, day out, and there's always a lot of factors in play.

But at the end of the day Woodward had more of a quarterback background coaching wide receivers and one of the big themes of this season is the wide receivers did not develop as well as they should have. Wan'Dale had a tremendous year because he was an elite player who was plus-plus in almost every category other than size. The last two years the wide receiver room has not been at the level Stoops wanted it. We heard folks talk about a lack of separation and the drops were on display for all to see.

I've said for a long time that I think the dynamic was less than ideal. If those guys had come into the program in 2021 when Wan'Dale was around and saw the standard that he set for how hard you have to work, how single-minded you have to be, then it would have been good. But they came in on the heels of Wan'Dale and didn't have that leadership in front of them. They were thrust into a position of having to be the guys right away. It didn't go well for Tayvion last year and then this year with all the second stringers leaving in the transfer portal there was not a lot of competition. UK threw almost entirely to three receivers all season long, in part a reflection of the depth situation, in part because they didn't run many plays overall, but the receivers left a lot of yards and points out on the field. It was a big reason for Leary having the kind of season he did, although you can't absolve him of his own share of it.

I think in the NIL era Stoops is probably thinking he's got an OC who has been able to attract plenty of QBs and WRs so you keep that, NIL is still probably the biggest recruiting factor there.

So who does Mark Stoops hire as a WR coach replacement? The job posting is set to expire 12/6 but I wouldn't read anything into that, he's got his own plan and candidates. I will post names if I hear some, but this is one of the staff changes that everyone probably speculated was possible.

In my view the WR room needs a couple of guys from the portal. There is plenty of talent in the room, but there's a big need for development.

Of course we also have to remember the portal here. When a position coach leaves, it could prompt a player or two to consider the portal. Barion Brown is someone Woodward had a hand in recruiting to Kentucky along with Coen and Eric Wolford. He's had his splash moments for sure but hasn't developed into the kind of player you can automatically assume is going to generate a certain amount of production and there are probably a lot of things to consider.

Football Impact Analysis: Losing Linebackers

Kentucky has had a very big linebacker class for a while. They've needed it given the losses this year stacked on top of the losses from last year. But whenever you have that many commits at one level it's going to prompt some questions. Becomes harder to keep everybody on board, especially when guys have really good options.

So Lorenzo Cowan decommits on the heels of a visit to Southern Cal, not long after Elijah Groves decommitted and later picked NC State.

In effect, Kentucky has lost a couple of really athletic, quick & twitchy EDGE guys in favor of the bigger EDGES they have added since - Jacob Smith and Brian Robinson in particular. Now not all of those guys were slated to play the same position but I do think that's a part of the story.

One of the things about that massive linebacker class Kentucky had put together (which also includes Devin Smith, Antwan Smith) is that it was heavy on traits. Some of the guys might not be recognized as plus-plus in every part of their game, but they had some really pronounced traits which made it easy to imagine them becoming breakout players after 2-3 years of development. A couple of those guys are now gone. But the reality is, it's going to be hard to keep a bunch of young guys in one room for several years in the portal era now. In my view with Cowans and Groves it's almost more like losing "the rights" to a player who is considered a prospect at the professional level. Really, they're just developing now, and we'll see where their careers take them. If they were to ever enter the portal - increasingly very common, even for good players who don't see the field after their true freshman seasons - you have to figure they will be guys would might strongly consider Kentucky in the future.

I do feel like Groves is the bigger loss because that would have probably ensured you're getting his brother, a '25 running back with several Power Fives already, and there's a third Groves brother coming up through the ranks.

If I had to guess I'd imagine that Kentucky does not really need replacements for these couple of decommitments. It seems like the bigger priority would be taking those scholarships that would have been spoken for and devoting them to building up the linebacker room via the portal. Of course they have lost Keaten Wade. He played about 75% as often as Alex Afari but it was usually a zero-sum game with he and Wade; if one played, usually the other didn't. So you have to replace Wade but Afari can play more. The difficult thing is finding a good EDGE defender in the portal. You may be able to find one but it's going to be really tough to get an elite pass rusher because they're in such high demand.
