CBS tidbit on Calipari’s game tonight versus ranked Michigan

After the UT game concludes, a matchup that appears more competitive on paper will tip, at which point Calipari will need to guide the Razorbacks to an upset of Michigan or else they'll drop to 7-3 on the season, including 0-3 against top-85 opponents at BartTorvik.com.

Needless to say, that would not be ideal for Calipari considering Arkansas was ranked 16th in the preseason Associated Press Top 25 poll — but also because the third loss would come to a fellow first-year coach at a new school whose team wasn't supposed to be as good as Calipari's, and also because the third loss would come just three days after Calipari's old school, Kentucky, upset Gonzaga and improved to 8-1 with its own first-year coach, Mark Pope, who now has UK ranked fifth in the AP Top 25 poll.

David Sisk Request

David, thanks for the reviews you post as I've really enjoyed the analysis. I've followed basketball and the Cats for 60 years but never played the game at a high level. Nonetheless, I felt as though I could at least follow the game with some degree of confidence. But the terminology being used now is getting the point that I really don't know what anyone is talking about. Zoom Action, REM cut, NASCAR cut, and these are just a few of the new terms being thrown out. I love Pope's press conferences but I'm lost every time he talks about specifics.

Would it be possible for you to put together a list of terminology being used now with Pope with a brief explanation of what they mean? Either that or just a brief note on the terms you use in your reviews as I'd like to try and follow along with more understanding.

Thanks your your consideration.

The fourth matchup is between the number two seed, A Christmas Story, and the 10 seed, A Muppet Christmas Carol.

Based on the humorous writings of author Jean Shepherd, this beloved holiday movie follows the wintry exploits of youngster Ralphie Parker (Peter Billingsley), who spends most of his time dodging a bully (Zack Ward) and dreaming of his ideal Christmas gift, a "Red Ryder air rifle." Frequently at odds with his cranky dad (Darren McGavin) but comforted by his doting mother (Melinda Dillon), Ralphie struggles to make it to Christmas Day with his glasses and his hopes intact.

The Muppets perform the classic Dickens holiday tale, with Kermit the Frog playing Bob Cratchit, the put-upon clerk of stingy Ebenezer Scrooge (Michael Caine). Other Muppets -- Miss Piggy, Gonzo, Fozzie Bear and Sam the Eagle -- weave in and out of the story, while Scrooge receives visits from spirits of three Christmases -- past, present and future. They show him the error of his self-serving ways, but the miserable old man seems to be past any hope of redemption and happiness.

I know we did this at least once before the season started. And many were predicting 18-20 wins (some even less). I think now most have probably upgraded their expectations.

As a Statistician, I can't help but come up with my # predicted wins using estimated probabilities of winning each game.

Colgate 95% (I would have said 99% but we might play it without both PGs)
UL 90%
Ohio St (N) 80%
Brown 99%
Florida 75%
at UGA 65%
at MSU 60%
TAMU 80%
Bama 65%
at Vandy 65%
at UT 35%
Ark 85%
at Ole Miss 60%
USC 95%
UT 65%
at Texas 60%
Vandy 90%
at Bama 35%
at Okl 60%
Auburn 65%
LSU 90%
at Missouri 60%

So, my expected value calculation of wins/losses is 15.74 - 6.26, adding the current 8-1, then rounding that would put us at 24-7.

Did anyone else catch the ESPN graphic about UK's losing streak during the game Saturday night?

Granted I was half asleep and may have saw it wrong but I think they had a graphic showing "What was at stake" and said the Zags had a 3 game losing streak to top 5 opponents and UK had a 5 game losing streak to top 10 opponents. Is their fact checking that horrible or did they just flat out ignore the fact we beat their beloved Duke team 2 weeks ago who was ranked in the top 10 at the time?

Another metric to keep an eye on.

This isn't brand new news (about nine months old) but I don't recall us discussing it here. Replaces Jeff Sagarin's ratings, which Jeff retired. Bart seems like a stand-up guy. One day we'll see our own @Aike in an interview like this.

Our BOT is just as stupid

With the Calipari tenure and Stoops tenure falling apart. The two major sources of revenue the BOT chose to extend Barnharts contract to 2028. We still had till 2026 to extend him , but WTF, let’s do it 2 years early.
Why not wait and see how things unfolded?? We were clearly in deep decline in both programs.
I guess the reason we have a 44 million buyout for a 12 year tenured coach is he was just following the stupid contract given to him.
I just hope I live long enough to have an AD serious about winning in football.
We are stuck till 2028 with Barnhart.
We are stuck with Stoops till 2031.

OT: Proposed changes to 6A HS football playoffs in Arizona

This sounds a little wonky to me... We are very top heavy here. About 6 teams dominate yearly.
Does KY, now, do anything like this?

According to sources, the 2025 Open proposal, if passed by the AIA, would also change the 6A playoff bracket would work. It will start as a 20-team tournament with the top four teams receiving byes and automatically moving into Round 2 of the Open.

Seeds five through 12 would play in the first round. The winners of those four games would advance to the remaining eight-team Open bracket. The losers of those first-round games will go into the 6A playoff bracket and receive the top four seeds.

The thirteen through 20 seeds in that initial top 20 will play each other for the other four spots in 6A. So there will be two eight-team brackets that will play out the rest of the weeks for state championships -- and Open and a 6A.

Only schools receiving a bye at the conclusion of the regular season will be the top four seeded teams of the Open to avoid extending the season a week longer than usual.

Throwback: Who remembers the Matt Jones/Marc Maggard saga?

While browsing Twitter today, two Star Wars (I am a huge fan) bloggers that I follow, who both have credible sites, were fighting like cats and dogs, accusing one of stealing info and not crediting the other. However, it seems to be occurring more often between the two and I couldn't help but be reminded of the Matt Jones/Marc Maggard feud. Who here remembers that ordeal? It was around ten years ago if I remember correctly and for me personally, it provided a lot of comedy. I remember checking KSR back then to read disses against ole "Frosted Tips" more than for UK insight. It was also discussed quite a bit on this board and was related to the recruitment of some players (Patterson/Lucas, Eloy Vargas, etc). I just figured I'd see if any other RR members recall those "good ole days" lol

Off Topic: PSA for bourbon lovers

Meijer in Richmond has a seller specific single barrel of Green River. No age statement but it’s straight so it’s at least 4 years old, and 124.4 proof. Regular Green River is really good stuff, especially for the price, and they have bottles of this for $59.99. First time I’ve personally seen a Green River single barrel. I have the regular full proof and it’s excellent. Anyway, have at it.

All-SEC team

Raynor - 1st team, no brainer imo
B. Brown - 2nd team all-purpose, 1st team return, that sounds about right since it's mainly about his return skills
Eli Cox - 3rd team, you've GOT to be kidding me; he was manhandled multiple plays every single game; in no universe could he possibly be the 3rd team All-SEC center; imo, has not improved one bit since his FR year and the argument could be made he regressed
D. Walker - 3rd team, I've gotta say I think this is fair; was not the one-man wrecking crew we all thought he'd be; yes, he had to fight double teams and uncalled holding, but he's been touted as a top 15 NFL draft pick and there were not many games where he was dominant; his pedestrian year certainly surprised me as I thought he'd be a stud who spent half of his time in the opponent's backfield
