Some somewhat inside information (Hurley wasn’t offered the job + Big Z)

I’ve had some weird email conflict all year as in when I would login, I couldn’t post and instead got an error message that said something like, “email is already in use.” I didn’t want to deal with setting up a new email, registering that new email with Rivals, blah, blah, blah, but I finally got around to it. I have fully admitted in past posts that sometimes I’m serious with my posts and sometimes I post craziness (mostly due to constraints of physical health issues and being actually stir crazy). This is a post you can take as serious, but only as far as you want to believe me.

-My brother holds a high up position in nonprofit where he works directly with many of UK’s higher ups and has become somewhat of an acquaintance and friend of Pope. I’m not going to say who my brother is or who he works for because I didn’t ask his permission to post this. Anyway, he says the Hurley offer never happened. Mitch’s hiring priority hiring list was 1) Drew 2) Pope. Maybe there were other feelers out, but no other official offers or conversations. I don’t know what proof there has ever been exhibited to the contrary that Mitch did indeed make that absurdly large offer to Hurley, and maybe there was something as far as proof that I haven’t seen, but I kind of get tired of seeing the lore of a huge Hurley offer and being turned down by him as matter of fact on this board.

-As far as Big Z goes. Z did some volunteer work with my brother’s organization as part of getting eligibility. My brother described Z as essentially lazy or at least as not being proactive. Brother did say that he didn’t think charitable work really was much of a thing in Croatia and maybe that’s why Z navigated the situation the way that he did. My personal opinion after we have seen Z’s body of work the last two years is yea, he’s probably kinda lazy; highly talented, but not that motivated. I bring this up because of how often I see things like, “Cal doesn’t know how to use him.” And because some would still want him to come back here. I think Z’s as much his own worst enemy as anything and would have never worked on a Pope team.

Outside of those two things, I’m not going to claim to have insider information on much of anything else. I don’t know a thing about who’s being recruited seriously, what kind of money is being spent, who’s likely to come, anything like that. My brother and I don’t talk that much, don’t even live in the same state. I also think that really, really strong recruiting news is rare and that for the most part you have to have very close ties to a lot of people in the basketball world to truly know anything. Coaches aren’t going to just give away information, even to work friends, and what’s released or isn’t released is highly controlled. If I ever hear any other random tidbits I’ll pass them on.

Some Pro Day numbers

Johnson and Jackson ran 4.50 and 4.51 forty yard dash. That's pretty impressive and will be difficult to replace.

While bench press isn't everything, Ox (13!), Rybka (20) and Deone (22) did not impress. Maybe Walker is still dealing with his back injury. But Ox and Rybka - piss poor. Might explain our DL performance last year somewhat. A DL who only benches 225 13 times shouldn't see the field much, imo. By comparison, Eli and Marques Cox both did 25 and JJ did 26.

Mincey did 20 bench reps and ran a 5.89 40. Good lord, I thought we had better athletes than that.

Silas Demary (Georgia)

In the portal. Big, talented, strong, physical guard. 6-5, CG was only a sophomore last year. Would love to have this kid.
2 way player, averaged 13.5 ppg / 4 rpg / 3 apg / 2 steals.
Shot 38% from 3FG on 4.7 attempts per game
80% free throw shooter on 4.8 attempts.
Averaged 33 minutes per game his sophomore year this year.

Freshman year : 28 mpg / 9.7 ppg / 3.8 rpg / 2.5 apg / 1.4 steals per game.

Solid but consistent jump from freshman to sophomore year, if he makes another jump, All SEC is a definite possibility. Could he be the SEC player scheduled to have a Zoom meeting with UK ?

vs UK 14 points (on 5 shots / 2/3 from 3 / 8/8 ft) 4 rebounds / 3 assist / 1 steal / 1 block
Last 5 games :
Gonzaga - 15/2/4 2 steals
Oklahoma - 24/3/3 2 steals / 5/12 from 3.
Vandy - 15/2/1 3 steals / 1 block
Texas - 26/4/1 2 steals / 3/6 from 3.
SC - 16/8/4

Other notable games :
Marquette - 10/7/4 3 steals / 1 block
St. Johns - 15/4/2
Miss. State - 23/6/7
@ Texas A&M - 19/3/4
Missouri - 18/3/4 3 steals
@ Auburn - 18/3/4 3 steals
Florida - 21/3/3

Kam Williams from Tulane 6'-8" commitment

Just read per Justin Rowland that this young man has committed to UK. Shooting 41% from deep on 150ish attempts. 9 points per game. Not a bad backup piece that could develope. Ansley Almanor replacement was mentioned in the article. GBB

Anyone else trying to remain calm?

There are a ton of what ifs going through my head right now about today. Part of me feels like we'll go off from deep and bury Illinois. At other times I worry that Butler will take a hit in just the right (wrong) way to his shoulder. I worry that Pope might feel pressure from Cal going to the Sweet Sixteen and that he needs to match that. On one hand I'm also content, if it makes any sense, that we will immediately be focused on the portal should the season end today. I've been trying to nap to whittle away the hours before game time.

Basketball Kam Williams Analytics

Got on Torvik (fun website, check it out) and filtered thru analytics trying to find comps for Williams.

Criteria I used was >12 dReb rate, >2oReb rate, > 7 ast rate, >2 steal rate, >3 block rate, > 40 made 3’s, >100 3’s made, > 35% 3 point to see what kind of archetype he fit into.

The ones who matched up along with Kam were ‘22 Keegan Murray, ‘18 Mikal Bridges, and ‘25 Rasheer Fleming. He has the lowest FT rate by far out of the group (couldn’t find any near his low FT rate even when tinkering other #’s) and lowest usage. But that is the kind of thread of player Kam is.

Autism

I’m sure a few people around here have already been in the same position as me, my son was diagnosed about a year ago (he’s about to turn 5 in April).

We first noticed his speech delays and promptly enrolled him in the “First Steps” program available through the state of KY. He has also been participating in some behavioral therapy since October of 2024 after we got his diagnosis in January of the same year.

What are some of the best practices or strategies that you know of when trying to be a parent? He’s really taken off with his development over the past few months and is really smart for his age, yet he often struggles with the social aspect of life.

Thanks for any advice or input into this process, sometimes it feels as if you’re on an island by yourself when dealing with these things.
