it hasn't been a full year yet - something could still be out there yet to be discoveredYeah Kentucky really didn’t meet any kind of demise similar to Memphis. When he left Memphis they were getting popped for D Rose and even still the fans and administration was begging for him to stay.
Kentucky’s demise at the end of the Cal era was more of a cultural implosion as a result of him
Staying. The fans were largely done and the AD wanted him gone but couldn’t realistically move him.
Basketball wise we didn’t suffer a lasting demise at all. A few months after it all went down we are still sitting here in top 10 with a bright future.
What we saw was the demise of Cal, not Kentucky.
I recall the 72-73 team well because it was my junior year at UK. I remember us playing Alabama at Memorial Coliseum when they were pretty damn good with Ray Odoms, Reggie Cleveland, Leon Douglas, Wendel Hudson and Wayne Garret. We had beaten them at Tuscaloosa earlier that season and this was a huge game because then, you had to win the SEC in order to get an NCAA bid. I recall a friend of mine saying that we should put Stamper on Hudson, a guy who couldn't shoot from beyond about 10 feet, but feasted on offensive rebounds due to his athleticism. He thought Stamper would muscle him into submission. Joe B didn't have to resort to that because UK put it all together that night and as I recall, UK ran off the first 20 points of the game until Bama scored. I'm not sure, but I believe the final score was about 108-89. The game wasn't really that close either. We later had to beat UT in Lexington in our final league game to win the SEC. I remember that Stamper and Lyons both played well late in a very close and tense game that I think we won 86-82.My friends ... "old-timers" is a relative term ! It pleases me to no end to see some of you who were really too young to remember the '78 National Champs refer to yourselves as "old-timers." ! I, too, feel obligated to click whenever I see a reference to "old-timers" ... but that might be because I first saw a U.K. basketball game in person on January 30, 1954. I was 7 years old. U.K. beat Vandy in Nashville, 85-63. Frank Ramsey had 24 and Cliff Hagan had 22 ! Great stuff ! ! !
That was the year that U.K. went 25-0, and then declined an invite to the NCAA Tournament because the NCAA wouldn't let Hagan and Ramsey play in the tournament because they were grad students.
I was raised in southern Kentucky and we lived a lot closer to Nashville than to Lexington, so my father took me to several U.K. vs. Vandy games over the years. I remember the U.K. - Vandy game the next year, too - because that was Bob Burrow's first year at U.K. Some of y'all will remember that Burrow was a two-time first-team All-American at U.K. in '55 and '56. He transferred to U.K. from Lon Morris Junior College - a little Methodist school in Jacksonville, Texas.
Lots of U.K. memories ! I'm sure glad I've gotten to see Mark Pope take the head coaching job ! ! !
Go 'Cats ! ! !
He definitely did not shoot enough during the SEC and NCAA tournament. Reeves and Dillingham both shot over 44% too, for the season. Dilly was a volume-shooter and mostly played together with Reed on the floor … only one ball. The fact that he didn’t even get up enough attempts to be a season qualifier in 3pt shooting will probably never not be enraging when I think about it.
We have scored 10 touchdowns in 8 SEC games …Welcome to the SEC - Where Football Matters
I agree … Boley should start. You start Boley
You take snaps from Brown. Maclin and Ferrier are better.
You run Wilcox till he can’t run.
I believe Kuester went 21/21 from the line. If he had missed one or two front ends, UK probably wins a Natty.I also remember this game as well. UNC played a great first half and led 53-41 at the half. UK came out as a different team in the 2nd half. UNC went to the 4 corners with 15 minutes left in the game. UK continued to chop away at the lead and got it down to 1-2 points with a minute or two left. UNC hit FTs and sealed a win that I still despise to this day. For the game UNC shot 33-36 from the line while UK was 16-18. Steve Krafcisin and John Kuester combined to score 27 points with 21 of those points were FTs. SMH!
Depends on if it comes with a certificate of authenticity.
It’s a strange thing to observe and you mentioned it. You said you knew we weren’t going to fire him and all you could do was hope for the best. That was me all the way. It’s how I’m wired. I simply can’t wish things into existence so I don’t try. I just try to cope with what’s available. The fanbase to me has a major disconnect with fans who take this stance. It’s almost as if to say if a person can’t match my rage then they must be my enemy. We all have one thing in common, we are all huge UK fans. We all want to win. But when a situation becomes so far out of the control of the fans then to me, you just have to roll with it. That doesn’t mean I’m happy with where we are or happy with the coaches.Yeah, I hear you Rockfly. I defended him also, for much longer than he deserved. During those last 3 seasons, I wasn't happy with the product we were getting. I just felt since I knew we weren't going to fire him mid-season, I would just support the team and hope for the best. That was my approach until we finished with a first round loss to Texas A&M in the SEC-T followed by that Oakland loss. I had an outside hope that with the talent on that team, they could make a run. And there is no questioning the talent on that team. But in the end, all that talent was just the final nail in his coffin. My thought became- if he can't get out of the first round of the SEC or the NCAA tournaments with this team, he will never do it.
At that point, the REAL issue wasn't player personnel, assistant coaches, and it certainly wasn't the fans. The problem was John Calipari, and he had to go.
I remember that as THE most frustrating UK game I've ever watched. I also remember it exactly the way you do. Many who saw that team might not agree with me, but I thought that 1977 team with LJ was a better team than the 1978 team that won it all. That team was just so good at ball movement and Shidler was much better that year as a starter than he was as a sub in 1978. I thought LJ's presence made us much better defensively and much quicker than the 78 team with Macy running the point. Yes, I know Macy was an AA, but I just think that team was better and had there been a 30 second clock in 1977, we would have beaten UNC and gone on to win it all.I also remember this game as well. SMH!
man I really hope they don’t do that…talk about completely bastardizing the game with a stupid rule to “fix” something that isn’t broken. Much less who gets to decide what is “challenged” or not. There are varying levels of challenging and that’s highly subjective. Also encourages more ppl to not jump and challenge the dunk more than anything…not only do you risk a foul but also giving an additional point by challenging. If you hate that the game is so 3 pt dominant now and the big man has been neglected you’d be better off removing the 3 pt line or backing it up another 3 feet
