Zion's Classes at Duke this Semester

As an Old Man, I try my best to not be that guy who shakes his head and says: "Our country is headed to Hell in a Handbasket."

College Studies?? At a premier University?
...Sexual Pleasures of the Modern World
...History of Hip-Hop
...Copy of Writing 101: The Disney Version

"Then there’s the “Copy of Writing 101: The Disney Version” class, which focuses on studying classic Disney films and then conducting semiotic analysis on them. It’s a course his mother, Sharonda Sampson, remembers Zion constantly raving about.

“You’re not watching it from a kid’s perspective,” says Zion. “You’re watching it [looking for] what signs is Disney giving away, what are they trying to promote here? From a racial standpoint, from a political standpoint—are they trying to prove something to the world? With The Princess and the Frog—a black princess…you don’t see that very often so that was a message.”

Wtf?

Dear lord. On the one hand, I want to laugh uproariously at his attempts to legitimize those classes. On the other hand, I’m glad they don’t quote our guys doing the same thing.

True.

Kentucky doesn't proclaim itself a top 15 academic school featuring a fan base or coaching staff that prides themselves on winning "the right way" through academic elitism.

If UK guys are doing the same thing, I'm all fine with that, but Kentucky has never pretended to be the Hard of the South.

This shouldn't surprise anyone if you have ever read, The Myth of the Student Athlete. How many of these classes were taught by the Duke coaching staff?

Outside the Lines: Zero Percent, supra note 314 (describing courses offered in the past at Duke University, including Theory and Practice of Coaching; History of the Atlantic Coast Conference Basketball; Ethics of Sports; Sports Marketing of Collegiate Athletic Events).

Yet Duke fans crucified UNC over their AFAM classes?

Pot meet kettle.

LOL!

I don't remember classes like that ever being offered when I went to college.

My Freshman year at WKU I think I took English, American History (two classes), American Government, Geology, Human Geography, Anthropology, Health, and Psychology.

I remember giving my buddy grief for taking Astronomy, because It was considered a bunny class!

Honestly this is kind of awesome. You know he doesn’t give a shit about a degree and definitely doesn’t need to, so he took some genuinely interesting classes. The classes honestly sound pretty awesome and the history of Hip Hop class was taught by a known music producer. It seems he actually enjoyed these classes and put effort into them, I think that’s pretty great.

My thoughts exactly

Let’s please stop pretending that premier basketball players care about academics, it’s just foolish. College is a scam anyway, these classes probably cover necessary humanities credits. Gen-Ed’s, humanities, BS degrees, outrageously priced, etc

College is worthless except for STEM classes, and those are getting iffy. Before you all get all huffy, theres a reason science is having trouble with reproducable results. The drive for professors to publish mean they just use statistics to data mine, then write up an article about what they found. It's not science, it's statistics, and scientist are just as bad at math as everyone else. Ex) 100% of people who eat carrots, die. Some don't even need to eat carrots, just their food is near carrots. You get a big enough sample size, you can prove anything.

If a doctor is wrong, you could loose 1 person. If an engineer is wrong, you could loose millions.

I went to WKU as well. I remember getting pumped to take "Astro-bunny" because I was looking forward to at least one easy class. Unfortunately, I drew the head of the dept teaching it who was out to dispel that rumor. Ended up with a C in the class that required 40 pages a night of reading and tests that had physics/calculus questions on it related to astronomy calculations. Yeah, times have changed.

Actually the Dukies DEFENDED UNC throughout the academic cheating scandal. Crap like this is exactly why. Lower admission standards for football and basketball players, streamlined degree programs allowing fast track graduation, etc. Its also why the NCAA wants to stay out of the academic side. How hard is hard enough?

But seriously, the RIGHT thing for all big time programs to do is design some classes around money management, investment, even simple banking and agent relationships. THAT would serve not just these future pro athletes but frankly all students better in the long run.

What a load of bullshit lol

UK classes are way more legit. The only course I can remember from my college days that would compare to this is Dinosaurs and Disasters.

It has much more to do with the fact that a college would even offer this garbage, let alone a "premier university". No one expects top flight athletes to truly care about college courses, but for the love of God, don't make a mockery of what college used to be.

Freshman and sophomore level classes in college are a cakewalk anyway. Which is why I always get a kick out of comments about all our guys who “hate school.” No longer than they’re here school is a cakewalk. You don’t get into the relevant meat of your college courses until you get into your major/graduate level courses. Which none of these guys ever do. So why do we pretend to give a shit about what level 100 or 200 level classes they take? None of it matters.

Most college degrees are absolutely useless. I’ll never make my kids feel forced to go to college like most of us were. I’ll encourage trade school, military, and only college if they want to do something in the medical, law, or engineering fields.

I’ve been around college athletics enough to know what a joke it is. It’s actually embarrassing that these players even get to attend college because most couldn’t pass 8th grade if they weren’t just sent on through.

Watch Last Chance U to further prove my point about the lengths colleges go to in order to get someone eligible.

Not to mention, you can bank on major academic fraud occurring with athletes when it comes to online courses.

Say it ain't so. But, these parents want their sons to go to Duke because it is such a premier academic facility. I can see why they wouldn't want to send them to UK with such classes as English 101, American History, along with a science and math course. I mean who would want to waste your time with those, when you could study the history of hip hop, and Disney movies? What hypocrisy.

I was thinking the same... how many OAD parents (esp moms) have proclaimed how important the education their son would get at Duke was soooooo important?
ALL colleges have bunny classes, if you know the right people. Also, it’s helpful to break up the stress classes.
When I was at UK there were many bunny classes BUT they were typically only 1 or 2 credit hour...so you couldn’t load up.
And of course, only so many could apply to degree... so it was pointless to take a lot of them.
But if you are never planning on a degree, of course most people will take the path of least resistance. Who wants to better themselves, with a little bit of study and work?
Unless momma said your going to prestigious Duke for the right reasons. Smh

You're right. It has been a long time since I attended UK, but you didn't get a lot of choices as a freshman. You had English Composition, American History, and a math course required. there were some easy courses, but like you said, they were 1/2 hour, or 1 hour credit, and they didn't apply to graduation hours. I just can't believe that there are actually courses like this, let alone a freshman being able to take all of them. In my time, "underwater basket weaving" was the joke, but it would be infinitely tougher than what Zion took. Just goes to show that Duke has no shame.
