If Kentucky was paying players during this time, we haven't been doing a good job of it. Plus, we've dodged over a dozen recruits in the last few years.. the exact ones that are looking for a handout or come with trouble.

I'm sure Cal isn't 100% squeaky clean.. but I also know no coach is more scrutinized than him, and EVERYONE, NCAA incldued, was trying to find dirt on him. And they found nothing. He made a business model that sold itself: getting players to the NBA.

You don't really need to pay players when you can offer someone else's perfectly legal money. It's a brilliant strategy.

Agree. I know it drives us all crazy when most of our players leave early, but that is the trade off for us to field a competitive team every year without cheating our asses off.

This is pretty much close to my view of Cal at UK. I’m not willing to go as far as to say Cal’s squeaky clean, but I also suspect that he knows how to stay within the gray areas without crossing the types of clear lines that land you in trouble.

Even if Cal wanted to, I don’t believe he can afford to do that at UK. Pat Forde spent a significant amount of time traveling around Alabama trying to find dirt on Bledsoe while Thamel went all the way to Turkey looking for stuff on Kanter. I can’t recall any other school receiving that level of scrutiny from the national press. The only one that comes close is UNC and all of the good work that Dan Kane was doing for the News & Observer.

I also believe that given Duke’s and Coach K’s stature, I’d be very surprised to find out that Duke (or its partners / representatives) was blatantly paying players. Without more hard evidence to the contrary, I suspect that Duke probably was sticking to the gray areas too. Duke may have been more aggressive about it, but I still have a hard time seeing them cross those kinds of lines.

I personally don’t expect much to come of this request for Zion. It’s overly broad and the questions lack the specificity you might expect from someone who knows firsthand that violations occurred. To me, it reeks a bit of a fishing expedition and PR stunt.

no, you saw that duke was getting some good hype on ESPN and then looked up how many championships duke has and then swung your dick around. Then you went and bought a duke hoodie, and put #lakers and #duke in your twitter bio.
Lol literally none of this is true. I have a good amount of Duke gear but no hoodie.

When did you start watching Duke sports and is it just Duke basketball or are you also a Duke football fan?
I remember watching Duke a ton as a kid because of my dad. The first full memory I have of a game was when I was 10 and Duke lost the championship game in 99.

Big Duke football fan. Went to any Duke sports games/matches when I was in grad school there.

Always appreciate your takes. Your perspective(s) on these eligibility issues are certainly intuitive----I still respectfully disagree with ur take (u proved to be correct :)) on the UNC case---really felt like the NCAA could/should/did have the authority to punish them for their academic/eligibility fraud). That said, I don't doubt there is an effort to bring about some sort of settlement/via PR pressure, but the RFA about the house seems pretty specific to me. Do you not feel that particular RFA would lead to discoverable info? Perhaps this agent negotiated or played a role in securing the house for Zion and his family? Perhaps the agent helped "hide" the transaction for the benefit of Zion and his family? One would surely think this attorney has info to support this "accusation"?

Someone else brought it up - this will go to settlement which the terms will include sealing the documents. At the end, the NCAA won’t have access to them and frankly they hope they will not have said access
Hell that worthless ass twerp Emmert could have the documents in a envelope on his desk right now and the gutless worm wouldn’t open it !

The problem for me is that Duke was never getting these type of recruits, because for decades they have been the preppy white school that a lot of HS recruits just couldn't get into. And many who just didn't WANT to do to a school like that. And then overnight, the guy who has the best business plan (Cal), and is offering the fastest route to the NBA, starts losing recruits to Coach K and Duke? To me, Cal's "deal" for this kids was perfect. How in the world could Coach K have topped that, when he was unproven with 1AD recruiting, WITHOUT offering something more.

You don't leave your bank to go the one across the street simply because it has the same interest rates. You leave because they are offering something better. Something needs to pull you there.

A couple things happened. First the title in 2010 helped a lot. Putting K’s name back on top and giving him his fourth title. Second the USA basketball coaching and relationships with NBA stars helped a ton.

As far as K being “unproven” in OAD, he had coached OAD’s just not more than 1 before 2015. Also the top rated kids, surefire OAD’s, are very confident in themselves and the fact they are pros. They think they will be a successful OAD no matter where they go so you’re not really selling them on that.

So as a Duke fan do you know anything about the history prior to 99? I am just asking because most UK fans know players and teams prior to when we actually started watching. My earliest memories are from the late 70's but I know all about the teams with Rupp's Runts in '66, the Fiddlin Five in '58, the Fabulous Five in '48 and many other teams like the Issel led teams who didn't win titles. It is good to hear you support Duke sports not just Duke basketball because to me those are the worst fans no matter the team. To support different teams in different sports is the definition of a horrible fan.

.. and Cal won a title 2 years later. I'm not sure winning the title matters much here. Olympics certainly do, that's definitely a factor.

But either way, there is too much smoke here. Too many people are suspecting foul play with Duke and Zion (and Bagley for that matter). There might never be a true punishment.. and that's fine. Because all the other schools that didn't get punished (yet).. UNC, Kansas, UofL.. all their recruiting went in the crapper for several years. Same thing will likely happen to Duke. When you have to stop relying on benefits, your recruiting falters.

Bagley’s dad was paid by Nike, not Duke. There’s been zero actual evidence that Zion received money. I know UK fans really want this to be true, but so far there’s zero actually evidence that Duke is providing illegal benefits to players.

If that is your defense^^^^, why is the NCAA now going after other schools who used the same scheme? Adidas paying players to go to certain schools?

Doesn’t matter. That makes him an ineligible player. Y’all should be familiar: Maggette, Duhon, Bagley and Zion. Just to name a few.

Rules for other coaches at other schools not named UNCheats and Puke. This won't be big news on ESPN either. These institutions are the real untouchables.

I do find it funny that the Williamson clan was seeking money from Kansas according to wire taps and that Kansas was willing to pay them. However they had some sort of epiphany and decided to go to Duke for nothing even though they were living in a million dollar home. Only a Duke fan would believe that is true.

Are you stupid?
Did that house just pop out of the ground like a mushroom and the Williamson’s moved in like smurfs?

No one from the Williamson was on a wire tap. It was a single vague comment by someone not associated with the family or Duke. Also people have thrown around the Williamson family home thing now like they have proof of anything, which they don’t.
