Who is our next OC?

Yeah, been completely underwhelming at Akron, but reading a bit more about him and his background, he'd be a good fit.

Either Moorhead or Stein would be good hires, IMHO.
Yeah...Akron is a tough place to win and I don't always evaluate how good someone is as a coordinator based on their head coaching record.

Crazy that since 2010, Akron has had 4 head coaches. 3 of them had/have the following records:

2-22
3-24
4-20

Joe Moorhead is 4-20 at a MAC school. we can make the argument about Coordinators not being good head coaches sometimes, but that's pretty abysmal. The most points they scored in a game all season was 31. They scored 27 points 3 times. One of those was a four OT game and another a two OT game. both losses. Not sure where all the love for him is coming from.
I get that. I worries me a little bit, but not a ton. I said this in a previous post, but 3 of the last 4 coaches had the following records at Akron:

2-22
3-24
4-20

The "good" record amongst those 4 coaches was Terry Bowden at 35-52.

I know Stoops was looking at James Coley at one point. He just took a job a USCjr as a WR coach.....would he want a promotion to leave a job he just took?
To some extent, if we hire from the college ranks at this point, some guys will have to leave positions they just took.

Why is Akron any tougher to win at than Toledo, Kent St., or Miami, OH?

Tim Couch might be an interesting option. We know he has a good relationship with Cutter Boley's family via LCA so at least Cutter sticks around. Also bleeds blue and will not leave the area for another job! He is a huge presence and would be dynamite on the recruiting trail.

Other than Couch not being interested in being a college coach, it’s a great idea.

I wouldn't throw Kent in there as they have an all time .394 winning percentage.

I couldn't tell you why a majority of coaches have struggled at Akron. Since they made the transition to I-A (now FBS) in 1987, they have had 7 winning seasons in 37 years.

My point was that I don't always correlate HC success to coordinator success.

Buster Faulkner*. GT OC
Knows BV. Elevated GT offense very quickly. similar scheme.

And Buster might stay a bit longer...

Rees would be a great hire, but I see him looking to be a HC sooner rather than later. And a guy that's been an OC at ND and Bama won't want to stay at Kentucky very long IMO.

He’s currently at Berrien Springs HS (second stint) in Michigan and is 82 years old.

But, I like your out of the box thinking.

I just think it could be a rough pull. I hear he is happy there.
I just posted to let that guy know who he was talking about. Uzelac still may be more creative than Stoops though.

Need a candidate that runs a pro style offense to avoid defections of key players like Vandagriff, and also to avoid going through a big transition to a new offense. Also we almost have to have a coach that played and can coach the QB position as that spot goes out the door with Coen as well. Who are the qualifiers?

Eddie Gran. He is already on staff and it's the perfect situation for Stoops to get his lapdog back on OC.

Akron is dead broke, all the MACtion are poor but the Zips are worst of the worst

Morehead is a candidate because of what he did at Oregon, as HC of Miss St, what he did at Penn St.

Oh hell no thank you on Coley. Great recruiting, would love him on staff, but a proven awful playcaller.

Brian Hartline will stay in Columbus even if he is demoted even more down to jock strap washer. No thank you on someone that low-T career aspirations, little D energy.

Johns was one of 2 finalists for the Iowa OC position and the majority of Iowa fans wish he were the choice.
Yeah, Lester did not do well at Syracuse. But his offense was ranked pretty good at WM. Maybe Johns working under him for a year was part of the reason for his success at Duke.

Is Dan Mullen an option. He's had good history with QBs in the past. Prior to Coen (part 1) I remember his name getting tossed around. Seems like him or Moorhead are on about the same level.

I think he would be a good choice if he is interested in being a coordinator again. I don't think he recruits well, but he is certainly a good play caller.

It's said Mullen hates recruiting and whomever takes that job better be able to recruit. Besides, Mullen has a cushy job now as a TV talking head.

Are there any NFL guys Stoops would reach out to? He seems to feel like running an NFL offense gives us a recruiting advantage we didn't have before. Everyone is looking at college coaches but the last two have been from the NFL. Any chance he reaches out to another QB coach or some other NFL guy to fill the spot?

Tommy Rees is awful. Watched every game he coached last year and it was bad.
I also watched every Alabama game last year and completely disagree with this assessment. If you look past the star ratings coming out of high school, the reality is that he had a QB who’s very limited in the things he does well, an offensive line that struggled at times in pass protection, and a receiving corps that was solid but lacked game breakers. He took that group and rather than forcing a square peg into a round hole, devised a scheme that played to their strengths and it got them to an SEC championship and within a hair’s width of a national championship. I thought it was a tremendous coaching job rather than an indictment of his abilities.

Problem is we're in the midst of NFL hiring season, happens every year in Jan-Feb so there will be options for these guys.

But to your question, I'd look at Jake Peetz, Rams passing game coordinator. He also interviewed for Bucs job. Continuity with Coen re formations/terminology would be similar.

College Football Network listed these five. Tommy Rees, Tyson Helton, James Coley, Bryan McClendon and Tee Martin. Said money will not be a problem with what we was paying Coen and we have to hit a homerun to keep our offensive players here. McClendon said to be a great recruiter. Helton's offense at WKU speaks for itself. Have been some head coaches taking assistant jobs in the SEC.

Didn't Reese just take a job with Browns?

Re Martin....no thanks.
