UNC Finished 2015 9-8; Lost Best All Around Player; Added No Elite Recruit

I'm not buying UNC either. I distinctly remember Tyler Ulis picking them apart. I went and checked, and indeed, that game is his career high in assists at UK. 8 assists in 24 minutes.

Kentucky and 7 others. Possibly 8.

SC, you didn't answer my question, who are those 7-8 teams better than UNC right now, preseason?

Again, I do not think anyone is pumping UNC to be an all time great squad or even a really good one. The current landscape of college ball kind of places them at least close to the top by default with their returning roster.

You're my boy BPoe, one of my favorite posters right there. We're like forum brothers or something, we'd be friends in real life I think. I agree with you on this too, UNC very well may be the 2nd best team in the nation. I just know they're nowhere close to 1st.

Agree brother, I hate to say us, but if our new kids can really play, especially Skal in the paint, it has to be us, and I think it will be, long before conference play.

It's going to be a very cohesive and unselfish team. I think this will be the most skilled team we've had (maybe a close second to last season), the highest basketball IQ, and possibly the most efficient and potent offense. I feel really really good about this teams chances. I think the overall talent of college basketball is a little down compared to last year. We got a few of the gems from a shallow pool of incoming talent, and some significant pieces and leadership returning. It's our to lose again, I really feel that way.

I never thought Tokoto was that great. His defense was overrated IMO.

Losing him will also help their shooting because everyone playing behind are all better shooters.

I think UNC looks good on paper but I just don't think Marcus Paige is the type of point guard that wins you a title.

He's a score first guy but he's also extremely streaky. If Roy can turn him into more of a distributor I think they'll be a problem, if not their ceiling is the E8 IMO.

I'm not a big fan of UNC, actually I strongly dislike them but although they aren't getting top 20 kids (outside of Jackson) Roy hasn't done a bad job getting top 100 players to maintain their competitiveness. If Pinson or Williams give them anything this year they should be one of the teams contending.

It's cool our mods will let you post here. You don't have to act as if this is your clown board full of 4 mods and dicktakerguy.

You are probably still proud we had slavery at one time. Oh and public segregation, that was cool too. Those coloreds don't need no real diplomas...

The issue isn't how great UNC is this year, the point is that as of now there are not that many really good teams to choose from.

Who else returned more quality players and who picked up enough new players?

Maryland, Iowa State, Kansas, and Virginia meet the first criteria.

UK and Duke the second. Ours is, yet again, based 99% on potential as Ulis is the only known commodity.

It doesn't bother me at all that UNC is given the nod at this point. It will be that much sweeter when the cheaters fail to back it up.

Poythress and Lee are not proven?

Poythress and Lee are not proven?
Proven what? Poythress is a good role player, and Lee has yet to show he is ever going to be any more than a bench player. We have to hope the freshman are really good because those two are definitely not leading us to anything.

yah because Briscoe, Skal and Murray are unkown's. (dws) LOL we've watched enough college basketball to know when players will come in and make big contributions right away and the three I just mentioned are known commodities. the only question is, will they be stars are anthony davis like super stars

Hahahaha

If Poythress can get his shot going, he'd be a lot more than a role player. Even if he had to take flat footed shots while coming back from injury, his shooting had to improve some.

As far as Lee goes, its all about his defense and ft's. He has to up his FT % because he's more than proven he can score around the rim and if he can just get to 60% ft's, that will allow us to play him a lot. I think his defense will be strong this year, i'm just worried about his FT's

We have no idea how well Alex will heal and Marcus has not shown starter production yet.

Depends on your definition of star.

I think Randle, KAT, Wall, Cousins, Knight, AD, MKG, and Noel were stars.

We had very good, serviceable freshmen, don't get me wrong. I think Murray has shown he will be a star and obviously Skal has tremendous potential. They all do. But it is still unknown, just like Cal says every year.. "I have no idea until I see them play, but I like my team.

Wasn't a joke. What have we seen from them to suggest otherwise? They will produce what we need from them to be successful, but if the freshman don't end up being really good, they aren't making up the difference. Hopefully they get there, but it would require a pretty significant jump that I dont think is reasonable to expect. At least in the span of a single offseason.

Maybe the way you said it was a bit off the mark.

Alex Poythress a role player? Na, not even close. Don't forget there's a huge segment of people who believe we missed the championship last year due to his absence. But just on his game alone, his defense alone makes him far more than a role player. I think he's far better than someone like Amile Jefferson, and he was one of the bigger reasons Duke won a championship.

Lee is lee, and right now he's a bouncy twig that can do a few things well to help. We'll see how much better his game develops but Poythress is a different matter. The Kansas game should have shown that.

Poy and Lee are legit. Some of you kill me. Lol

Alex Poythress a role player? Na, not even close.

Since when has Alex and Marcus been anything but role players?

Alex has great potential, if he has learned to dribble and make a jumper, of course an ACL can hinder progress. AD and Noel can be huge difference makers as defenders because they disrupt multiple players. A very good wing defender is not the same.

We have evidence of one game that Alex was THE difference maker and that was years ago in Atlanta. I was there and he was great, haven't seen the same kid since.

Marcus is legit what? Tall?

Every player is affected by every other player. When has Alex been effective? When he could attack the basket with abandon and wasn't called upon to create offense off the dribble. He had games as a freshman -- Duke, Missouri come to mind -- when he got isolated in a position to drive on the basket and overpower defenders, and he scored 20 or more points with extreme efficiency -- 8-10 FGs against Missouri, 9-12 FGS against Duke.

Kentucky's team this year is very favorable for him, with Ulis, Murray and Briscoe penetrating, drawing defenders, creating gaps and seams and attack lanes. If Alex is healthy, he could be a major offensive force on a team with teh guards UK has.

I do not disagree he can be effective. Touted as a legit difference maker is another thing. We can probably count on one hand how many times Alex took someone off the dribble.

Be great to see his confidence back in his jumper, and I can see your point on this team playing more to his style.

Good golly shucks, dadgummit, it's sure going to be Hell for you right soon. Fetch you a dime from Roy's dead momma and go buy you a Coker-Coler. Be sure to say hello to your cheating dead coaches Frank McGuire, Dean Smith, and Bill Guthridge. Ol' Roy will be joining you soon. Oh', lordy, the laughs all you cheaters will have! Maybe the fire will purge you of your lies. And maybe, just maybe, the TRUTH will finally set you free. You see, in Hell, there are no mirrors in which you can look into and lie to yourself.

But today is not that day, is it? Awwww..... shucks! Boy Howdy, the cheating Carolina Way will live on! Just like Cain in the Bible, the Carolina Way is not to be touched, but will forever have a mark upon it.

And will have the sanctions hanging over them all year yet somehow will be a popular choice for pre-season #1? No way that thrashy program deserves that kind of respect.

UK is CLEARLY the best team in the nation after adding Murray and Humphries to that great recruiting class. We have the best back court in the country and a top 3-4 front court. And our HOF coach "ain't" bad.

Darryl

I think anyone that know Basketball will agree if they are sincere in picking.

Oh' stop it. I'm not buying what you are selling. You are a liar and cheat just like your beloved university (if you can still call it that). I don't think many Nazis were as brainwashed or disillusional as the UNCheat fanbase. Take your best wishes and go put some flowers on Dean Smith's grave. That cheater needs all the help he can get.

when it gets late and no one is around, these UNC assholes lose their minds over this.

Getting on message boards helps them vent the anger, confusement, and frustration. Pretending you don't care (@gunslingerdick) is also a defense mechanism. But the pain is there every single day they awake. The school their families help build, love, and cherish was a lie on top of a lie on top of a lie.

A almost feel bad for the fans. They had no idea the "way" was about cheating for black athletes.

How embarrassing.

Had to highlight this because I really appreciate your observation on a key element that has gone largely unnoticed and it shows you are a student of the game. Jefferson's role in filling in for Okafor who was parked with foul trouble for long stretches was a critical factor. Jefferson only had 2 points but that also came with 7 rebounds, 3 blocks, a steal, 2 assists and most significantly of all played terrific defense on Kaminsky in the second half. People tend to only look at the point totals with players and often times overlook the importance that the role guys play. I think if Jefferson could develop a mid-range shot (which is available to him all the time when he's on the floor) he could really improve his scoring output and advance his game. There was a guy by the name of Antonio Lang (90-94) who was in a similar situation and he developed that mid range jumper and became a key part of that 1-2 punch with G Hill on that very thin 1994 squad that lost that thriller to Arkansas in the 94 NCAA Title game.

I still swear had Lang not trimmed his fingernails that day......

A couple points on Alex Poythress, I have always liked his potential and I was one who did ask the question, "what if Poythress were available to have guarded Dekker"? I think he can be really good for you guys and in a larger role than he played in previous seasons.

Smile and think the investigation that has tarnished the reputation of your beloved school and revealed it for the sham that it has been for more than 20 years. Let that light guide you for a while.

Shun1, you can love your university even if UNC gets hammered. We still love UK even though we got hammered in the 80's... but acknowledge your team cheated and demand your team be punished. If you don't, payback could be a b**ch .... because you UNC fans would be upset to high heaven and back if another team got away with cheating , winning 3 titles in that span, like 10 final fours and moved ahead of your program in terms of prestige.

Cal went after Amile at one point I think he is a very steady ballplayer. Good hustle plays, solid defense. Smart, glue guy.
