The coaches box technical Cal got vs us in 93...

Most people say it is an anti UK agenda. Funny thing is, everyone remembers the ones that go against us, but no one remembers the ones that go for us. Like poker, everyone remembers the bad beats they lost, but not the ones they won. A part of our fan base loves playing the martyr. The announcers, the media in general, the NCAA, the officials, everyone is against us. This call shows that this is not always the case.

The union of Cal and UK has created so much envy and animosity towards us by opposing fans, media, yes the ncaa, the officials, etc but still NO other coach I'd want. Has nothing to do with martyrdom and everything to do with being overly successful all the while being a cocky SOB about it. It rubs people the wrong way and Cal makes no apologies for it nor should he. If you haven't been paying attention over the years, I thought at least the 30 for 30 clearly explained this.

I think Cal brought that call up way back when he was first introduced. I think Pitino had been complaining about coaching-box infractions all game, and it finally paid off at the end. Completely bogus call.
It was a rap call but didn't come out of the blue. Lenny had warned him before that and I guess was looking for him to cross the line one more time. Just had no business affecting the game that way at such a crucial time.

I think Cal gets picked on because he is so vocal and demonstrative the whole game. Gotta admit he's a little annoying with the constant yelling. I think it wears on the refs and they get short tempered even though most of the time he's yelling at his guys and not them.

I hear this sentiment a lot, but I don't agree with it. Cal isn't in the same league w saint K, BK, or a host of others when it comes to saying stuff to refs. I have a friend who is a college ref and he told me Cal isn't known by refs as being one of the coaches who especially get on the refs. Does he do it? Obviously. But among coaches not exceptionally

That's what I was thinking as I read that post. K hardly even coaches his team at all during the run of play. Maybe in timeouts but while the clock is running he's running his mouth at the nearest ref the entire time!

You do not call that for one foot out of the box ever, especially late in a 2 point game from the other end of the court. Reminded me of how Roger Ayers got Cal down at Tennessee.
Just for austerity purposes, Cal had more than one foot out of the box...he was probably three feet out of the box. However, the call was terrible due to where the Lenny called it from.

I remember it well. I thought it was a bs call when he was the opposing coach. Just a terrible call. Totally looked as if the fix was in with that call.

Did anyone in this thread make note that it was 1992 and not 1993?[winking]

preacherfan- years ago didn't you live in Paducah? Always thought of you as a good poster!

I saw your winking smile, makes me think 1992-93 season. Here is my point the brief footage of this game shows Jeff Shepard dunking. Now best I remember Jeff played as a Freshman then Red-Shirted a season. Then Sheppard was MVP of Championship game over Utah in 98 season.. Have I got that part right?

Yep, I lived in Paducah from 2nd grade until I graduated HS. I went to Reidland and ran track, then cross-country in college.

As for Shep, he was MOP in 98. He sat out the 97 season. He was an incredibly valuable player in that title run.

This board is pretty much a diversion from other aspects of life. I have a LOT of fun here and laugh a lot. Some people take the board too seriously. For me, it is a lighter side. A week ago today I was involved in a highly emotional situation in which the remains of a young soldier who was killed in Korean was finally identified after 67 years and he was brought home. The family, whom I am close to, never gave up trying to bring him home.

People that take out their frustrations on refs personally have big issues. Yes it is ok to yell at them during games (part of the fun as long as it is "civilized"). BUT, there needs to be better ways to punish bad calls and what night by the people that "employ" them.

I was out the UK - WSU game in Indy this year and when one of WSU players went down injured and the refs stopped play, a group of UK fans got livid. The kid looked badly injuried and UK was just bringing the ball down the court (no real action). I yelled at the UK fans and was like "really" what if that was your kid.

People need to tone it down when attacking anyone involved. Be mad, be livid, yell and scream, but death threats, deep personal insults, come on, get a life.

By the way, I am as about crazy, jumping up and down and yelling as one can get, but i draw the line....

Oh boy, if that happened to us some UK fan would burn that refs house down. Kidding... kinda. What an atrocious call tho. We prolly still would've won but that call was horrific. I didn't even remeber that call, but if it had gone against us it would be talked about to this day.

Another thing I found interesting is that was the Sweet 16 game before the Duke game in the Elite 8 with the Laettner shot. That game was so close to not even happening.

I remember watching the game and at the time, that technical was critical for UK. Totally a bad call. We were very lucky

So true. We didn't notice it as much then because it benefited us. They've been doing that shat for a long time. Even one of the coaches (Calhoun?) commented what a terrible call it was and said something about wanting the Blue Blood to win there.

We noticed it. We (fans) discussed it. A lot.

We focused on Duke. Then played the greatest game ever.

OK i watched that game but forgot we were only up a few:
PHILADELPHIA -- Kentucky needed something to gets its second wind, to hold off an oncoming express train in ugly red uniforms. The Wildcats had watched their early 21-point lead evaporate, and Massachusetts was charging hard, trailing by two with 5 1/2 minutes left.

That's when Lennie Wirtz, who was officiating basketball games before John Calipari was born, stepped in and stopped the Minutemen cold. He called a controversial technical against the Massachusetts coach, and Kentucky was able to breathe again.

Starting with the technical on Calipari for apparently leaving the coaching box -- Wirtz was 50 feet away from the UMass bench when he called it -- the Wildcats went on an 11-2 run and broke away for an 87-77 victory in the NCAA East Regional semifinals at The Spectrum.

I remember thinking how lucky we were when they made that call. I also thought it was a terrible ticky tack call.

Think you missed my point. I don't think Cal gets on the refs as much as he's just loud and yelling at his own guys a lot. And that alone can get under refs skin. In this case I think it was an old veteran ref who saw Cal as this brash loud demonstrative new comer and he was going to reign him in and settle him down. Just picked a real bad time to do it and shouldn't have. He literally affected that game.

I don't think Cal does much of anything to anybody to make them dislike him, its just the brashness he shows (much more so back then) that rubbed everybody wrong. He was just the new hot thing that seemed to have everything going (the look, hipness, confidence, youth) and add in the brashness and he was an easy target.

Thanks preacherfan. Thank you for posting that! Prayers to the family who were able to have a burial for this Veteran in the USA.

I think there is something to this. CBS wanted a Kentucky/Duke regional final, we were up 22 in the 1st half of that game. UMass made a spirited comeback on us in the 2nd back and that tech was called with UK up 1 and a little over 3 minutes to go.
