I get all this. But one question I haven't seen answered...
What motivation does a NBA team/G-League affiliate have to offer one of these guys, spend a year grooming him to play in the NBA, taking minutes away from other legitimate prospects that you actually control, then losing him to the draft the very next year?
LOI only would affect going to another college. It doesn’t stop anyone from going to the G League!

All sports are on hold, they cancelled the NCAAT and a lot of important professional sporting events. Heck, they pushed the Olympics to next year.
I can see traveling overseas for important business, but I don't foresee anyone allowing players to travel abroad to play sports. I don’t think anyone is willing to stick their neck out and say "Yeah, let's do it" .
It's extremely difficult to predict anything at this point. The modern world hasn't been through anything like this.
You think Cal would have known this would/could happen? When? Clarke has been a UK commit for a long time.
But even if Cal knew, what would he have done differently?
And it's only a matter of time before G-league recruiters start flapping $80,000-$125,000 cash payouts to nearly all of the Top 40. I can foresee there being some kind of tiered payment offer system based on some ranking someone threw together, thus rendering half or more of those top 40 kids forgoing college for money they could make working full time in a grocery store.
You know these kids are being sold on more than the G-league can give them. Exposure to NBA scouts (more than college), shoe/apparel deal possibilities (no guarantees, just floating the idea to get them excited), commercials, and of course, a big payday and an agent working 24-7 to get them better deals.
Eventually, if this thing we're hearing about is true, nearly all schools will be impacted because the top 40 high school players will be plucked through. It's one thing to do the swiping when the kid hasn't committed, but it's weak ass sauce for G-league money men to keep trying to lure kids away after they've already committed, leaving coaches, schools and fans with last-minute huge holes in their rosters that they are unable to fill before the season starts.

Problem is, those 3-4 year guys are gone after 2 years at UK.
I'm not trying to poke the bear on that, it's a fact. You can average 4ppg and 2rpg at UK in year 2, but that doesn't matter.
How do you stop it? If the GL is going to pay these kids to play, why would the kids want to stay in school?
They stay in school at UVA, Nova, MSU etc… , but, for whatever reason, they don't stay here.
The G League can't offer a 500K contract plus shoe endorsements. Their max contract is 125K for the 5 month season. In that 5 month season you will be playing against grown men who are fighting for their life to land and NBA deal. They are bigger and stronger than an 18yr old kid. Most of these 18yr old kids will get exposed. RJ Hampton was exposed in the NBL in Australia and the G League is better than the NBL.
They will save money on scouting and travel and get 1 year of the predraft workouts basically getting to see what the player is like in a team environment and off the court. Many of these top 5 picks end up being 100 million dollar investments for teams and 1 year at 1 Million dollars is honestly a great deal to see young talent.

I just don't see how Cal would have known. I get the feeling he backed off of Todd for one of many other reasons. Todd (or his handlers) could have been a problem (drama, head case, playing time promise etc… ). Cal is usually one of the first to know about things like this, but it's just now happening and Clarke signed many months ago.
IDK, if a family is having a tough time making ends meet or lives in poverty, that $115k salary would be a Godsend. That's a buttload of money for people that can't put food on the table and right now, the number of people that can't put food on the table is rapidly growing.
Yeah, but we have guys leaving UK early for $60k GL salaries with the same goal in mind, which is to make it to the NBA.
Might as well make $125K in the GL instead of making $0 in college.
I hate it, but as I've been told on here, they don't owe me anything and my entertainment doesn’t matter to them. That's a very true statement. I just wanted this to be a college program, but the NBA and now the GL, is going to make it a lot more difficult to stay on this one and done path.
Who in the g-league is paying “manager fees”, agent fees are capped at 4%. It’s probably closer to $75K, and if you’re a top player you could possibly sign endorsement deals too, I believe Bazley did last year. You can’t do that in college.
Also you get 50 games a year against good competition in the G-league regular season. A player may get only a dozen or so games at that level in college.
If you think there is a good chance you're going to have a high draft pick. No better way to scout a player than have him in your development system for half a year.

In front of what..50 fans? And 0 tv exposure. Yeah its a good chunk of chunk of money but at the end of the day the experience of playing in front of crazy fans and the experience of the ncaa tourbament and maybe a final 4 in front of 60k plus is irreplaceable and will be with you for a lifetime. AND you can say you played under Cal..I mean seriously who wouldn't want that. Unless your family is in dire straights. Which I have no idea on Clarke's family Financials
not exactly shaping up to be world beaters as is. TC was considered Cal’s return to signing top five talent.

There obviously positives to going to college, I’m just pointing out the reasoning for the G-league as well. Also most people here are huge college b-ball fans. That’s not the same for everyone else.
Or get some boosters to match the G-league offer.
It's either that (at least until the likeness issue is changed by state legislatures), or we can kiss our chances at sustaining high-level success here goodbye.
The game has already evolved to a point where going by the book won't allow UK to compete for titles consistently.

The NBA sure isn’t making much money right now and I’d say a lot of damage has been done there just as it has everywhere else. My guess is that shoe sales and athletic gear is taking a hit following in a line like a kindergartner with everybody else. At some point people controlling the money are gonna have to step back a bit.
We have to be careful, though, and not depend on the complete and utter suckage of the rest of college basketball in order to alleviate our fears of a ho-hum season.
Make no mistake, if we don't have Clarke on the roster next year - and regardless of the level of competition - we're not going to be good next year.

Well this went from being the end of the world to basically a non story quickly if you pay attention to what those in the know are saying . Not many , if any top 30 recruit is going to do this as they would be losing money in the long run . This story was a great example of why it is better to stick to the HOB thread about it compared to the RR thread . You would think Clarke signed with the g league instead of everyone reporting the chances he does are slim to none .

Im not depending on teams sucking...I’m just thinking about how the normal top tier of ball will be looking like last year. LOTS of players are leaving and lots of talent spread out. A couple mid majors are predicted to be really good again.
Posters keep saying we ain’t doing shit...first we have no idea what the roster will look like plus no one is looking dominant next year...we had the best chance but IQ and Nick are gone so that’s out the window.

I won't sweat it if the g-league does start siphoning off the top 40 every year. I don't care, just so long as all colleges are pulling from the same pool of players; it doesn't bother me if it's not the elite of the elite. If that was what I was interested in watching, I'd be an NBA fan instead of college. In my mind, stripping college ball of those top 40 each year could lead to better basketball, since teams would actually have to run stuff to get people open looks. Teams won't be able to just give the ball to their stud and run iso. Then the kids who go to college do so with full intentions of staying around and earning their degree, since they have no guarantee of being able to make a living off basketball. The more I think about it, the more comfortable I am with the idea of g-league becoming a true minor-league to the nba and college getting back to being kids playing for the name across the front of the jersey.
