State of 2023 Recruiting

Over the next several days, at least three UK recruiting targets will probably announce commitments.

Naquil Betrand- 6'7" 310# OT from Philadelphia whose stock is rising. Scott Woodward and Zach Yenser are recruiting him for the good guys. He holds at least 4 SEC offers. This is probably boiling down to TX A&M, UK, Syracure, and possibly Auburn. Right now, conventional wisdom is that he will pick TX A&M, where he visited unofficially on July 30. If he doesn't pick TX A&M, then UK has a good chance.

Kenton Kirkland- 6'1" 185# DB from Jacksonville. Chris Collins is recruiting him for UK. He holds at least 6 SEC offers, including FL and GA. Until recently, conventional wisdom held that he was FL St bound. Now he is widely expected to verbal to UK. Even some of the FL St insiders are projecting him to UK. Besides football, Kirkland is also a hs track star. His uncle Ephesians Bartley was an all SEC player at FL and played in the NFL for the Philadelphia Eagles.

Jaremiah Anglin- 6'1" 185# DB from Lake Wales, FL, where he is a two-sport star at Lake Wales hs. Mike Stoops and Chris Collins are recruiting him for UK. He holds at least 5 SEC offers including FL and AL. Like Kirkland, Anglin was once believed to be FL St bound. But some FL St insiders are now projecting him to UK. Anglin is a cousin of Derwin James, a former NFL 1st round draft choice.
Cousin of Derwin James.

Hope he plays like him cause he’s an absolute terror for the Chargers. Maybe the best S in football.

It's fixing to be a big day.

Hopefully we'll land both Betrand and Anglin, but if its just Anglin, I'll be fine with that. I woke up at 2am and couldn't sleep any longer so I've been watching a lot of Anglin's tape. He's not his cousin Derwin James, but he has good ball skills and has great instincts.

Nice hands, excellent closing speed.

Same, don’t think we get betrand today but would love to be surprised, think the longer the Gadson recruitment goes the better it would be for us
The same guys predicting Kirkland to UK are predicting Gadson to FSU. Wiltfong put a CB for FSU in the last couple days. They turned these last two around when they looked like FSU leans though

I love these recruiting threads. I think we get Kirkland.

Has it occurred to our observers that Stoops and Marrow are intentionally targeting players interested in Florida State? Stoops is from there. Norvell is floundering. The harder for Norvell to close the deal with recruits, the more other coaches will come after them. This used to be a problem at Kentucky, so l recognize the pattern. Is this why Kentucky is back recruiting in Florida this year?

^^^ Yes! I think you’ll see same pattern for battles for Auburn recruits. I’m guessing they’ll stay after some Aub recruits regardless of verbal commitment.

Coaches know when there’s blood in the water. On the other side, coaches on the hot seat have a hard time bringing in top level recruiting classes. Hot-seat coaches must develop current players … and do it quickly!

You are onto something there. Kentucky has been snatching Auburn targets for a while. Ja'Kobi Albert and Trevin Wallace. Maybe we are doing the same now to Florida State. In the 2022 class, we did not sign any players from Florida. About to change?

You could be correct about FSUs situation but doesn't Mike Stoops have Florida ties too?

Betrand to Texas A&M as expected. Need a quality tackle badly. Stoops talked Wed about how thin we are right now at O line. Gotta be addressed via HS recruiting.

Unlike other positions, O linemen go into the portal least frequently in all CFB, esp quality tackles.

As expected, Jaremiah Anglin has now committed to UK. Anglin is a 6'1' 185# DB from Lake Wales, FL. Anglin is being recruited by Chris Collins and Mike Stoops. He holds at least 5 SEC offers plus other offers from OK, PA St, and Cincinnati. Anglin's cousin is as all-pro safety Derwin James. Getting Anglin to leave the state of FL is a major recruiting coup for UK.

UK's current 2023 recruiting class-

Nasir Addison, ATH, Irvington, NJ
Jaremiah Anglin, DB, Lake Wales, FL
Anthony Brown, slotR, Springfield, OH
Ty Bryant, DB, Lexington, KY
Jakob Dixon, WR, Louisville, KY
Grant Godfrey, LB, Suwanee, GA
Koby Keenum, OL, Florence, AL
Khalifa Keith, RB/LB, Birmingham, AL
Tanner Lemaster, RE, Washington CH, OH
Kaden Moorman, RB, Frankfort, KY
Shamar Porter, WR, Nashville, TN
Austin Ramsey, OL, Philadelphia, PA
Avery Stuart, DB, Montgomery, AL
Malachi Wood, OL, Richmond, KY
Tommy Ziesmer, LB, Danville, KY

At this point, fans who have been dissing this recruiting class should give it up. This will be another strong class for our coaching staff. Mike Stoops is just now beginning to have a recruiting impact, and UK's staff has broken back into the state of FL. Recent comments from Coach Marrow strongly suggest more high level commitments are already in the pipeline. Trust our coaches. They have earned it.

Badly? IDK about badly. Stoops' comment about being thin at OT was made in the specific context of Josh Jones not being available due to injury. Jones should be back in 2023. Kiyaunta Goodwin, Nik Hall, and Malachi Wood are solid OT prospects. Deondre Buford and Jeremy Flax were solid in spring practice and drew strong reviews from Coach Stoops. Unless Stoops was blowing smoke, which is not his style, both Buford and Flax could be multiyear starters. I am all in favor of signing one more OT prospect in this class, and won't be surprised at all if that happens. You can never have enough of them. But I'm not sure it is a "must" kind of need for this class at this point. I would say it is more like they would take another OT if they can get exactly who they want in the fall. We already have a good group there.

There is a narrative on this board that Flax is not very good. I don't believe that. Flax just had his 2nd consecutive strong spring. He hasn't had many opportunities to play, but he was a 4 star recruit and juco AA out of Independence CC in 2020 after being the #4 hs prospect in the state of MI in 2019. Among our OTs, only Goodwin has a higher ceiling.

I agree 100% about Flax. I’m looking for a big season from him this year. Love the guys talent and really wanted to see more of him last season. Sometimes a man just has to wait his turn and it’s now for Jeremy. Was thrilled when he chose the Cats and I still am. Can’t wait to watch him prove it on the field this season. Go Cats.

If our next commitment is Kenton Kirkland.

Chris Collins would have got us the last 3 commits and they're huge recruits too. He's approaching Clinkscale as our best recruiting DB coach in school history.

Godfrey picked us over Tennessee
Anglin picked us over FSU
Kirkland, who choses on the 15th, would pick us over FSU

So we are shooting for 25 in this class? Or leaving room for a few portal guys...
Transfers count towards 85 man limit so can add 25 in the class and anticipate normal attrition after fall semester and again after spring semester if not also 1 or 2 next summer again.

Don't forget, schools can now bring in up to 7 additional transfers (above 25 signing limit) based on number of outgoing transfers. (1 incoming transfer for every 1 outgoing transfer.)

So, I'm guessing we sign 22-23 players and leave room for 2-3 initial transfers. Then, Stoops will match outgoing transfers with new transfers.

BTW - I have no clue where we stand on 85 max players. I got lost in the Covid waiver for super seniors.

85 Only matters on first day of winter semester and first day of fall semester. Almost everyone is over 85 between Feb signing day and in UGA's case Aug 1st I believe.

Maybe just me, but I assumed he was going to UL when his visit pics were posted with his mom. We'll see, but I've never thought he would be here, even though I think he would thrive here more than anywhere. Looks to me as if Mom is enamored with UL, BUT it's just a picture.

It's recruiting. They beat UK for DL yesterday. These guys prob have no clue what cal said. Outside of lex most sports fans don't care what cal said

It’s been the talk of sports radio today in Nashville by Tn talking heads. They’re all saying “Cal just hurt Stoops because this statement is what Stoops has to fight against regularly in recruiting battles.”

Then, I glance through sports articles today and there are multiple writers writing about Cal’s comments and how it hurts reputation of UK football.

I wish it was a local story, and a brief one at that. But ... it’s national and I would bet you any amount of money you’ll hear it mentioned on television during every UK game this year. To think Cal’s comments won’t hurt Stoops is sticking one’s head in the sand.

I can guarantee I won’t hear about it on a televised basketball game!

Ha! I understand.

I’m a fan of both sports, but I didn’t like Cal’s comment about football! It was just dumb and reinforces the false narrative that UK doesn’t care about football.

Unfortunately, we’ll hear the comment made during every football game! These will be the same games being watched by recruits.

Knoxville will sign a top 10 class, UL a top 15. UK will have to fight & claw to not be among the worst rated P5 classes.

Just a lot of bad timing. Few blue chip prospects in KY & OH. Coaching assistant turnover. NIL being used effectively by competitors. Hopefully a hot 2022 start by the team on the field this fall can get us back in with some top 250 kids before signing day.

I think we end up around 25, which is a normal Stoops class. The key will be a few important transfers. Stoops and Marrow have excelled in this area.

These transfers are not figured in the recruiting rankings. But, bringing in 2-3 transfers that start next year is like bumping up your incoming class by 10 spots. We have a good roster, so for a transfer to come in and play means that player is really good regardless of what their hs ranking was. (Levis is a good example.)

If we get in Dec a high quality QB from the portal it def makes up for a lot. Might be most important recruiting need. an SEC level starter qb, a former 4 or 5* recruit, who has some P5 playing time like Levis had.

True.

If you look at the impacts by Wandale Robinson, Dare Rosenthal, Jaquez Jones, Levis and even BMF, we have filled needs with big time transfers.

Given the consistent quality, this ain’t just average dumb luck.
