Sources Say Live Now (Jaxson decision countdown)

KU is stacked with scorers. So no. BYU, yeah.
If you want to talk about who is on the team then we just disagree because I think we have enough and just be nice to add more.

and Kansas has Adidas literally NIL’ing for them when Nike won’t do it. Maybe we should change shoe companies to someone that will?

Nike loves Duke for whatever reason. We get the shaft. Adidas basically only has Kansas. I mean yeah they have Louisville too. But lol.

After reading this whole thread it's pretty obvious all the folks who didn't want Pope hired are congregate here to snipe and bitch because they aren't satisfied with hire. They are doing just as I predicted 2 months ago, dig in and not even giving the new a chance to even coach 1 team. I don't know if this was a good hire or not, but I will not spew shit at the man before he has even coached a game. Some of you people have the frustration tolerance of a Knat.
You are 100% correct. The team we have is better than Pope had last year at BYU. Pope is a vastly superior game coach than Cal. Pope runs an offense that is fun to watch. Pope is not an arrogant jerk. This is going to be a very fun year, for the first time in many years.

for this year I have only 2 expectations, play as hard as possible and for Pope not to make any dumb coaching decisions like Cal has... no forgetting players on the bench, leaving many time outs in your pocket in close games, not doing game plans etc.

Look at KU, UConn, and Bama getting stars back, Pope never had that chance when Sheppard was announced a top 5 pick... We just have to show promise for the future this season and give Pope a foundation to build from for the future.

now if you want to bash Mitch Barnhart , 100% do so, he's a clown and I want him gone now. There is an argument to be had we need to go all in on basketball to stay up with the basketball schools willing to do so and I love football but if you have to, we are a basketball school , you have to. C'mon Craft's dont fail us now, let us have the NIL to finish the class off with a Riley or another reclass and outbid others.
(not saying to ignore football, just do what has to be done with basketball then give to football and try for a decent team, we'll never be great in football with our limitations)

He definitely has much to prove on the big time recruiting trail.

Barney hiring a guy that's only qualification for the UK job being he played here is still baffling to me. I think pope will do well here but if he played anywhere else would he have gotten the offer so early on? I think we all know the answer.
100% our fans need to take a step back and realize we’re paying top 5 money for a coach who has never won a tournament game (lost to 11 seed Dusquene last year) and our fans would have no idea who he was if he didn’t play here.

Recruits also have no idea who Mark Pope is. BYU actually got worse when Pope was there.

I don't see how anyone could be 100% satisfied with the hire . I like Pope's messaging, fans and school first. Love it. Love his passion for UK. But if passion and taglines won NCAA titles we'd have 200 of them. We're banking on this guy being our Hurley. He has 0 NCAAT wins, he coached at a midmajor and then a religious school. Unknown in recruiting circles. We very much have a guy who is learning on the job still. And when you look at the optics around his hire. With the swim team scandal coming out right after Pope was hired. Implicating Mitch Banrhart. It just screams a safe and panic hire for UK.

We had better hope he works out because I don't feel good about going back to a coaching search. With even further damage heaped onto the program. Cal already did a number on us. Our optics are down. People laugh at UK and aren't afraid of us anymore. The popular narrative even if it's wrong. Is we got turned down by everybody and had to scramble and hire a former player.

I'm not gonna stop being objective because he played here 30 years ago. The early misses are concerning. Even with his allstar staff.
Even Hurley needed like 4 years, many of which weren’t good seasons to get UCONN rolling. Yes it’s easier now but we need to give Pope time. He’s done pretty damn good so far with the staff and for having 0 players in 2 months time.

At BYU noone cared and they were able to surprise people. At UK, it's everyone's Superbowl. Not even remotely the same.

The only hope on that end is with all the portal stuff, maybe the Superbowl aspect goes away. But I think that's more of a fanbase thing so I doubt it.

Bottom line: we really needed him or someone like him but missed.

People expect UK to hire a new coach with 0 players, and rely exclusively on the transfer portal to build a roster that can compete for a title, while battling the top programs in the country loaded with NIL money to do so. Yeah, I'd say that's unrealistic for year 1.

I said it once, and I'll say it all season - UK gets in the tournament in year 1 and I'm good. The roster is good enough for that. But there is no explosive go-to scorer and that's not really debatable.

I don't care what Pope said at the presser - of COURSE he's going to say the goal is to win a title. No coach is going to get up there and say, "Well, we just need to do the best we can do next year. I hope we make the tournament."

Snarky, some recruits have possibly heard of Kentucky, would you agree?

That is not true at all.
Actually it is…..look at the stats. In 2022-2023 Pope went 19-15 (.559 winning percentage), that was the worst season BYU had since 2004-2005. Sorry, I’m just not sold on him being this amazing in game coach. If 2 years ago he had a terrible record in the WCC and missed the tournament all together.

We are literally eight deep with talented and experienced veterans. We have three freshmen with very high ceilings. The eight veterans fills all five positions with quality and depth. From what I have seen Chandler's offensive skills are at least on par with Robinson's. Just lacking the experience. Our three to four high level defenders along with the uptick offence with all these veterans will make us a strong competitive team IMO. I just think we are fine with the offensive support our young guys can give when needed.

We had unlimited playing time to offer, tons of NIL, and the Kentucky brand, with an elite assistant coaching staff.

If we miss on Robinson, we failed to land one top 20 portal transfer.

That's disappointing. I don't have a very high expectation for next year, with or without Robinson, but you have to admit that there's not much buzz with this collection of players. Hopefully they come together like that 2004 team did.

I see next season as a stop gap season. It is what it is.
you keep saying tons of NIL $............how do you know what it began with or how much is left?
agree with most everything else

I just love it when the brainiacs on here project a team nobody has ever seen play is an NCAA team or an NIT team. You have absolutely no way of even guessing how this team will preform, none, zero. I will be SO glad when the brain fog of Cal NBA sudstation for STARS, wears off on our fan base.
I agree, that's why I'm taking the 50/50 approach. I have predicted nothing.

Sorry it’s not:

In the last 30 years, Pope had two of BYUs top 3 highest seeded teams. 2 of the top 7 in BYU history.

He also had them ranked in the top 25 in 4 of his 5 years there, which hadn’t happened in the 9 previous years under Rose.

I’m not saying his resume is UK good, but BYU was significantly better than during the last 4-5 years under Rose.

It’s not UK good and certainly not $5.5 million good! 2 years ago he had a .559 winning percentage in the WCC and missed the tournament, last year he won 1 game in the big 12 tournament and lost to 11 seed Duquesne in the first round of the NCAA tournament. Yet, posters on here keep praising his coaching prowess.

I’ll gladly eat crow if I’m wrong, but I see the next few years being mediocre.

Pope did a very good job at BYU considering he had to recruit choir boys.

He's the fifth highest paid coach. No excuses.
Its all about the money. That's all these players and their handlers are after. If UK wants these players they have to offer more money. Who's in charge of the money and the offers??? College loyalty is dead.

I understand the frustration and concern about likely losing out on Robinson. I was really hoping we’d get him too.
While NIL is going to dictate a lot, I still fully believe that it’s going to take a year or two for CMP to get to the program up and running to higher standards again. No one but UK fans really even know who Mark is yet, and they’ll want to see what kind of program he runs.
that being said…
I keep seeing the phrase “not up to Kentucky standards”
People we haven’t been up to Kentucky standards in years….we had all the talent we needed, including transfers and a few returnees, and did next to nothing.
Maybe we won’t have the top ranked talent next year but we will for damn sure have a better TEAM. We will lose games, but it won’t be for lack of effort, energy, or coaching

I'm not disagreeing with you on that. I was just providing context to the BYU teams Dave Rose had in his last 4-5 years vs what Pope did there. I do think Pope has done an excellent job thus far though, given what he had to work with.

Pay attention. I'm not talking about the act of missing Mahaney. I was just pointing out how absurd saying stuff like that is. You can chalk up every miss to ''well, what was he supposed to do if ____ wanted to ___''. Recruit.
I have been paying attention we have all been paying attention. Essentially you’re complaining just to complain and worrying about something that hasn’t even happened yet. Counting contact as missed is absurd, which is what a lot of you have done. In Mahaneys case Kentucky got brea but if it was reserved you all would be complaining they didn’t get brea. The same thing will happen if Robinson comes here. You all will find something to be upset about and nitpick it. And I will play the reverse of that, you can’t chalk up player Kentucky contacts as misses, or the ones Kentucky decides to no longe pursue as misses. You also can’t say a team is going to be bad before they even have a damn practice together.

All of the guys I am talking about visited. Or were heavily pursued via zoom. Cope.

Shocker fans actually back their new coach instead of hate on him before he coaches a damn game. Having pre conceived notions of what he will be before he even coaches is ridiculous.

So Mahaney is a miss even though they got a player just as good if not better than him. Ososbor is a miss even though Kentucky decided to not meet his ridiculous price tag? Lanier is a huge miss even though he was Tennessees the whole time? I saw somebody on here a while back say fricking Jonas aidoo was a miss, like be serious. They said Jeremey roach was a miss when Kentucky didn’t have a chance to set up a visit or do anything. Or smith is a miss because of admissions not admitting him. Lol cope, okay man I will, you do the same. Whoever Kentucky adds last, you will have some kind of problem with it, so nothing will change.
